Leeds hit the jackpot selling Bielsa star who’s now worth less than Cooper

Leeds United will hope Patrick Bamford can start firing in goals again soon to help in their ongoing quest to win promotion back to the Premier League, with the 30-year-old striker enduring a barren patch in front of goal lately.

The 6 foot 1 forward has failed to score in his side's last six Championship clashes, after recapturing his Whites best at points this campaign with seven second-tier strikes tallied up.

Even with Bamford firing blanks as of late, Leeds wouldn't turn back time to have this former attacker back on their books who has seen his transfer value fall at an alarming pace since leaving Elland Road behind.

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.

Kemar Roofe's time at Leeds

Kemar Roofe was a particular favourite under Marcelo Bielsa during the iconic Argentine manager's time in charge of the West Yorkshire titans, amassing 122 appearances in total for the Whites predominantly under Bielsa's watchful eye.

Roofe would also come into his own under the eclectic manager's celebrated spell, scoring 15 goals during his final season in a Whites shirt and accumulating 33 strikes in total from 122 games.

Leeds would decide to cash in on the now 31-year-old forward after this final impactful campaign in front of goal, managing to sell Roofe on for £7m to Anderlecht in 2019 which has proven to be a fantastic call in hindsight

Struggling to find the back of the net this season playing for Rangers, after managing just one campaign out in Belgium before moving to Ibrox, the Jamaica international's transfer value now has fallen to lower than that of Liam Cooper.

That's the case even as the Scotsman looks to be nearing towards the end of his time at Elland Road as a fringe figure, showcasing how much Roofe's value has dropped off.

Former Leeds striker Kemar Roofe.

Kemar Roofe's transfer value in 2024

Roofe has had a difficult campaign after becoming a reliable source of goals for Rangers previously, only managing one goal for the Scottish giants from 11 games in the league.

He hasn't been helped by recurring injury problems however, having been absent from the last few months of action by regularly being in the Ibrox treatment room.

That has resulted in Roofe's estimated worth falling all the way down to a pitiful €0.4m (£342k), a far cry away from the millions Leeds managed to get for the 31-year-old when Belgium came calling.

1. Karl Darlow

€0.3m (£256k)

2. Sam Byram

€0.4m (£342k)

3. Sonny Perkins

€0.6m (£512k)

4. Liam Cooper

€0.7m (£598k)

5. Jamie Shackleton

€0.8m (£683k)

In Daniel Farke's camp currently, Roofe would tie with Sam Byram as being Leeds' second lowest valued asset with Cooper being worth just a little bit more at €0.7m (£598k).

That is despite Cooper failing to provide adequate backup in the centre-back positions recently to Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon, run ragged by the Watford attackers when the Whites had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road to end March.

Leeds defender Liam Cooper.

It feels as though Cooper will be the next major announcement from a Whites perspective confirmed to be leaving the club at the close of this season, following on from Stuart Dallas' emotional retirement news.

Roofe still comes in as being worth less than Cooper despite all of this however, with the former Leeds man in desperate need of breathing life back into this Rangers career when he is given a consistent run of games injury-free.

Glasgow Rangers striker Kemar Roofe.

As has been seen in his Rangers career previously before a slog of injury setbacks – with 38 goals managed from 98 games – he should be able to turn around his stuttering time in Scotland or face having to find another new club soon.

Leeds already have their next Dallas in "unbelievable" star who Farke loves

Leeds United will hope this blossoming young star becomes their next Stuart Dallas over time.

Rangers ditch Lawrence in predicted line-up vs St Johnstone

Glasgow Rangers return to Premiership action tomorrow as Philippe Clement takes his team to Perth for a clash against St Johnstone.

The match comes just four days after the 3-1 win at Ibrox against Ross County and while three points was all that mattered, the statistics show that the Light Blues could have entered double figures with regard to goals.

Not only did they take 43 shots during the game, but the club also had 20 corners and finished the game with 72% possession in what was a dominant performance by the home side.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

The Belgian will likely make a couple of changes for the game tomorrow, especially as Rabbi Matondo has been ruled out due to injury.

With this in mind, we at Football FanCast predict the starting XI which will take to the pitch at McDiarmid Park tomorrow lunchtime.

1

GK – Jack Butland

Jack Butland

While Rangers conceded against County in midweek, Butland did not have much to do at all as the Highland side managed only one shot on target during the whole game.

The ‘keeper has been a revelation for the Gers this season and shows how vital it is to have a reliable option between the posts. Across 40 matches in all competitions this term, Butland has kept 20 clean sheets and conceded 30 goals.

2

RB – James Tavernier

The captain was phenomenal against County in midweek, doing everything but get on the scoresheet.

He provided the assists for all three goals, while making eight key passes and creating three big chances, topping his performance off by receiving a perfect rating of 10/10 via Sofascore.

Having already lifted the League Cup earlier this season, Tavernier will be desperate to add to his collection and, given their recent form, a domestic treble is within the realm of possibilities.

3

CB – Connor Goldson

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

Goldson was held off by Eamonn Brophy before Simon Murray scored the equaliser and the defender has been at fault for a few goals this season.

Against Aberdeen in November, the centre-back was caught out by a long ball over the top which led to the Dons opening the scoring and this is something he will need to be wary of.

He has missed only four matches during the season and will have a key part to play over the next couple of months.

4

CB – John Souttar

John Souttar

The Scot has been Goldson’s regular partner recently and the duo work well together. Leon Balogun was taken off against Livingston a few weeks ago after suffering a facial injury, but it will be the former Hearts' defender who is unleashed from the start.

Souttar scored the vital third goal in midweek while also winning 100% of his aerial duels and if he is in that sort of form tomorrow, the Saints will struggle to get anything going.

5

LB – Ridvan Yilmaz

Ridvan Yilmaz

The Turkish left-back has started seven of the previous eight league matches and has firmly established himself as Clement’s number one choice on the left side of the defence.

With Borna Barisic out of contract at the end of the season, Yilmaz has the chance to cement his place in the starting XI, and it looks as though he has totally transformed the trajectory of his spell in Glasgow.

6

CM – John Lundstram

John Lundstram for Rangers.

Like Butland and Tavernier, the English midfielder is becoming one of the first names on the team sheet due to his excellent performances of late.

Against County, Lundstram took 100 touches, completed 92% of his passes and made four key passes in a display that proved just how crucial he is to Clement.

7

CM – Mohamed Diomande

Mohammed Diomande

Rangers signed the 22-year-old on a loan deal with an obligation to buy for £4.3m during the January transfer window, and he looks like a shrewd piece of business.

Tom Lawrence excelled against County, but he will drop to the bench as a precaution due to his recent injury history and this will allow the Ivorian to secure his first league start for the Gers.

He replaced Lawrence in midweek and showed his abilities by finishing the match with a 100% pass success rate while making one key pass.

8

RW – Ross McCausland

The young winger will be unleashed from the starting XI once again, and he will be looking to make more of a direct impact against St Johnstone.

He did make six key passes during the clash against County, yet he failed to deliver a successful cross into the box while losing possession eight times, but he is still raw and developing.

9

AM – Todd Cantwell

Todd Cantwell

The Englishman delivered one of his finest performances of the season in midweek. Cantwell did everything but score or assist against the Staggies and if he can maintain this level of performance over the next few weeks, Rangers will be favourites for the title.

After a tough start to the campaign, the former Norwich City gem looks settled under Clement and the fans will be hoping he can continue his fine form against the Saints.

10

LW – Oscar Cortes

Lens forward Oscar Cortes.

With the news that Matondo will miss the game, January signing Oscar Cortes will come back into the starting XI.

During his 45-minute cameo in midweek, the Colombian managed four key passes, missed two big chances and took five shots in total, and he really should have scored at least once.

Boehly has been rinsed by Chelsea’s expensive flop for 81 weeks

Chelsea are having yet another below-par season and find themselves currently residing in mid-table in the Premier League.

The London-based club are a massive 14 points away from the top four despite spending over £1b over the last two seasons on transfer and loan fees alone.

This figure is astonishingly high and puts into perspective how badly they've played since the arrival of Todd Boehly at Stamford Bridge.

Out of the many additions made by Boehly in order to try to make his club one of Europe's powerhouses once again, the vast majority have failed to make an impact on the club since their arrival.

There is, however, one signing in particular which stands out above the rest for being woeful despite earning a bumper wage.

Marc Cucurella's form since joining Chelsea

Marc Cucurella joined Chelsea in August 2022 from Brighton and Hove Albion for a fee which was worth around £63m.

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.

The move came off the back of his first in England's top flight, where he performed above and beyond what was expected of him.

For his one and only season as a Brighton player, the Spain international managed a total of 38 appearances and contributed to two goals.

Although the stats may not showcase how solid he was across the season, he showed enough to get Chelsea to spend enough to make him the second-most expensive left-back in world football.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, the one-time Barcelona full-back has appeared on 45 occasions but, he has only garnered a total of two assists during that time.

Ben Chiwell Chelsea

His regular role in Chelsea's starting XI is largely due to the sheer number of injuries and time on the sidelines that Ben Chilwell has been faced with.

The England international has spent a total of 83 games on the sidelines since the arrival of the 25-year-old, which has resulted in the Blues relying on Cucurella more often than not.

To make matters worse, during their Premier League clash against Everton on the 10 December, Cucurella was himself struck down by injury and forced off the pitch early.

Wage Burners

Football FanCast's Wage Burners series explores the salaries of the modern-day game.

His injury was so severe that he had to undergo surgery, which has kept him sidelined for the past couple of months.

As with all players who get injured, their salaries are still paid in full, which leaves clubs in a bit of a pickle. Hence, why now, the Spain international is bleeding the London-based club dry.

Marc Cucrella's total cost at Chelsea

After being at the club for around 81 weeks now, the salary Cucurella has received is eye-watering. Over the time he has spent at the club, the 5 foot 8 defender has gained around £12m in wages alone – raking in a staggering £175k-per-week, as per Capology.

Figures vis Capology

It would appear that such an outlay – which comes to £75m in total when including his initial transfer fee – has not been justified, with talkSPORT pundit Jamie O'Hara even branding him a "disgrace" following Chelsea's Champions League tie against Real Madrid last season.

This judgement came after Chilwell was sent off after pulling on the shoulder of Rodrygo in the box. The only reason the England international decided to commit the foul in the first place was due to the poor positioning of Cucurella for the goal.

This isn't the first time a situation has occurred like this with Cucurella, and it likely won't be the last. So, not only have Chelsea spent a near-record-breaking fee on the left-back, but they have also made themselves £12m lighter for a player who seemingly isn't up to the standard they expect.

So, it is without doubt that the left-back has bled the club dry and looks set to be yet another Boehly signing who won't make the cut in the near future.

Don't let World Cup fool you, Yorkshire v Essex is where it's at, baby

Adam Lyth, Tom Kohler-Cadmore fall just shy of centuries on even day in Leeds

David Hopps03-Jun-2019

Adam Lyth scores through the leg side•Getty Images

This is where it’s at, baby: Yorkshire and Essex duking it for supremacy. Not quite how Sir Neville Cardus would have put it, admittedly, but when the World Cup is in full flow, and England are involved in a troubled run chase, the Championship needs to go full-on Iggy Pop, the grandfather of punk, to grab even a tiny share of attention. While the World Cup understandably dominates attention over the next month or so, the Championship will take shape. Surely Somerset will never have a better chance of winning county cricket’s premier tournament for the first time than this year. As for Yorkshire and Essex, they are still not sure what their seasons will deliver. The next three days will reveal much. The winner, if there is to be one, may be pleasantly surprised by their lofty position come Thursday evening. An even first day has left us none the wiser about which side might prosper. Yorkshire were dominant just after tea at 224 for 2 with the prospect of hundreds for both Adam Lyth and Tom Kohler-Cadmore, but Simon Harmer’s tightly-engineered off-spin held Essex together, as it must, and neither hundred materialised as Yorkshire lost four wickets for 28 in 13 overs and they came to rest at 289 for 6.David Willey, omitted from England’s World Cup squad, was one of those wickets, leg before as he propped forward at Harmer. It’s fair to say that as he walked off you would not have been tempted to bottle the air around him and sell it as a Happiness Potion.Headingley’s World Cup matches are still to come, of course, and they will be enhanced by the magnificent new Emerald Stand, which will remain empty for this match while a few final touches are carried out but which gleams virginal white between the cricket and rugby sections of the ground. The decrepit old stand where the sun never dared intrude has been replaced by something more uplifting. People may even be caught smiling. It is a grand development – £43m worth, of which Yorkshire’s share was £18m – and brings a sense of beauty to a ground that once upon a time only admired beauty in a Geoffrey Boycott defensive push, Fred Trueman’s outswinger or Brian Close’s bruised forehead and where most of the cognoscenti would have probably dismissed Keats’ Grecian Urn as something you couldn’t rightly sup out of.But their Lust for Life, as Iggy once put it, centres proudly around the County Championship and there was much to sharpen their interest: a debutant batsman, and from Huddersfield, too; signs in Kohler-Cadmore’s 83 that has game is maturing nicely; a condemnatory statistic about Yorkshire opening stands that just will not go away; and an Essex wicketkeeping crisis, not that they would admit to being too interested in that. The debutant opener was Will Fraine, who moved from Nottinghamshire in the middle of last season, and whose father is a senior figure in an ice cream company that is one of Yorkshire’s major sponsors. His 39 from 69 balls was not quite the indulgence promised by the Idaho Valley Mint flavour, but was a sober affair, prospering largely through learned steers through backward point, head determinedly over ball, enough to satisfy the members on first sight. Sam Cook brought one back to bowl him through the gate.Fraine is the latest player to try to address some very un-Yorkshire shortcomings at the top of the order. According to the Yorkshire specialist Graham Hardcastle, it is 20 matches since they have managed a hundred stand for the first wicket in first-class cricket when Shaun Marsh and Kohler-Cadmore did so against Surrey at The Kia Oval; there again, they were responding to 529.The fact that such a skilful player as Lyth has routinely been one of those openers makes it an even more unlikely statistic. Lyth did his share of playing and missing in making 95, but otherwise had few alarms, his most uncertain moment perhaps coming on 17 when he edged Cook just in front of second slip.Lyth was also involved in the run out of Gary Ballance, who is searching for a century in six successive Yorkshire matches. Len Hutton once made a hundred for Yorkshire in seven successive matches, although that sequence was interrupted by England calls. It was an avoidable run out, a casual first run being followed by joint uncertainty over the second, Sam Cook’s throw from square leg doing the rest.Lyth could barely have succumbed more to self-blame had he walked home in bare feet wearing a placard saying ‘Stone Me’. “It was my fault,” he said. “It’s not great when you run the best batsman in the country out. I can’t honestly tell you how awful it felt. I can’t apologise enough. He said he would forgive me if I got 150 so he hasn’t forgiven me.”England might only have eyes for the World Cup at the moment, but the Ashes will soon be here and in these parts they are adamant that Ballance, defiantly playing as deep in the crease as ever, should be part of them. Lyth’s excessive self-blame proved as much.Lyth’s departure to a defensive push at Jamie Porter soon after tea gave Will Buttleman the first of two simple catches – he also held Kohler-Cadmore’s attempted drive – to adorn his emergency uptake of the keeping gloves after Robbie White injured an ankle in training, so ending his loan spell from Middlesex; he came in on debut against Hampshire last season, too, when Adam Wheater was injured midway through a match.Michael Pepper damaged a finger against Kent last week, soon after returning from an appendix operation and Wheater, the senior man, is a long-term absentee with a badly-broken finger. They said it would be difficult replacing James Foster, but nobody said it would be downright dangerous.

Liam Dawson could replace Joe Denly in World Cup squad – Trevor Bayliss

Denly faces a couple of defining games over the next few days

George Dobell07-May-2019Liam Dawson could yet replace Joe Denly in England’s World Cup squad, according to coach Trevor Bayliss.Dawson missed out on selection when England named a 17-man squad – including their provisional World Cup 15 – for the early international matches of the summer, but has continued to impress in county cricket. He made a List A century against Surrey last week and has conceded just 4.01 runs per over in claiming 17 wickets – only four men have more – in this year’s Royal London Cup.As a result, Bayliss says he could be called up to join the England squad before the end of the five-match Royal London ODI series against Pakistan, which begins at The Oval on Wednesday. Dawson has played just three ODIs.That means Denly faces a couple of defining games over the next few days. With Moeen Ali injured – he has the “slightest of slight” cracks in a rib having been struck while batting at the IPL, according to Bayliss – England have a perfect opportunity to test their bench strength. Denly is not only all but certain to play at The Oval, he will be given an extended bowl with a view to seeing how he fares. He has so far been unable to cement his place in the squad, with the first two balls of his only over on Sunday thumped for sixes. While Bayliss was keen to stress that Denly is not just seen as the reserve spinner – he can also bat and field in a variety of positions – much the same could be said about Dawson. And while previous games have seen Denly limited to supporting opportunities – he bowled only five overs in Dublin and one in Cardiff – it seems likely he will be given an extended opportunity at The Oval with a view to coming to a conclusion about his ability to perform at the top level.Liam Dawson continued his impressive form•Getty Images

“Denly’s is probably the other position that I’m sure we – the selectors – will discuss,” Bayliss said ahead of the opening match of the ODI series against Pakistan. “He is not the only bowler to run in and bowl a couple half-volleys to start a spell. But we’re going to try to give the guys at least two or three games in this series so I wouldn’t necessarily put it all down on one game.”But it is getting to the business end. So the performances of everyone will count.”Someone like Dawson will certainly be in discussions. He’s done well this year and he’s done well for us in the past when he’s been given an opportunity at this level. I’m sure he’ll be discussed as well. I don’t think it would be out of place for me to say the final World Cup 15 will come down to the 17 we have in this squad and Dawson. It’s probably down to that 18.”The other issue the selectors have to decide is whether to include Jofra Archer and, if they do, who he should replace. While it remains possible he could be included in place of Denly or Dawson, it is clear Bayliss believes that would leave a squad “over-stocked” with fast bowlers.”It’s not out of the question,” Bayliss said. “But if we went that way, you might ask the question if we’re over-stocked with fast bowlers. The answer, probably, would be yes.”So that final fast bowling position is the big decision we have to make. If a fast bowler misses out – whoever it is – they are going to be bitterly disappointed. And it will be a difficult decision to make.”Jofra looked fairly nervous in Ireland and I think that showed in his bowling. But he is very skilful, he has a bit of extra pace and he’s fitted into the team in a short space of time very well. He can be a good player for England in the future, that’s for sure. He’s certainly in the mix.”
