Spurs could land a big Johnson upgrade in swoop for £21m magician

The January transfer window is now officially open for business and Tottenham Hotspur appear to be busy and ready to improve their squad before the end of the month.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano recently confirmed that Spurs have a deal in place with RB Leipzig to sign forward Timo Werner on loan until the end of the season.

The Germany international is due to arrive on a temporary basis and the club will have an option to make the move permanent in the summer, although that is not a mandatory clause and he could return to his home country next term.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner celebrates scoring a goal.

Romano has since revealed that the attacker's medical has been booked in and Werner is expected to start training with his new teammates this coming week.

The reporter has also stated that the club are in talks over the structure of a deal to sign Romania international Radu Dragusin from Genoa to bolster their options at the heart of their defence.

Spurs transfer news – Matias Soule

Speaking to TVPlay in December, Italian journalist Fabio Santini named Spurs as a possible destination for Juventus youngster Matias Soule in January.

The reporter claimed that the Old Lady would like to cash in on the talented young winger during the winter window and would demand a fee of up to €25m (£21m).

He added that Spurs and fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace are the two clubs that the Italian giants could sell him to this month.

However, Soule is currently on loan to Frosinone until the end of the 2023/24 campaign and it remains to be seen whether or not Juventus will recall him in January in order to sell him now.

The alternative would be that Tottenham, or Palace, are able to secure an agreement for his services this month but they would not bring him in until the summer after his loan with the Serie A side comes to an end.

Ideally, he would be brought in now but Ange Postecoglou could look at it as a project signing and one that they could afford to wait with.

Soule has enjoyed an impressive season on loan with Frosinone and his statistics suggest that he has the quality to arrive as a big upgrade on current Spurs forward Brennan Johnson, which is one argument why it could benefit them to bring him in now.

Tottenham signed the Wales international from Nottingham Forest in the summer transfer window for a fee that The BBC reported could be worth in excess of £45m.

However, the 22-year-old forward has not had the easiest start to life in North London and has a way to go before being able to justify such a significant fee.

Brennan Johnson's season in numbers

The young attacker has not provided consistent quality from the wing despite being provided with plenty of opportunities to impress by Postecoglou.

Johnson has started 14 of his 17 Premier League appearances so far this season for Spurs but has only produced one goal and four assists.

He has significantly underperformed in front of goal with one strike from an xG (Expected Goals) of 3.39. Heung-min Son, meanwhile, has plundered 12 league goals from 7.12 xG, which shows how much of a difference a lethal finisher can make in the final third.

Johnson ranks within the top 29% of Premier League attacking midfielders and wingers for non-penalty xG (0.29) per 90, but ranks within the bottom 13% for non-penalty goals (0.08) per 90.

This shows that his teammates are providing him with high-quality chances at an impressive rate and he has been unable to make the most of them.

Tottenham's Brennan Johnson.

The Welsh ace does have four assists to his name but they have come from 1.81 xA, which shows that his fellow attackers have been clinical with the opportunities that have fallen their way from his passes and crosses.

In fact, Johnson ranks within the bottom 32% of his positional peers for shot-creating actions (3.19) and the bottom 29% for progressive passes (2.60) per 90 this season.

These statistics show that the former Forest star is a wasteful finisher who does not provide an outstanding level of creativity on the wing, which is why Spurs could benefit from landing an upgrade on him this month.

The statistics that show why Soule would be an upgrade on Johnson

Postecoglou could improve his side by signing Soule, who Juventus seemingly want to cash in on, this month, or in the summer after his loan with Frosinone ends.

The 20-year-old whiz, who is two years younger than Johnson, has been in splendid form this season and his statistics suggest that he could offer far more to Spurs from a wide position.

He has started 17 Serie A matches for Frosinone so far this season and has showcased his clinical nature in front of goal with eight strikes from an xG of 6.43.

This shows that, unlike the current Spurs forward, Soule is ruthless in the final third and is able to make the most of the opportunities that have come his way.

The Argentine youngster, who scout Jacek Kulig claimed can "produce magic", has also displayed his creative talent with five 'big chances' created and 3.02 xA in those 17 league appearances, but has only been rewarded with one assist.

Matias Soule's 2023/24 Serie A statistics.

As you can see in the chart above, Soule ranks within the top 6% of Serie A attacking midfielders and wingers for shot-creating actions (5.34) and the top 4% for progressive passes (6.80) per 90 this season.

This shows that the Juventus loanee has the quality to consistently provide a creative threat in the final third, both in terms of directly creating for his teammates with shot-creating actions and passes to progress his team up the pitch from deep positions.

Therefore, Soule could be a big upgrade on Johnson as his statistics suggest that he would offer far more in front of goal as both a scorer and a creator.

Why Chelsea face repeat of blank shirt debacle in fruitless search for new sponsor – explained

  • Chelsea started campaign with blank shirts
  • Face repeat next season after missing Nike deadline
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Blues are at risk of having to compete without a sponsor on the front of their shirt – as they did for the first two months of the current campaign – as more issues arise for owner Todd Boehly. Chelsea are yet to find a sponsor for next season after only signing a short-term deal with Infinite Athlete in September 2023.

    THE EXPLANATION

According to , the London club have missed the deadline for kit manufacturer Nike to include a new brand on their new shirts. This could mean Chelsea repeat their antics from last year and launch their 2024-25 trip without any sponsor. Boehly was left frustrated with the Premier League's decision to assess the potential partnership with Infinite Athlete and could find himself in an identical situation by the end of the summer.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Chelsea's previous deal with phone company Three was worth £40 million ($50m) a season between 2020 and 2023. It was a big stream of income for the Blues who have splashed out majorly since Boehly arrived to replace Roman Abramovich in 2022.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino has a lot of work to do over the summer and may have to make some brutal decisions if he is to improve Chelsea's squad. The former Tottenham boss will likely have to cut some of the big names involved at Stamford Bridge, especially if he wants to bring in new faces.

Celtic signal January transfer plans; Rodgers convinced he can land targets

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to bolster his squad in January and has now reportedly identified the number of players he would like to bring to Parkhead in January.

Celtic stumble on Scottish Premiership return…

On Saturday, Celtic stumbled to a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on their return from international duty at Parkhead.

Despite a late David Turnbull opener from the penalty spot, the Hoops surrendered their lead in dramatic fashion as Jonathan Obika stooped to direct a corner over the line in a match where it would've been hard to argue that Rodgers' men conclusively done enough to deliver three points.

Speaking in his post-match press conference after the match, Rodgers indicated his frustration at his side's inability to claim victory despite recording over 80% possession on the day, stating via BBC Sport: "A draw at home always feels like a defeat. We're disappointed. We had enough opportunities to win the game, over 80% possession. We didn't create as much as we'd like but the chances we had should have been enough."

The Irishman has also conceded that his side need to improve on their penalty conversion rate in light of Luis Palma's miss from the spot, as he said via The Scotsman: "I was looking before I came in here that there have been a number of penalties missed. These are decisive moments in games and you have to be ready to take them. You are never always going to be three, four, five up in games. You get that opportunity, you have to take it."

Looking ahead, Celtic travel to Rome in midweek to face Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, where nothing but a victory will do in order to keep their slim hopes of European progression alive.

Celtic eyeing three new arrivals in January

According to Football Insider, Celtic are planning to bring in three new arrivals in January as Rodgers looks to add some extra strength in depth to aid his side's Scottish Premiership title push.

The report states that the Hoops are convinced that there is good value to be had in the mid-season window. Positionally, acquiring a goalkeeper is a key priority at Parkhead; however, Celtic are also keen to strengthen outfield positions come the New Year.

Joe Hart for Celtic.

Although the outlet don't mention which specific other positions that may be earmarked for incomings, Celtic could be without striking duo Kyogo Furuhashi and Oh Hyeon-gyu in January due to the Asian Cup taking place, signifying that a striker could be targeted to help soften the blow of missing two key offensive stars.

Nevertheless, we won't find out for another few weeks who Celtic plan to add to the fold in January, which will create a sense of intrigue as to the profile of player Rodgers could pursue.

Pep Guardiola is right about baffling scheduling – football is in danger of eating itself with insane demands on players

The Manchester City boss had every right to lay into the BBC for ensuring his players had less than three days rest before their FA Cup semi-final

Gary Lineker and his colleagues were standing with Pep Guardiola on the Wembley turf after Manchester City had seen off Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final. They expected him to gush about how pleased he was with his players for overcoming a punishing and draining Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid to make it to the FA Cup final.

Instead, Lineker quickly found himself on the backfoot in the face of an impassioned speech from Guardiola over the fact that City's game had been scheduled so soon after their last outing, while the other semi-final between Manchester United and Coventry City, neither of whom had played in midweek, was organised for the Sunday.

"It's unacceptable" were the first words out of the City boss's mouth. "It's really unacceptable. Because I’ve won I have the courage to tell you. For the health of the players, it’s not normal. I don’t understand how we survived today. Why play today and not tomorrow, when Coventry, Chelsea, and United didn’t play in the midweek? Why not have one more day for the health of the players? Tell me how you prepare this final against Chelsea in the best moment of the season. How? It’s impossible. There’s no chance."

Guardiola's speech might have looked like a rant, but he had every right to decry the insane scheduling which continues to compromise the world's best players. And the television companies and governing bodies need to listen to him, because if potential audience targets continue to be prioritised over player welfare, football is in danger of eating itself.

Getty Damaging the product

City had almost disproved Guardiola's assertion by winning the match, but they did so by the skin of their teeth after being let off the hook by Nicolas Jackson's profligacy. As Frank Lampard put it: "This was not Manchester City They haven't got the spark in the legs, the energy of the press, the sharpness, the killer instinct."

Lampard added that that City's victory was down to "character", but most viewers tuning in to the game do not want to see character; they want to see skill, players running at full pelt and at their sharpest. They want to see energy, they want to see killer instinct. And that's what sums up the contradiction at the heart of this issue.

Television companies want the best matches possible and the most excitement. But if players are unable to play to their maximum as they do not have enough time to recover, the matches will be bland and spectators, both in the stadium and on TV, will feel short-changed.

Saturday's semi-final was, for large parts, an uninspiring match. It was in total contrast to Sunday's incredible game between United and Coventry. Would Coventry have been able to stage their unbelievable fightback if they had been in action on Thursday night? It seems highly unlikely.

AdvertisementGetty Just 66 hours to rest

Every athlete is different and a player in their mid-to-late 20s will often be able to cope better with a compressed schedule than a player in their late 30s, but sports scientists agree that athletes need a minimum of 72 hours for their muscles to make a full recovery.

A paper in the British Medical Journal explained that while performance recovery can be achieved within 48 hours, underlying mechanisms of muscle recovery are still in progress for up to 72 hours. In other words, muscles are still damaged for as long as three whole days after a match, making it risky to use them again at full intensity before the time has elapsed.

City's game with Chelsea kicked off 66 hours after their game with Madrid had finished. And this was their hardest and most important match of the season, one that lasted an extra half-an-hour plus penalties.

The FA did not know that Madrid and City's game would go to extra-time, but given how high the stakes were and how evenly matched the teams are, it was hardly surprising that it did. And even had it been settled by 90 minutes, City still would have had just 67 hours to recover before facing Chelsea, five below the time scientists agree players need to recover.

Getty'Plausible explanation'

Guardiola took John Stones off at half-time, but he did not suffer any major injuries during the game, although Erling Haaland, who had also asked to be substituted against Madrid, missed the trip to Wembley with a muscle injury. City are fortunate not to have a busier treatment room, because there is an established link between shorter recovery times and the rising number of injuries in top-level football.

A systematic review into the impact of match congestion on injuries by sports scientists from the Manchester Metropolitan University and Edge Hill University in 2023 revealed that overall, injury risk increased during these periods.

"It is clear from the review congested calendars in football are increasing the risk of injury for the players," said Dr Adam Field, lecturer in Sport Science and Elite Performance at Manchester Metropolitan University, of the paper's findings. "We suggest that the lack of rest time between matches is a plausible explanation, with players having insufficient time to recover, which might then impact injury in subsequent matches.

"From a scientific perspective, we know that the repetition of changes of direction, rapid accelerations and decelerations and sprints throughout a football match lead to fatigue, inflammation and muscle damage. These changes might result in an increase in soft tissue stress, reduce the ability of muscles to work effectively and changes the way a player moves, which might lead to further injuries.."

Getty ImagesDe Bruyne's battered hamstrings

City felt the impact of their unforgiving schedule last year when Kevin De Bruyne tore his hamstring during the Champions League final against Inter, and the same thing happened on the first day of the current campaign against Burnley, forcing him to have surgery.

But what was most alarming about the episode was that De Bruyne knew that it was only a matter of time before his hamstring gave way. It was a case of when, not if, his muscles would tear. Yet he kept playing in almost every game.

“I had been struggling for two months, but I was able to hold on well and with the club we were able to manage everything. I was able to arrange to be there at the right time," he revealed last November. "I still had a lot of stress in that final. Because of all those movements, I may have made the crack a little bigger. But it was worth it."

De Bruyne likened his hamstrings to "a wet kitchen towel" and compared his surgery to "a major maintenance like you do with your car". De Bruyne was unable to play in extra-time against Real Madrid as he was so tired.

Stones has missed most of the season due to a series of injuries, while Jack Grealish's campaign has also been marked by long periods out due to groin problems. Some players have been able to keep going, such as Rodri, but even the Spaniard pleaded for a rest earlier this month. Rodri has looked way off his usual best in recent weeks, another example of the negative impact of the gruelling calendar.

Transfer news: West Ham chiefs send scouts to watch "deadly" January target

West Ham United have made a solid start in the Premier League this season, sitting on 14 points and above the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United after eight games. The Hammers have also impressed in Europe, winning both of their Europa League games so far. After flirting with relegation last season, David Moyes will be both relieved and excited by his side's change of fortune in England's top flight.

The Scot could yet add even more improvements in the January transfer window, too, as West Ham look to book their place in European football for a third consecutive campaign, with scouts sent to watch one particular target.

What's the latest West Ham transfer news?

After losing Declan Rice to Arsenal in the summer transfer window, West Ham's summer spending was wise, and went on welcoming the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Mohammed Kudus, and Edson Alvarez, all of whom have hit the ground running at the London Stadium.

Player

Edson Alvarez

€38m (£33m)

James Ward-Prowse

€35m (£30m)

Konstantinos Mavrapanos

€20m (£17m)

Andy Irving

€2m (£2m)

Much of the credit for the Hammers' smart spending deserves to go to the recruitment team at the London Stadium, who could yet make more moves come the January transfer window, which could include welcoming a left-back.

The latest West Ham transfer news has claimed that the club have sent scouts to watch Guilherme Arana in his country's recent draw against Venezuela. According to 90min, the London club, alongside Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers, watched Arana, as the battle to secure his signature commenced.

West Ham's interest in the Atletico Mineiro left-back is reportedly the most advanced, which could result in a January move, as they potentially look to life without Aaron Cresswell. When the winter transfer window opens, the Brazilian certainly looks like one to keep an eye on.

Who is Guilherme Arana?

Earning a consistent place in the Brazil squad, Arana has endured an impressive rise as of late and remains an important part of Atletico Mineiro's side after recovering from a long-term injury. So far this season, the left-back has made 20 appearances for his side, earning the interest of the likes of West Ham, in the process. As a result of his performances in Brazil, Arana has earned plenty of praise, including from Zach Lowy, who previously posted on X:

"Arana joined Sevilla in Jan 2018, and, having left Brazil after the holiday season, arrived in Spain overweight. Took a while to get into prime fitness and lose weight, but never really fit into Sevilla’s side. That said, he was a different animal in Brazil, deadly going forward."

Arana's stats are some impressive numbers, too. According to FBref, Arana wins 1.39 aerial duels per 90, attempts just over 63 passes per 90, and makes 1.55 interceptions per 90, with all three stats in the top 70 percentile compared to other left-backs at a similar level. With that said, West Ham may have identified a talented player, making January all the more interesting.

West Brom news: Major takeover claim emerges from The Albion Assembly

West Bromwich Albion are still in the midst of financial difficulty at the Hawthorns, though some big comments which aren't under the restriction of NDAs have emerged regarding their future as a club.

West Brom news: Sarmiento injury, John Swift comments, Plymouth Argyle fixture

Cited by Birmingham Live, West Brom boss Carlos Corberan has been talking about loanee Jeremy Sarmiento's latest injury as he looks to keep the exciting winger fit upon his return to first-team action.

Corberan stated: "When I brought him to the club I knew he was a player we needed to control what we do with him. The positive thing was he was adapting very well to the training demands, because if you don't train the player he's not ready to compete and cannot perform. If you are training a lot with the player – then he cannot compete either. So we were managing with a lot of detail every single thing with him. I knew after Millwall the risk to have what's happened right now would be there."

In a transfer report from the same outlet regarding West Brom midfielder John Swift, it has been revealed that the 28-year-old instructed his agents to block any late summer transfer window exit from the Hawthorns despite late interest from the likes of Sky Bet Championship side Coventry City.

Swift explained: "To be honest it was so late in the window, I had no idea of it and when it did come about I knew it was two days left and nothing was going to get done – and even if it did I didn't really want to leave. As soon as I found out I rung my agent and told him I didn't really want to go, I wasn't interested in leaving.

"I wanted to stay and had my head on staying whenever we finished the game against Swansea last season. That's how it is in football, some things come right at the end [of the window], but for me it was a no-brainer to stay."

Next up for the Baggies is a home test against Plymouth Argyle next Saturday in the English second tier as Corberan's men aim to move into playoff contention despite continuous problems off the field at the West Midlands-based club.

West Brom takeover news – Managing director Mark Miles

As per The Express & Star, Baggies managing director Mark Miles has issued some huge comments in regard to West Brom's proposed takeover that could provide some much-needed clarity at the Hawthorns over the future of the club. Speaking at The Albion Assembly, Miles indicated that processes concerning new partial investment from elsewhere or a 100% sale of the club to succeed Guochuan Lai are on track to be signed off on before next summer.

Miles shared an expected timeline, which unlike much of the chatter around the deal is not under an NDA: "MM (Mark Miles) confirmed there were currently NDAs in place, which limited what he could say regarding investment/sale. However, he also confirmed he is speaking to a number of parties interested in investing in the club and expects this process to have concluded no later than the end of the season."

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Speaking to West Brom News, columnist Dr Dan Plumley has given his own thoughts on when the Baggies could be taken over, as he said: "We know that these things take time in terms of a takeover, it’s never quick or easy, it will be one thing agreeing on a deal, but another thing getting it over the line.

"I think there is a time-pressing need for this given the state of the club, for sure, but I think it’s unlikely given everything we’ve seen that you would get a deal over the line by the end of the year. I think you’re looking into 2024 for that one."

West Brom continue to perform admirably on the field despite uncertainty reigning elsewhere at the club and supporters will hope a resolution can be found as soon as possible.

Tottenham’s "incredible" star set to be offered new contract, he loves Ange

Tottenham Hotspur are now set to one of their key players a new contract, and he is keen to stay due to the impact new manager Ange Postecoglou has made at the club, according to a recent report.

What's the latest Tottenham transfer news?

Although the January transfer window is still a long way off, Tottenham have already started to identify potential targets, and they are now eyeing a surprise move for Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele, who has not made the best of starts in France.

However, Spurs will have to do battle for the Frenchman's signature with Arsenal and West Ham United, with their London rivals also being credited with an interest, and they may also have to fend off competition from elsewhere for Brentford's Ivan Toney.

Arsenal and Chelsea have also made it clear they are interested in signing the England international, who is prepared to leave the Bees soon, as he bids to make his return this winter, and Brentford would be willing to sanction his departure for a fee of £60m.

Not only are the Lilywhites keen on new attacking options in January, but they are also looking to tie down one of their key players to a new deal, with Football Insider reporting they are now ready to break their wage structure to offer fresh terms to Son Heung-Min.

Tottenham are set to activate the one-year extension in their captain's contract, prolonging his stay at the club until 2026, and they are then prepared to offer him a bumper new deal, which is likely to include a "huge" pay rise.

Son is now regarded as the main man at Spurs, after Harry Kane opted to move to Bayern Munich in the summer, and they are keen for him to extend his stay in north London, which he is more than happy to do.

The 31-year-old has been particularly impressed with Postecoglou since he arrived from Celtic back in the summer, and he is keen to be a part of the project the manager is implementing at the club, indicating he will be willing to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Is Son Heung-Min staying at Tottenham?

All the signs indicate the forward is willing to sign a new deal, which is very good news for Tottenham, especially considering he was made club captain in the summer, with Postecoglou praising his "leadership qualities."

Not only that, but the South Korea international has been fantastic for Spurs ever since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the 2015-16 campaign, and he has now reached the 150-goal mark, after a very impressive start to the Premier League season.

The former Leverkusen man has scored five goals in his opening six league games, most recently impressing against Arsenal in the North London Derby, in which he received an 8.6 Sofascore match rating, the highest of any player.

Having been lauded as "incredible" by members of the media, it is great news that Son is in line for a new deal, and Tottenham will be hoping he is willing to commit his long-term future to the club.
