WHAT HAPPENED?
Yamal is developing into a star at Barcelona, already racking up 40 appearances for the club at the age of just 16. He also has five caps and two goals for Spain, and with his star continuing to rise, he has revealed the strangest fan encounter he has had, with a female fan asking for his number unprompted.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Yamal has already made 14 starts this season, scoring four goals and registering six assists for Xavi's side. It is perhaps little surprise, then, that he is being approached by supporters in public.
WHAT YAMAL SAID
Asked about his experiences with supporters, Yamal said in a sit down with YouTuber , via Mundo Deportivo: "Recently, a girl approached me in an elevator, asked for a photo, and then said, 'Give me your phone number, I need it. No, I don't want it at all, I just want to have it.'
"I was speechless, especially since we were in an elevator."

Injury woes have led to Ravindra Jadeja’s return to the India ODI squad, more than a year after he last featured in a 50-over game for India. He will fly in to the Asia Cup as a replacement for fellow left-arm-spin-bowling allrounder Axar Patel.”Axar injured his left index finger while fielding as a substitute during Wednesday’s clash against Pakistan. Subsequent scans revealed a tendon tear,” a BCCI press release stated.Deepak Chahar, meanwhile, was named Hardik Pandya’s replacement. Pandya has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to “acute lower back spasms” that he first experienced during the game against Pakistan. He was stretchered off after bowling just 4.5 overs and didn’t return. The injury could also put Pandya in doubt for the West Indies series that is set to start six days after the conclusion of the Asia Cup. Given the series is at home, where India usually field two spinners, the team management may not fret over Pandya’s injury as they have a ready all-round option in Jadeja.Earlier this month, Jadeja returned to the India Test XI in England after not being picked for the first four Tests. He responded with a match haul of 7 for 258 and a career-best 90 in the first innings.Associated Press
Chahar, Pandya’s replacement, made his India debut during the T20Is against England in July, after he was flown in as a late replacement for Japrit Bumrah following his finger injury in Ireland. Chahar forced his way into contention after a breakout IPL season for Chennai Super Kings, where he picked up 10 wickets in 12 games at an economy of 7.28. He was also part of India A’s limited-overs squad that toured England in June.India’s third change is in the fast-bowling department after Shardul Thakur complained of “right hip and groin soreness after the game against Hong Kong”. Thakur bowled four wicketless overs, including a 10-ball third over that went for 17 runs. Prior to the game against Hong Kong, Shardul featured in the final ODI of the England series and then warmed the bench in all the five Tests that followed.Siddarth Kaul, who was in Dubai until two days ago as a nets bowler for the Indian team, is set to return to the UAE. He had flown home a little over 48 hours ago to play for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier domestic 50-over competition, and picked up 4 for 55 for Punjab against Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday. Like Chahar, Kaul also made his ODI debut during the tour of England earlier this year. All three players, who didn’t feature in their teams’ respective Vijay Hazare matches on Thursday, are expected to arrive in Dubai later in the evening.
Liverpool are interested in signing a hugely exciting Premier League player if he becomes available next year, according to a new transfer update.
Will Liverpool sign players in January?
The Reds have an extremely strong squad at their disposal currently, with world-class options dotted all over the pitch, and quality players behind them as backup. Jurgen Klopp completely rebuilt his midfield during the summer transfer window, bringing in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, among others, but he didn't add to the defence or attack.
Liverpool currently have magnificent attacking options in Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo, but that's not to say that that area of the pitch won't need freshening up in the future, especially if the former leaves at the end of this seasonm, as has been mooted.
It looks as though the Reds are certainly keeping an eye out for potential signings in the final third, following an exciting new update.
Liverpool manager JuergenKloppcelebrates after the match
Which Premier League star at Liverpool keen on signing?
According to Football Transfers, Wolves star Pedro Neto is being looked at as a potential acquisition for Liverpool next year should he leave Molineux, along with Juventus forward Federico Chiesa:
"Liverpool have added Pedro Neto to their wishlist if Mohamed Salah leaves next year, FootballTransfers has been told. The Reds remain aware of Saudi Pro League interest in Salah and are making arrangements to ensure that a viable replacement is brought in if he does leave. Neto, who is a client of Jorge Mendes’ Gestifute, has been on the club’s radar for some time.
"The 23-year-old – who has been a revelation for Wolves this campaign – is now under consideration along with Juventus player Federico Chiesa, as FootballTransfers previously reported, and one other unnamed footballer.
"Sources have informed us that Liverpool are unhappy with Wolves’ current valuation for Neto, however, and there is a feeling within the club that rival sides will add a further £20m to any asking price when Salah leaves Anfield."
Neto is a special footballer who is having a superb start to the season, registering four assists in just seven Premier League games, which is a good return for a top side, let alone a struggling team. The 23-year-old's efforts certainly have gone unnoticed by Wolves manager Gary O'Neil, who recently described his standout attacking player as "absolutely incredible".
Neto is such an exciting footballer, running rings around Liverpool during the first half of the Reds' eventual 3-1 win at Molineux last month and assisting Hwang Hee-chan for the opening goal, and he would come in as someone who could mature into a world-class player over time.
There have been some serious injuries for the Portuguese in recent years, which would make signing him a possible risk, but if the medical staff are confident that he has overcome those issues, he could be a fantastic addition.
Neto isn't out of contract at Wolves until the summer of 2026, so he clearly wouldn't be available on the cheap, but if Liverpool could beat other top clubs to his signature, it could prove to be a masterstroke of a signing as the years pass.
Arsenal are now in the picture to sign a Real Madrid player, who was recently called “excellent” by manager Xabi Alonso.
Title race heating up as January window looms
As we edge towards the mid-way stage of the Premier League season, the title race is very much heating up, with Manchester City winning their last four matches to keep the pressure on the Gunners at the top of the table.
Mikel Arteta’s side made hard work of it, but they just about got over the line against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out, picking up a late 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium, with the visitors scoring two own goals.
As such, the north Londoners remain two points clear of City as things stand, while Theo Walcott has made it clear he believes Aston Villa can challenge for the title too, saying: “When you have a difficult start to the season it can go one of two ways as a team and a squad but Unai Emery has obviously got that confidence in them.”
“They’re playing some good stuff at this moment in time so for me they are a problem. But I am concerned about Man City.”
With the chasing pack hot on their heels, Arsenal are looking to strengthen in the January transfer window, and earlier this month it was revealed they were preparing a huge bid for Real Madrid star Rodrygo.
However, the Brazilian forward is not the only Madrid player of interest to the Gunners, according to a report from ESPN Deportes (via Sport Witness), which states they are now in the picture to sign Víctor Valdepeñas in 2026.
Valdepenas, who is able to play at both centre-back and left-back, recently made his breakthrough at the Spanish club, and a number of clubs are in the race for his signature, with Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen also keen.
The 19-year-old is eager to remain with the La Liga side, but the north Londoners are closely monitoring him, and Madrid would be left with a decision to make if a convincing bid were to be made.
"Excellent" Valdepenas off to solid start in Real Madrid's first team
The teenager made his debut for Real Madrid in their 2-1 victory against Alaves last time out, featuring at left-back, and Alonso was left impressed with his performance.
The Spanish youngster particularly impressed with his ability to win back possession, making five tackles, the highest number of any player, while also winning seven duels throughout the match.

The Gunners’ defensive ranks could get even stronger…
ByBen Goodwin 3 days ago
That said, Valdepenas is yet to prove himself over a sustained time period, having only played for RM Castilla prior to the victory against Alaves, so Arsenal should continue to monitor his performances between now and the summer, rather than making a January move.
Following the conclusion of the international break, attentions can now turn back to Premier League football.
AFC Bournemouth drew 1-1 with West Ham United on the opening day of the season and now they have another London team visiting Dean Court. Chelsea are the side in question and they went into the international break off the back of an underwhelming 1-0 defeat to Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest.
Neither of these teams have come flying out of the blocks this season with Chelsea in 12th and AFC Bournemouth in 16th ahead of this clash. Both will be keen to turn their fortunes around with a huge win here, with the match set to take place on Sunday 17th September at 2:00PM (GMT).
We at FootballFanCast have taken a deep dive into the history of this fixture, revealing all the key statistics that you need to know!
AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Who has the better head-to-head record?
AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea have spent many years in different divisions and so this hasn’t been a common fixture until very recently.
Now that the Cherries are a regular in and around the Premier League, they have faced Chelsea more often. They have enjoyed a few historic wins but in general, it is the two-time Champions League winners who have prevailed in this fixture.
AFC Bournemouth wins 05 Draws 01 Chelsea wins 12 AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Who has more wins at Dean Court?
Interestingly, less than half of Bournemouth’s wins in this fixture have come on home soil and they have a worse record at Dean Court in fact.
Dean Court has been the home of Bournemouth since 1910 but for many years, they were actually called Boscombe FC. It was as recently as 1971 that this change of name took place and it has somewhat coincided with their rise up the leagues.
AFC Bournemouth wins 02 Draws 01 Chelsea wins 06 AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Who has more wins at Stamford Bridge?
When Bournemouth and Chelsea cross paths at Stamford Bridge, it never ends in a draw. Chelsea may have more wins at home than away in this fixture but the same goes for their southern counterparts.
Stamford Bridge has been the home of Chelsea since their inception in 1905 and whilst it does share its name with a 1066 battle that took place in Yorkshire, there is no correlation there whatsoever.
AFC Bournemouth wins 03 Draws 00 Chelsea wins 07 AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Who has the better cup record?
These two teams have never crossed paths in the FA Cup with all of their cup meetings coming in the League Cup instead. They may have faced off four times in that competition but one of those was a two-legged affair and so they are very rarely drawn against each other.
Chelsea won both legs 1-0 in the aforementioned tie whilst they also won by the same margin in the two more recent games, the pair meeting in back-to-back quarter-finals only for the Blues to continue dominating.
AFC Bournemouth wins 00 Draws 00 Chelsea wins 04 AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: How have the last 5 meetings played out?
Chelsea's Conor Gallagher
AFC Bournemouth got their first taste of Premier League action in the 2015/16 season and so a large majority of the games played between this duo have come in the last decade or so.
Chelsea have of course been a top-flight mainstay during this period as well and of course have the edge against Bournemouth, whether it be a league game or a cup game.
6th May 2023- AFC Bournemouth 1-3 Chelsea:
The most recent meeting between these two teams was something of a dead rubber towards the tail end of last season. Bournemouth were 9 points clear of the drop zone with four games remaining and so were nigh on guaranteed another year of Premier League football. Chelsea meanwhile were wallowing down in 12th with nothing more than a top-half finish still to play for.
It was 1-1 at the break at the Vitality after goals from Conor Gallagher and Matias Vina in the first 45. Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix popped up with late strikes to secure yet another Chelsea win against Bournemouth but as previously mentioned, there was little more than bragging rights on the line.
27th December 2022- Chelsea 2-0 AFC Bournemouth:
Both teams were in similar league positions ahead of the reverse fixture that took place in the hectic Christmas period.
The goal scorer and the assister from Chelsea’s Champions League final victory over Manchester City found the back of the net in a 2-0 victory in the form of Kai Havertz and Mason Mount, neither of whom are still on the books at the Bridge.
29th February 2020- AFC Bournemouth 2-2 Chelsea:
There was a break of a few years as AFC Bournemouth attempted to navigate the Championship under Jason Tindall and then Scott Parker.
Travelling back to 2020 though and Bournemouth were in need of points if they were to avoid relegation. Quickfire goals from Jefferson Lerma and Josh King aided their fightback against Chelsea only for Marcos Alonso to score his second of the game at the death, turning a huge three points into a lowly one on the south coast.
14th December 2019- Chelsea 0-1 AFC Bournemouth:
In general, this was a good season for the Cherries when crossing paths with Frank Lampard’s side as they came out on top in West London.
EFL journeyman Dan Gosling scored the only goal of the game in the dying embers which moved his side up a couple spots in the buildup to Christmas.
30th January 2019- AFC Bournemouth 4-0 Chelsea:
AFC Bournemouth’s biggest winning margin in this fixture is actually more convincing than that of Chelsea, and it came in front of their home fans.
Norwegian forward Josh King starred as he contributed two goals and an assist to the Bournemouth cause against a Chelsea side that boasted names such as Eden Hazard, N’Golo Kante and Antonio Rudiger.
Who has played for both AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea?
Dominic Solanke scores in Bournemouth's away victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
Gary Cahill (Chelsea 2012-2019; AFC Bournemouth 2021-2022)
The trend that will appear here regarding players to have played for both clubs is that it all starts in the capital.
Gary Cahill was a stalwart of Chelsea’s defence for the best part of a decade after joining from Bolton Wanderers. As he entered the latter years of his career, he went to Crystal Palace and then to AFC Bournemouth for a single season, after which he hung up his boots.
Nathan Ake (Chelsea 2012-2017; AFC Bournemouth 2016-2020)
Another defender to enjoy great success in the Premier League is Nathan Ake, but this didn’t happen in the blue of Chelsea.
The Dutchman was one of many academy players to be highly rated with the Blues but after just 7 Premier League appearances and a few loan moves, he ended up at Dean Court. One of those loan spells was actually to Bournemouth hence the crossover in the years and after impressing there, the club took him on permanently. At 28, Ake is now excelling under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and his move to the Etihad remains the biggest sale in Bournemouth’s history.
Dominic Solanke (Chelsea 2014-2017; AFC Bournemouth 2019-current)
Finally to a player who will be on the field in this upcoming clash all being well, Dominic Solanke.
Like with Ake, Solanke never really got a fair crack of the whip at Stamford Bridge and so headed for Anfield. It didn’t work out with Liverpool either but after a lot of criticism and a couple of prolific years in the Championship, Solanke has proven to be a very adept goal scorer in the Premier League.
What is AFC Bournemouth’s biggest victory over Chelsea?
30th January 2019: AFC Bournemouth 4-0 Chelsea
As previously mentioned, Bournemouth’s biggest win in this fixture came just a few years ago as they put four unanswered goals past Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga, now of Real Madrid.
That season, Bournemouth actually notched four times on four separate occasions. They did so against Leicester City and Watford whilst reaching five away at Brighton and Hove Albion.
What is Chelsea’s biggest victory over AFC Bournemouth?
3rd April 2016: AFC Bournemouth 1-4 Chelsea
Chelsea also managed four goals in their most convincing victory in this fixture but the Cherries were able to get on the score sheet in front of their home crowd.
Again, both sides were set to be resigned to mid-table in Leicester City’s title-winning year with this certainly being an off-year for the Blues, but that didn’t prevent them from dismantling AFC Bournemouth. Eden Hazard curled home twice despite this being a poor year for the Belgian and Cesc Fabregas was on hand to contribute a hat-trick of assists.
AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Key stats This will be the 13th league meeting between the two clubs in the Premier League era AFC Bournemouth haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last 5 matches Chelsea have won the three previous meetings with AFC Bournemouth Chelsea spent roughly £287 million more than AFC Bournemouth in this summer window alone AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Famous fixtures
Chelsea's Eden Hazard
26th December 2016- Chelsea 3-0 AFC Bournemouth:
The first of two famous fixtures between AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea stands out as the latter were on their way to a fifth Premier League title and a sixth in the history of the top-flight.
Pedro netted a brace for Antonio Conte’s side whilst Hazard scored from the penalty spot.
19th December 2018- Chelsea 1-0 AFC Bournemouth:
Talking of Chelsea winning silverware and that comes to the fore for the second famous fixture as well. 364 days apart, these two sides met at the same stage of the League Cup and one match was more significant than the other.
Who else but Eden Hazard scored the only goal of the game at Stamford Bridge in the quarter-finals of a competition that Chelsea would go on to win, beating Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final and then Manchester City at Wembley.
With the Premier League's increasingly global reach and its ever-growing popularity in America, it can be interesting to see which clubs have attracted the widest array of famous faces, something especially true with West Ham United. You may be surprised by some of the names on this list and wonder how on earth they even chose the East Londoners as their English team, but often, their reasons aren't too dissimilar from ours.
While you'd usually expect the rich and famous to support teams with a long and illustrious history of winning, like Manchester United, Liverpool or Arsenal, this group has instead pledged their loyalty to the Claret and Blue.
With that said, from professional boxers to actors and even a head of state, we at Football FanCast have taken a look at which celebrities support West Ham.
10 Ray Winstone
Now, there might be a few names on this list that shouldn't really come as a surprise to you at all, and one of those names is none other than British acting legend Ray Winstone.
When he isn't starring opposite some of Hollywood's biggest names, the 66-year-old can be found watching his beloved Hammers. On an episode of the Any Old Irons podcast Winstone explained that his love of the club extends beyond more than just the players on the pitch, saying:
"It’s not just the football but the area where I came from. I’ve got a thing on the wall here that says ‘in our family blood. If I’m on the other side of the world, and I might be in Australia, I remember being in the outback in Australia, and we got English newspapers flown in…you pick up the paper and there it was, the West Ham result.
"Don’t forget that because that’s where you’re made from and that’s everything to me, you know."
9 Lennox Lewis
While Winstone certainly has the credentials to play a hardman on the big screen, legendary boxer Lennox Claudius Lewis is the real deal.
Born 2nd September 1965 in West Ham, London, Lewis would represent Canada as an amateur and at the 1988 Olympics where he would win gold in the super-heavyweight category. Shortly after, he would make his way to professional boxing, where he would go on to have a genuinely unbelievable career, ending it as one of the greatest British fighters of all time.
In total, he had 44 fights, winning 41 – 32 by knockout – losing just twice and fighting out a draw once. He became the WBC heavyweight champion in 1992 and defended the title three times before losing it to Oliver McCall, only to win it back three years later.
Maybe most impressively, he fought with Mike Tyson in 2002 and won, cementing his legacy as one of the true great heavyweights in the modern era.
Outside the ring, Lewis is a massive fan of West Ham, so much so that in 2014, he was welcomed into the dressing room by then-boss Sam Allardyce to give a rousing pre-match speech to the players before they took on Norwich City. Unsurprisingly, the talk worked, and the Hammers emerged as victors.
I mean, you really wouldn't want to let down Lewis, would you?
8 Keira Knightley
Lucas Paqueta celebrates for West Ham United
Yep, Keira Knightley of Pirates of the Caribbean, Love Actually and Atonement fame is a massive lifelong fan of the Hammers.
In fact, she was one of the celebrities to partake in the Farewell Boleyn campaign that the club ran towards the end of their final year at the famous old ground. She sent in a video proclaiming her love for the stadium and the team, which was shared all over West Ham's official social media channels.
She also did her best to promote the Irons when she went on the American talk show Late Night with Seth Meyers, where she explained the meaning behind the club's anthem 'I'm forever blowing bubbles':
"The problem with the song is that the song is really sad. The song is about not winning and is, in fact, about your dreams fading and dying the whole time, so it's not really a surprise that we lose all the time, when we have this song!"
Well, West Ham's recent European triumph might just have changed her outlook ever so slightly.
7 James Corden
James Corden has become a household name in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and through it all, he has remained a massive West Ham fan.
He shot to fame in the UK for writing and starring in the BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey, in which he plays the character 'Smithy', who he wrote to also be a die-hard Hammer.
In 2015, Corden succeeded Craig Ferguson as the host of the American talk show 'The Late Late Show' and shot to stardom in the States. Despite being thousands of miles away and in a country not really known for its love of football, he made sure to mention his beloved Irons as frequently as he could on air.
For example, towards the end of last season, he congratulated West Ham's under-18s for their FA Youth Cup win over Arsenal live on air. In June, he was also spotted in Prague for the club's Conference League triumph.
6 Russell Brand
Brand has had a career and personal life full of crazy ups and downs, but through it, his undying love for West Ham has remained. Born in Essex, the comedian come actor has been a fan of the Hammers his entire life and still often goes to watch matches when he's in the country.
He can sometimes be heard phoning into Talksport to discuss the club, most recently to discuss Declan Rice's record-breaking fee. While Rice's exit probably hurt, we're sure the European trophy softened the blow somewhat.
5 Danny Dyer
Okay, this one might be painfully obvious, but can you really make a list of famous West Ham fans and not include the one and only Danny Dyer? Of course you can't.
The quintessential Eastender, and now a regular on Eastenders, Dyer is a lifelong, diehard fan of the Irons who is now a part of the Hammers family courtesy of his daughter having twins with fan favourite winger Jarrod Bowen.
While he might not appreciate some of the new chants, witnessing the father of your grandkids score the winner in a European final for your club probably makes up for it.
4 Dave Grohl
He might be the only musician on the list, but we think being the drummer for Nirvana and the frontman for Foo Fighters probably makes up for that. But why on earth does Dave Grohl support West Ham?
Well, it goes back to the early 2000s when Dave was on an extensive UK tour with his new band Foo Fighters. The legendary drummer explained in an interview with VH1 that he was, and still is, a massive fan of the Premier League, and as he was spending so much time in and around London, he decided to pick the Hammers as his team.
Arguably one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and one of the most influential people in cinema history, when Hitchcock wasn't working on another cinematic masterpiece, he was thinking about his beloved West Ham.
The Psycho director was a lifelong supporter of the club, born in Leytonstone, only about an hour's walk from Upton Park in East London. It's said that when he lived and worked in Los Angeles, he would get English newspapers delivered to his home every week to keep tabs on his Irons.
During his lifetime, he would've seen the club win multiple FA Cups, a UEFA Cup Winners Cup, and the Second Division title. Unfortunately he would pass away just before the club won a second Second Division title in the 1980/81 season.
2 Matt Damon
When you think of big Hollywood A-listers, it probably isn't long before you cast your mind to the Academy Award-winning Matt Damon. The Massachusetts-born 52-year-old has been nominated for 94 awards in his career, won 27 and, most importantly, is a self-confessed West Ham fan.
Damon's love of the Hammers grew from his time filming Saving Private Ryan in the UK. He explained that he was put off from supporting the then-dominant Manchester United as it was akin to supporting the New York Yankees in baseball – a cardinal sin for a devout Boston Red Sox fan such as himself.
After watching some Leeds United games with a colleague and coming to the conclusion that they were "terrible" – his words, not ours – he landed on West Ham as his new team, a happy medium at the time.
Given the last 12 months, we think he probably made the right choice there.
1 Barack Obama
Yes, you read that right, the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama is in fact a West Ham fan, and therefore he surely has to be the most famous one of the lot, surely.
While it may seem highly improbable that a man who was once the most powerful individual on the planet is an Iron, it's true, at the East Londoners have made sure to make the most of this fact as well, wishing him a happy birthday on their official Twitter account in 2016.
Apparently his love of the club comes from a visit he paid to his Kent-based half-sister Auma in 2002. This earth-shattering revelation came from one of his campaign advisors during his 2008 election campaign:
“Obama is a big sports nut and loves his soccer.
“He never really followed it, though, until he was told all about the passion of West Ham fans by some of his English relatives. He’s always keen to find out how his adopted club are getting on.”
Some clubs might be able to boast a famous actor, musician, or filmmaker amongst their fans, but only one can claim Barack Obama as their own.
And there you have it, ten of the most famous West Ham fans around.
It's a pretty impressive list to read, and it's mightily refreshing to see some of the globe's most famous faces opting to support one of the sides outside the traditional 'big six'.
What they say must be true then; West Ham really are massive everywhere they go.

Jake Ball said he hopes he “can bounce a few Aussies out” if he wins selection for the first Test in Brisbane
George Dobell in Brisbane20-Nov-2017Most players on the verge of their first Ashes Test might be hoping to emulate their heroes, but Jake Ball is hoping for the opposite. In one respect, anyway.Ball grew-up idolising Steve Harmison. Inspired by Harmison’s pace and hostility in the 2005 Ashes, Ball would take to the garden with his brother and “try to bounce him out”.But while he will not want to replicate Harmison’s infamous first delivery at the Gabba at start of the 2006-07 Ashes – the ball that went to second slip, a harbinger of doom for a grim series from an England perspective – he is still hoping to emulate the Harmison of 2005. And that means looking to bounce out the Australian batsmen.Broad hit by golf ball
Stuart Broad escaped serious injury after he was hit by a golf ball while playing at Brisbane Golf Club on Monday. Broad was on the putting green when he was hit on the lower back by a stray ball hit by a member of the club. He did not require treatment and is not in any way an injury doubt ahead of Thursday’s first Ashes Test.
“I hope I can bounce a few of the Aussies out,” Ball said as he visited the Gabba for the first time on Monday. I have the height and bounce.”I showed in the first couple of games on the tour that I can extract extra bounce and the Gabba is renowned for being a bouncy pitch. Hopefully I can show that and nick a few of the Aussies off.”I’m in a really good position at the minute. I think we’re going to hit the ground running and I hope to surprise a few people. I think we’ve a really good chance.”Ball has emerged as a near certainty to play in the first Test over the last few days, which may surprise a few. He has a Test bowling average of 114, after all – he has only played three Tests and two of them were in India – and he has been limited to just 22 first-class deliveries on tour to date after spraining his ankle in Adelaide. But the spells he did bowl clearly made a strong impression. Trevor Bayliss rated Ball as the side’s “best bowler” in the warm-up match in Perth, while Jonny Bairstow reckoned he was the quickest of England’s seamers. At every state, the management have said they wanted him to play in Brisbane where his height and ability to hit the seam could be an asset.”I’m really confident in what I’m doing,” Ball said. “I’ve played club cricket in Australia. I’ve always had in the back of my mind that these pitches can really suit my style of bowling and bowling in Perth and Adelaide reinforced that.”He admits, however, that there was a moment when he feared for his Ashes prospects in the immediate aftermath of sustaining the injury.”There was a split-second where I felt something wasn’t quite right,” he said. “I had my eyes closed and I was thinking ‘Does it hurt?’ All sorts of thoughts go through your head.”It was a bit gutting, especially with bowling so well in the first couple of games.”But the medical staff have been amazing. The last couple of days in Townsville went really well and I got through 17 overs at full pace and a couple of sessions of fielding. I’m now 100% confident that I can get through a five-day Test. I’m in a really good position.”You dream about playing in the Ashes. To be here and have a chance of playing is amazing and if I do get the nod, I’ll go out there and give 100%.”We’re not intimidated. All the batters have dealt with 90mph pace before and they will deal with it again. They can talk it up, talk about their pace, but it’s nothing that we haven’t faced before. We’ll look to put the pressure back on them.”
Recall came as a surprise but James Vince believes his game is well suited to the challenge of batting in Australia
ESPNcricinfo staff31-Oct-2017James Vince recognises that success in an Ashes series can kickstart a player’s career like few other campaigns, as he prepares to seize his “second chance” following a surprise recall to England’s Test team.Vince, 26, appeared to have been tried and discarded by England after averaging 19.27, with a highest score of 42, in seven home Tests against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in 2016.But, despite a low-key season for Hampshire in the County Championship, he was named ahead of Tom Westley in England’s Ashes squad, and is widely tipped to bat at the problematic No. 3 position in the first Test at Brisbane on November 23.”I’ve had 12 months away from Test cricket, and I was disappointed with how my career started,” Vince said. “But this is a great opportunity here to put it right, and get myself established in the Test side.””It’s a second chance,” he added. “Cooky [Alastair Cook] alluded to it before we came out, that an Ashes series is bigger than any other, if you come here and do well, it can kickstart your career.”Speaking at the Waca in Perth, where England are acclimatising ahead of their first warm-up match on Saturday, Vince conceded that his recall had come as something of a surprise, but believes that his game is well suited to the challenge of batting on Australian pitches.”I played out here when I was a bit younger,” he said. “It’s a different ball and we’ll be tested by pace. Hopefully from a batting point of view, there’s some good tracks out here with true bounce. George Bailey played at Hampshire, and he said I’d enjoy batting out here. If you get yourself in, and get past the new ball, there’s runs to be scored.”Vince was one of several players whom the local media struggled to identify as they touched down at Perth on Sunday, but he’s confident that that lack of recognition for England’s players will quickly change when the Tests get underway.”We’re here to win, that’s the bottom line,” he said. “We feel like we’ve got a good squad and a great chance to win if we can play good cricket. Our preparation in the next three weeks will be important, if we can get that right it gives us a great chance.”I hope I can play a part in us winning the Ashes. There’s going to be tough times – a bit of pace maybe – but nothing we haven’t dealt with before and that we can’t deal with. We’re very confident with the group of guys we’ve got here that we can get a series win.”England are braced to begin the series without the services of Ben Stokes, who was withdrawn from the squad prior to their departure pending further investigation into his alleged actions in Bristol last month.”It’s disappointing but at the same time it gives other guys an opportunity to stand up and make a name for themselves,” Vince said.
Arsenal could make a late move to sign Southampton star Romeo Lavia if Folarin Balogun is sold, but Mikel Arteta actually prefers another player.
Who will Arsenal sign?
The north Londoners will be absolutely thrilled by their transfer business so far this summer, with winger Kai Havertz, defender Jurrien Timber and, of course, star midfielder Declam Rice all joining.
Havertz signed for £65 million from Chelsea, while the versatile Timber completed a £38 million switch from Ajax. However, Rice stands out as the real headline-grabber, with Arsenal smashing their transfer record to sign him.
The Gunners will pay £105 million in total, including £5m in add-ons, for the 24-year-old and Arteta believes he will be a key player for the season to come.
“We’re really happy that Declan is joining us," said Arteta.
"He is a player with tremendous ability, who has been performing at a high level in the Premier League and for England for a number of seasons now. Declan is bringing undoubted quality to the club and he is an exceptional talent who has the potential to be very successful here.
“Declan has great experience in the Premier League at only 24 years old. He has captained a very good West Ham team and as we all saw, he recently lifted a European trophy. The responsibility and role he has taken on has been very impressive and we are really excited that he is joining us.”
Reliable media sources claim that Arsenal are also chasing a deal for Brentford's David Raya as Edu Gaspar and co look to hand competition for current number one Aaron Ramsdale.

Lavia, who is subject to intense interest from Liverpool, is another player who has been repeatedly linked with a move to Arsenal – though rumours have died down lately.
However, The Independent and journalist Miguel Delaney now have an interesting update, as it is believed Arsenal could make a late move for the Belgian if Balogun is sold before deadline day.
Perhaps most intriguingly, this could go against the wishes of Arteta, who is actually said to prefer Ajax star Mohammed Kudus. The Gunners boss apparently has a "particular idea" for his midfield.
Romeo Lavia
How good is Romeo Lavia?
Despite his young age, Lavia stood out as one of Southampton's best-performing players by average match rating last season according to WhoScored.
The 19-year-old boasted an impressive 86.4% passing accuracy, a higher number than any other Saints regular in the top flight (WhoScored).
Members of Southamptojn media, like reporter Sam Tighe, have heaped praise on Lavia for his performances throughout 2022/2023.
The former Man City prodigy, according to Tighe, was a "shining star" at St. Mary's Stadium last term.
I watched every game Roméo Lavia played last season and he was absolutely incredible," wrote Tighe on Twitter in late June.
"A shining star despite playing in terrible circumstances most of the time. Arsenal reportedly advancing on a deal…one to be very excited about."
If Arsenal can pip other competition for Lavia's signature, he'd come as an exciting addition, though it will be interesting to see if the club do end up going for Kudus on the wishes of Arteta.
