  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal had been exploring options to bolster their flanks throughout the summer window. With questions lingering about their squad depth in wide areas, particularly behind Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, the Gunners identified Madueke as a versatile attacking threat who could contribute on either wing.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite joining Chelsea with plenty of promise and fanfare, Madueke never fully settled into a consistent role at the club. His debut season was marred by injuries and irregular appearances, and while flashes of brilliance emerged, they were too often offset by inconsistency. His numbers were modest during his tenure – 20 goals and nine assists in 92 appearances – and with Chelsea undergoing another summer overhaul under Enzo Maresca, the club was open to parting ways if the right offer came along.

  • WHAT MADUEKE SAID

In a touching farewell shared via Instagram, Madueke addressed the club, teammates, coaching staff and supporters with sincere appreciation.

He wrote on Instagram: "Dear Chelsea Football Club, I want to thank you for the Last 3 or so years. To every staff member that helped me along this journey, thank you. To my teammates thank you for everything, I leave with only love and admiration for you guys.

"We achieved so much this season and I honestly wish you guys nothing but the best. To Enzo Maresca, it was a privilege to play under you, thank you for trying to better me as a player and as a person. Lastly thank you to every single Chelsea fan. Thank you for the love, the praise and also the criticism, I appreciate it all. I leave here with nothing but fond memories. Love NM11."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MADUEKE?

As he prepares to take on a new challenge at Arsenal, Madueke will be looking to finally establish himself in the Premier League. With Arsenal continuing to push for major honours both domestically and in Europe, Madueke will be eager to prove that he can be a valuable asset to a side competing at the highest level. The pressure will be on, especially given the size of the transfer fee and the expectations that come with it.

India vs NZ: The unstoppable force and the shape-shifting object

Rohit and Co have racked up nine wins in a row while New Zealand have become what they need to be to win

Kumble: India batters need to watch out for extra swing if they chase

Big picture: Big stakesFirst, the unstoppable force. India are having the World Cup of their wildest dreams and it has nothing to do with the fact they are undefeated in it. That is merely a byproduct of their planning leading into the tournament. They left 2019 needing… more. So they went out searching, trying as many as 50 different players across four years and 66 matches. Six months out from the showpiece, they had identified who they wanted and were focused on sharpening their skills. In the 15 ODIs between March and October 2023, they were picking all of their XIs from a set of 24.The chosen ones were given all the support they needed to live up to their full potential, which is why Suryakumar Yadav finally looks like he belongs in ODI cricket. Off the field, India were doing even better. The success of this campaign – and it is already a success – was built in the doctor’s offices and the gyms and the training sessions that enabled Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul Shreyas Iyer to come back from injury without losing a shred of their ability to the doubt that their bodies might break down again if they pushed it too hard.Rohit Sharma and his predecessor Virat Kohli have often pointed to a record of sustained excellence whenever they were faced with questions around the lack of ICC trophies since 2013. Whether the drought ends in a week’s time or not, the gains this team has made – the freedom with which they bat, the discipline with which they bowl, the trust they have in themselves and their method, the joy they have spread – already feel historic. Now, the immovable shape-shifting object. New Zealand become what they need to be to win. Rachin Ravindra began scoring mountains of runs in the top order, so the opener they invested in during the lead-up to the World Cup has to warm the bench. They’ve turned Glenn Phillips into something close to an allrounder, the man has doubled the number of overs he had bowled in his entire ODI career during the course of this competition. They’ve dealt with injury to key personnel. They weren’t derailed by the close-run loss to Australia or the one after they scored 401 against Pakistan. They pitch up. They do what they can. And then they are at peace with whatever happens. This is why they are so good in high-pressure games like the one that took place on July 14, 2019.Expect a cagey start. Each team trying ever so hard not to make the first mistake, trying not so much to beat the opposition as outlasting them. New Zealand are masters at this art; at just staying in the game long enough until there is an opening to burst through.Related

Form guideIndia: WWWWW (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)
New Zealand: WLLLLIn the spotlight: Jasprit Bumrah and Trent BoultJasprit Bumrah is the man that makes India unbeatable. Without him, they went out with a whimper at the T20 World Cup last year. With him, they thrashed the team that had tossed them out in Australia despite a massive batting malfunction. Almost 80% of his deliveries (175 out of 228) in the first ten overs are dots. He always comes back in the middle overs because if he can pick up a wicket then, a new batter will have to face the prospect of scoring those crucial, and quick, runs against, in all likelihood, Bumrah himself because he truly does come alive at the death with his slower balls and his yorkers.New Zealand’s best chance to win will be bowling under lights. The new ball has moved dramatically in Mumbai after sunset, and early wickets are the surest way to cripple an opposition, even one with so many fail-safes. Trent Boult has not always had the conditions in his favour at this World Cup but if the fates align to present him the opportunity to target the stumps and the pads of Rohit and Kohli and Shreyas and Rahul, he will sure as hell take it. And even if he has to bowl in the heat, he’ll be spurred on by an acute sense of unfinished business.2:29

Ravindra: Playing against India at the Wankhede is like a dream

Team newsNether India nor New Zealand will be looking to shuffle up their packs. Lockie Ferguson has been managing an achilles injury throughout the tournament, the Black Caps coach Gary Stead told , but he also added that the fast bowler should be good to play the semi-final. The in-between period is when the quicks have wreaked havoc. The weather is set fair and even if not there is a reserve day for the semi-final.Stats and trivia India currently have the most wickets (85), best economy rate (4.5), best average (19.6) and best strike rate (26.2) among all teams in the World Cup. Tim Southee vs Virat Kohli could be a fun battle. It has produced 205 runs at a strike rate of 101 but also six dismissals as well. New Zealand have been effective at scoring runs quickly in this World Cup, having the joint-highest run rate (6.5) among all teams in the tournament. Among opening pairs with at least 1000 runs in ODIs, Rohit and Shubman Gill have the second-highest average (74.8) behind only David Warner and Travis Head (80.1).Quotes”The underdog thing, from what you guys write, I do not think it has changed too much, but that is fine you know, and India have been exceptional.”
“I’ve played a lot of cricket here: these four or five games are not going to tell a lot about what Wankhede is… I certainly believe that toss is not the [decisive] factor.”

Joe Clarke and Lyndon James hold up Kent's survival push

A defiant rearguard action from Joe Clarke and Lyndon James gave Nottinghamshire hope of avoiding defeat in their LV= Insurance County Championship with Kent at Canterbury after they were forced to follow on.Nottinghamshire ended day three on 177 for 5 in their second innings, a deficit of just four, after Clarke and James batted through the entire evening session to finish unbeaten on 61 and 38, respectively, at stumps.Aron Nijjar had earlier claimed career-best figures of four for 67 as the visitors were bowled out for 265 in their first innings. Michael Hogan and Joey Evison then claimed two wickets apiece after Kent asked Notts to bat again, but after reducing the visitors to 78 for five, they were frustrated during a wicketless evening session. The visitors began day three on 219 for 8, a deficit of 227, but with the weather forecast looking ominous and with electrical storms predicted to arrive by mid-afternoon, Brett Hutton and Dane Paterson actually hung around for 40 potentially crucial minutes against Nijjar and Chahal, adding just 10 to the overnight score.Yet having taken 14 overs out of the game, Paterson started to hit out and he skied Nijjar to Jack Leaning, who took his fifth catch of the innings. That last wicket duo managed to bat out a further 10 overs. Asitha Fernando didn’t come with a huge reputation as a batter but he made an entertaining 14 not out that included a six off Nijjar where he dropped to one knee and plastered him over cow corner. With the follow on target dwindling, Nathan Gilchrist was handed the new ball midway through the 97th over and had Hutton caught behind for 31 with the second ball of the 99th.By now, the skies were looking leaden and Kent immediately told the umpires the wanted Notts to bat again. After six overs of resistance, Hogan produced an inswinger that splayed Haseed Hameed’s middle and leg stumps, bowling him for seven, but although Notts were 20 for one at lunch, after it Steven Mullaney and Ben Slater looked largely unthreatened until rain forced the teams from the field at 1:58pm.Despite a 38-minute delay, Kent were so far ahead of the over rate only an over was lost and Joey Evison duly transformed the mood in the ground with two wickets in three balls. He broke the partnership when he tempted Mullaney into a pull caught on the backward square leg boundary by the sub, Arafat Bhuiyan. Slater then inexplicably drove Evison straight to Hogan at mid-off.It was then Hogan’s turn to take two wickets in an over. He bowled Matt Montgomery for six and three balls later had Tom Moores caught at first slip thanks to a stunning one-handed grab by Zak Crawley. The visitors had slumped from 63 for 1 to 87 for 5 at tea, but Clarke and James looked far more at ease after the resumption, offering few chances and steadily eroding Kent’s lead. Clarke hit a Nijjar full toss for four to pass 50 in the final scheduled over, although to the confusion of almost everyone in the ground, play continued. The players, at least, seemed to know but no one bothered to tell the scorers, fans, press or PA announcer, until the umpires belatedly let it be known play was going to continue till 6pm, and a few desultory overs followed.

Brave seal nail-biting win after Chris Jordan heroics with the bat

Chris Jordan smashed an exhilarating 70 off 32 balls to give Southern Brave their first Hundred victory of 2023 in a two-run nail-biter over Welsh Fire.England star Jordan dragged Brave from 76 for 8 – with Pakistan quick Haris Rauf taking three wickets – to 147 with seven ginormous sixes and a trio of fours for just his second T20 half-century. Legspin sensation Rehan Ahmed, Craig Overton and last-set hero Tymal Mills all claimed two wickets as the 2021 winners bounced back from their opening game defeat to Trent Rockets.Brave were stuck in and after 76 balls were eight down and looking down the barrel of an embarrassing sub-three-figure total. Fast bowler Rauf was the main architect of the slaughter with 3 for 23 – picking up Finn Allen caught behind off a bouncer, bowling George Garton and bouncing James Fuller out. All done for Rauf’s express pace.Shaheen Shah Afridi returned to the Ageas Bowl for the first time since taking four in four balls in the Vitality Blast three years ago and had Devon Conway gloving behind. James Vince, Tim David, Leus du Plooy and Rehan also fell cheaply.Jordan had 8 off 14 balls when Rehan was run out before exploding in a style which got the 12,403 fans at the Ageas Bowl rocking. He thumped Rauf down the ground for his first six, fast forward to 22 off 19 balls and Roelof van der Merwe’s left arm spin bore the brunt of three consecutive sixes as long-off, midwicket and square leg were cleared, before clipping David Payne off his legs for a stylish maximum as his fifty came up in 26 balls. Two more sixes and 19 runs off the last five balls took the stand with Overton to 71 in 25 balls, with Jordan contributing 62 of them.David dropped a dolly to give Luke Wells a life with the first ball of the reply but Joe Clarke suffered his second golden duck in a row. Wells slogged to long-on and Stephen Eskinazi – who had scooped his first ball for an audacious six – was stumped after a 41-run stand between the pair as Rehan’s legspin caused problems.Tom Abell drilled to cover, Glenn Phillips’ top edge picked out deep fine and Fuller’s parsimonious first 15 balls went for just 11 runs to put Brave in the box seat. Willey hit two sixes off Fuller’s last five before Ben Green went six, four, caught at long-on to make the equation 14 off seven balls.Willey scored eight off the first four balls of the last set but needing three off the last he was caught at point as the ground bounced.

Even better than Rogers: 8/10 star just saved his Aston Villa career

Aston Villa have given themselves a terrific advantage to take to Birmingham for the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with Club Brugge.

Unai Emery’s team have one foot in the quarter-finals after travelling to Belgium to secure a 3-1 win on Tuesday night, thanks to goals from Leon Bailey and Marco Asensio, either side of an own goal from Brandon Mechele.

There were a number of excellent performances across the park for the Villans and one of those who stood out in Belgium was attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers.

Morgan Rogers' performance against Club Brugge

The England international caught the eye in this Champions League clash with an impressive showing in and out of possession throughout the 90 minutes.

Rogers needed to put hard work in off the ball to deal with the constant runs made by the Club Brugge midfield, and he stepped up to make three tackles for the team, whilst only being dribbled past once.

The former Manchester City academy star did not officially register any key passes or assists, but he did directly contribute to the goal that put Villa 2-1 up, as it was his brilliant cross into the box that forced Mechele to convert into his own net.

Along with his ‘assist’, of sorts, Rogers also completed two of his four attempted dribbles. However, it was not a perfect performance from the midfield star, as he failed to register any attempts on goal and did lose eight of his 14 duels with Club Brugge players.

There was a Villa player who was even better than the former Middlesbrough man on the night in Belgium, as central defender Tyrone Mings put in a display that may have just saved his career at the club.

Tyrone Mings may have saved his Aston Villa career

The left-footed defender only returned from an ACL injury that kept him out for 70 matches in October of last year, and he has only started seven times in the Premier League so far this season.

Tyrone Mings

Mings had a nightmare when he played against Brugge in the league phase of the Champions League. He lost four of his five duels and gave a ridiculous penalty away by picking the ball up after Emi Martinez passed it to him from a goal kick situation.

After that showing, you could forgive the England international for wondering what the future may have in store for him at Villa Park, even more so when he was an unused substitute against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, Mings has just proven that he still has what it takes to be a big player for the club moving forward with a huge display against Club Brugge, earning an 8/10 player rating from the Express.

As you can see in the table above, the former Bournemouth titan was a dominant force at the heart of the Villa defence, winning 100% of his duels without being dribbled past a single time.

He also made a remarkable clearance off the line with the score at 1-1 to stop the hosts from taking the lead.

Hans Vanaken’s header seemed destined to find the far corner only for the Villans skipper to sensationally lift his boot up to divert it away with his stud – a touch so deft that the officials did not even register it and award a corner to the opposition.

TNT commentator Ally McCoist said it was “one of the best clearances I’ve seen in a long time” and Darren Fletcher added that all the “momentum” would have been with Club Brugge in front of the home crowd if it had gone in.

Emery knows that he can trust the English colossus to step up and lead from the back for Villa on the biggest stage, and that may have just saved his career under the Spaniard after his recent struggles with form and fitness.

West Ham now "determined" to sign £108k-per-week striker for Graham Potter

West Ham United are serious about signing a striker who’s already scored over 20 goals in all competitions this campaign, with co-chair David Sullivan and the Hammers board said to be certain that he’s an ideal potential capture.

West Ham targeting new striker this summer

Graham Potter is still waiting to welcome back Niclas Füllkrug from injury, with the German unavailable for large periods of the 2024/2025 season, while Danny Ings is set to leave the London Stadium after his contract expires in June.

Signing a new striker this summer is imperative for Potter, with West Ham transfer chiefs already having one eye on next season as there is nothing left to play for this campaign, bar a respectable Premier League position.

According to various reports from the last few weeks, Potter’s side have identified a few intriguing centre-forward targets ahead of the summer window, with Man United striker Rasmus Hojlund attracting interest from West Ham, among others.

Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitiké is also an ambitious name on West Ham’s shortlist, but the in-form Frenchman will apparently command a lofty price tag of up to £67 million, with Arsenal and Liverpool rumoured to be contending for his signature as well.

Hugo Ekitike for Frankfurt.

There are also suggestions that West Ham are considering a move for ex-Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, who is currently on loan at AC Milan from Roma.

However, one player who’s enjoying a better season than all of these forwards comes in the form of Fenerbahçe star Youssef En-Nesyri.

The Morocco international was repeatedly linked with a London Stadium switch during his Sevilla days, but since departing the La Liga side, En-Nesyri has really come into his own after a very productive start to his Turkish Süper Lig stay.

Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri

The 27-year-old boasts a remarkable 26 goals from 40 appearances in all competitions this term, including six in the Europa League, and this hasn’t gone unnoticed at West Ham.

West Ham "determined" to sign Youssef En-Nesyri

According to a report from Spain, West Ham are “more determined than ever” to sign En-Nesyri after witnessing his exploits throughout 2024/2025, and the Irons boardroom are utterly “convinced” by his quality.

The former Malaga star is also just one goal behind Victor Osimhen in the Süper Lig scoring charts, and two behind the division’s top scorer Krzysztof Piatek, with En-Nesyri firmly in the mix to win Turkey’s “Gol Kralı” award, translating to “Goal King”.

The forward earns around £108,000-per-week at Fenerbache, which could be seen as a reasonable wage for West Ham to match or better if they wish to finally tempt him with a move to England.

Wolves hit the jackpot by selling a player who Gary O'Neil "really liked"

Wolverhampton Wanderers are on track to remain in the Premier League next season, currently six points clear of 17th-place Ipswich Town.

Vitor Pereira’s arrival was a timely one and, with another few positive results, he can start planning ahead for next season.

He will be desperate to keep Matheus Cunha, however, as the Brazilian has played a key role in trying to maintain the Old Gold’s top flight status this season.

Mathues Cunha's impressive season in numbers

Cunha impressed during his first full season at Molineux during 2023/24, scoring 14 goals for the club as they avoided the drop and hopes were high ahead of the current campaign.

During 2024/25, he’s been nothing short of mesmeric in the final third with the 25-year-old having found the back of the net 15 times in 29 games, recording four assists in the process.

He has scored against Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea, proving he is a man for the big occasion.

Furthermore, Cunha averages 3.3 shots per game in the top flight, along with creating 12 big chances and averaging 1.7 key passes per game for Wolves.

These statistics prove that not only can the Brazilian score regularly, but he loves creating chances for his teammates.

So, it was a pitty when he got himself sent off against Bournemouth in the FA Cup for an altercation with left-back Milos Kerkez.

Still, despite that incident, he’s been a fair bit better than a player Gary O’Neil cashed in on last summer.

Wolves struck gold selling Pedro Neto

Pedro Neto’s final season in the Midlands was a positive one to say the least. A tally of 14 goal involvements was enough for Chelsea to swoop in the summer, securing his signature for a fee in the region of £54m, a remarkable 260% increase on the £15m price-tag they initially snapped him up for.

This gave O’Neil some flexibility in the transfer market, but losing someone of Neto’s quality was always going to be a major blow to their hopes of surviving, particularly as the former boss rated him so highly.

So, how does the Portuguese compare with a man who could be Wolves’ next big sale?

Well, a return of five goals and seven assists in 32 matches certainly isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination, but the former Lazio man has started just 22 games all season.

In the Premier League, Neto has created six big chances, averaging 1.2 key passes per game while averaging only 1.4 shots per game. These numbers are worse than what Cunha is registering in the top flight this season.

Elsewhere, Neto ranks only in the top 42% for successful take-ons (1.5), in the top 35% for touches in the opposition penalty area (5.06) and in the top 41% for shot-creating actions (3.68) when compared to his peers in the Premier League this season.

Based on these statistics, it is evident that Cunha is enjoying a more productive season, while Wolves have certainly struck gold by selling the Portuguese talent for such a lavish fee last year.

Barcelona manager Flick has offered a positive update on Lewandowski’s recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during the 4-3 win over Celta Vigo in April. Flick’s encouraging remarks will come as a welcome boost for fans, with the striker’s potential return ahead of next week’s crucial Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter raising hopes within the squad.

Lewandowski has been in sensational form for Barcelona this season, netting 40 goals in just 48 appearances and ranking among the Champions League’s top scorers. While Ferran Torres has stepped up admirably in his absence, the Polish international’s experience and attacking intelligence could prove decisive in a high-stakes encounter like the second leg against Inter at San Siro, with the tie finely poised at 3-3.

WHAT HANSI FLICK SAID

Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Friday, Flick said (h/t Get Spanish Football News): “Yes, Robert could be there against Inter, he’s doing well and progressing. He’s doing much better than we thought, but we have to wait. We know he’s a professional; he might be there this Tuesday.”

Derbyshire have appointed Leus du Plooy as club captain after Billy Godleman stepped down from the role.Godleman, 33, had led Derbyshire since taking over from Wayne Madsen ahead of the 2016 season, although he was not involved in the Blast side last season, Shan Masood taking over the captaincy with du Plooy as his deputy.Godleman endured a tough summer with the bat in the Championship, failing to pass 50 until the final innings of the campaign – his 158 against Leicestershire represented more than a third of his season’s runs – and agreed to the change after chatting to Derbyshire’s coach, Mickey Arthur.”I sat down with Mickey and we had a good catch-up about the season and my thoughts about captaincy, future leadership and my seven seasons as captain,” he said.”I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as captain but reflecting on this season I think that with Mickey coming in and giving the club new impetus, the time is now right for me to hand over the reins to a new leadership group as Wayne Madsen did to me in 2016.”Seven seasons as a captain is a long time and the highlights for me will always be the strong personal relationships I’ve built with players past and present both on and off the field, while I am particularly proud to have led the club to their first T20 Finals Day in 2019.”I very much hope that I can continue to be successful with Derbyshire, scoring lots of runs in all formats, and look forward to providing any support and insight I can to Leus.”Du Plooy, 27, joined Derbyshire in 2019 and is a regular in the side across formats, although involvement in the Hundred might limit his availability for the one-day cup. He was born in South Africa but qualifies as a local through a Hungarian passport.Arthur said: “Billy has led the team with great purpose and will continue to be a senior figure within our squad, but we both feel the time is right to make this change and restructure the leadership team ahead of the 2023 season.”For more than half-a-decade, Billy has been a dedicated Derbyshire captain, however now we have the opportunity for a new voice, in Leus, to lead the team and bring a fresh approach.”Billy can now focus on what he does best, scoring runs for Derbyshire, without having the pressure of captaincy. His record is one that most sides would love to have in their ranks, and I hope we can see more of his quality next season.”
