Steven Smith joins Washington Freedom ahead of Major League Cricket's second season

Steven Smith has been confirmed as a signing for Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise Washington Freedom ahead of the second season of the tournament which begins on July 4. The move had been widely tipped, with Smith having signed as a brand ambassador for Freedom last year, and with Australia’s international schedule allowing a clear window for him to participate through July.New South Wales (NSW), Smith’s domestic team in Australia, have a high-performance partnership with Freedom, although NSW coach Greg Shipperd was replaced by Ricky Ponting in February.”I’m super excited about joining the Washington Freedom for season two of the MLC,” Smith said in a video posted on the Freedom’s social media channels. “I can’t wait to meet all of my new team-mates and play in front of some incredible crowds in America. I’m also really looking forward to working with Ricky Ponting again, and his amazing staff.” Freedom recently announced the signing of Rachin Ravindra, the New Zealand allrounder. They retained two overseas players from the 2023 season in Marco Jansen and Akeal Hosein.Smith, who owns an apartment in New York, has previously said it would be “pretty cool” to play in the USA.However, he faces a fight to earn a spot in Australia’s final 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, which will be held in June, having been unable to play much T20 cricket in recent times. Since his prolific return to the BBL for Sydney Sixers in the 2022-23 season, where he made 346 runs at a strike rate of 174.74, Smith has played two T20Is in India, two matches in last season’s BBL and as many games against New Zealand in February, where he made 11 and 4 while opening the batting. But after the New Zealand series, he said he was relaxed about whichever way the selection call for the T20 World Cup fell, with Australia having to name their initial squad by May 1.Related

If I’m there, I’m there; if I’m not, I’m not.”Smith joins Adam Zampa (Los Angeles Knight Riders), Spencer Johnson (Knight Riders) and Tim David (MI New York) as confirmed Australian signings for the second season of MLC, with more expected to join for the tournament which starts immediately after the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies ends on June 29.

MCC defers decision on Eton-Harrow, Oxford-Cambridge matches at Lord's

Club chair says regular discussions will continue after ICEC recommends traditional fixtures be scrapped

Lord’s looks set to host Eton-Harrow and Oxford-Cambridge matches for at least the next four years, despite recommendations from the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) that the traditional fixtures be abolished as part of the drive to increase diversity and inclusion.Bruce Carnegie-Brown, MCC chair, said that regular discussions would continue but the MCC needed to find a balance between “respecting members’ views, the club’s history, and our commitment to enabling many more cricketers to play at Lord’s.”Following the publication of the ECB’s official response to the ICEC report, Carnegie-Brown confirmed that he had written to the club’s membership with an update, calling the report a “comprehensive and thorough piece of work” and adding that the MCC was “committed to making cricket a game for anyone and everyone who has an interest in the sport by providing opportunities to play and/or watch”.The ECB is set to invest in the MCC Foundation and its network of Hubs, giving increased access to the game for children educated in state schools. But the governing body does not have the power to dictate which games are played at Lord’s, and Carnegie-Brown suggested that the MCC would not be deviating from the position it settled upon earlier this year, which was to review the status of the “historic” Eton-Harrow and Oxford-Cambridge fixtures in 2027.Related

MCC to shelve annual Oxford-Cambridge, Eton-Harrow fixtures at Lord's

MCC agrees compromise on Lord's hosting Oxford-Cambridge, Eton-Harrow matches

That compromise followed attempts to scrap the long-running hosting agreement in 2022, which led to a backlash from the club’s membership and the formation of a “Historic Fixtures Group” to fight the plans.”We announced in March that the annual fixtures between Oxford and Cambridge, and between Eton and Harrow, would be retained for a five-year period, with a review of the fixtures undertaken in 2027,” Carnegie-Brown said. “In light of the ICEC report this is a matter we will need to continue to keep under regular consideration.”Whilst this approach may not go as far as meeting the ICEC’s specific recommendation, we believe that with all the initiatives MCC is supporting, both at Lord’s and around the country, we are striking a sensible balance between respecting members’ views, the club’s history, and our commitment to enabling many more cricketers to play at Lord’s.”Among 44 recommendations from the ICEC report was replacing the Eton-Harrow and Oxford-Cambridge matches at Lord’s with “national finals’ days for state school U15 competitions for boys and girls, and a national finals’ day for competitions for men’s and women’s university teams”.While the ECB’s response will include steps to hold grounds hosting England matches to mandatory equality, diversity and inclusion standards, chief executive Richard Gould said that did not extend to penalising Lord’s for continuing to stage the traditional schools and university fixtures.”That was one of those recommendations which we have no authority on,” Gould said. “And so that’s something for the MCC to take forward.”We’re not linking the staging of matches with that sort of element. We would much rather look in the round and in the whole, and see what impact clubs are having within their community as a whole. And we believe that this is a matter for the MCC and not the ECB.”

Moeen Ali says important to learn T20I lessons from New Zealand series despite looming ODI showpiece

England last week began preparations for their 50-over World Cup defence by taking on New Zealand in a four-match T20 series. Which might seem odd, even accounting for the vagaries of the international schedule – except for the fact that England last week also began preparations for their T20 World Cup defence by taking on New Zealand in a four-match T20 series. The next global T20 event is less than 10 months away – despite England only lifting the trophy in Australia last November – and Jos Buttler’s team have just two five-match series scheduled between now and then, in the Caribbean later this year and at home against Pakistan in May.So while discussions of performances against New Zealand have understandably revolved around matters pertaining to the tournament starting in India in a few weeks’ time – Harry Brook’s omission or the rise to prominence of Gus Atkinson – senior members of the team also have a weather eye on 2024 and a shot at a third T20 title.Related

Allen, Phillips cut loose as New Zealand hit back with dominant win

Moeen Ali is one among a core of double-world champions and he was able to put England’s heavy defeat in the third T20I at Edgbaston in perspective. New Zealand “batted really well and put us under pressure”, raising their game after being brushed aside in the first two games; tougher competition may help in the short term, but England can also take on board T20 lessons relevant to a World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA.”I think it’s difficult to compare 50 overs to T20s, but it’s good being under pressure as a side,” Moeen said. “I think we’ll learn more in the 50-over series [against New Zealand] but still you can learn, the T20 World Cup’s not too far away and on these kind of wickets we need to adapt better.”You still want to be playing T20 cricket because of the [T20] World Cup being next June. It’s just how it is with the schedule. But T20s is a nice build-up to 50-overs.”It is also a measure of England’s depth and improved standing in both white-ball formats that they can plot twin World Cup defences with confidence. Their hopes for India are strengthened by a wealth of IPL experience – yes, different format, we know – as well as the inclusion of Ben Stokes, whose return has sparked the knock-on debate about Brook, while performances by T20Is debutants Atkinson and Brydon Carse against New Zealand hint at the talent coming through.”You never look too far ahead but we’re at a stage with England where you think about these things, about winning things,” Moeen said. “It’s not like we go into World Cups now thinking we’re not going to win it. We’re in that luxury position: it’s always great to look forward to these World Cups knowing you’ve got a great chance to win.”The mindset’s completely different now. Playing IPLs and stuff has been unbelievable, great experiences for everyone. We’re not overawed by the occasions, we’re in a position where we’re going into World Cups that we want to win and retain.”Such bullishness, unheard of before the Eoin Morgan-led white-ball revolution in 2015, explains how England could shrug off a 74-run loss – both Moeen and the captain, Jos Buttler, chose to praise New Zealand rather than focus on shortcomings – as well as some of the thinking behind Brook’s exclusion. As Morgan said last week: “In really, really successful sides, you have brilliant players that sometimes miss out. And that’s okay.”Moeen Ali grimaces after his dismissal•Danehouse/Getty Images

Brook has, after all, only played three ODIs in his career – but his talent in the shorter formats has been on show in the New Zealand series, with scores of 47 off and 67 off 36 in the first two games, and Moeen said he would not be surprised if he forced his way into the 50-over World Cup squad one way or another.”Harry Brook is going to be a great player. He’s playing great at the minute,” Moeen said. “He’s been unlucky to miss out but the way he’s playing he could come back in – you never know.”If someone like him missed out because of someone like Stokesy… He’s going to be a great player, he’s playing so well at the minute. It’s a great headache to have as a side and I’m sure the captain and the coaches are thinking the same thing.”One player whose confidence has looked a little low, despite a half-century in the first T20I, is Dawid Malan – the man identified in some quarters as most vulnerable to Brook being promoted before the final squad deadline of September 28. Malan’s 54 at Chester-le-Street was his only significant score in his last 11 T20 innings, a run which encompassed being dropped by Trent Rockets, and he cut a frustrated figure after being dismissed for 2 off 11 balls at Edgbaston.Moeen, however, backed Malan to come good again, with the final T20I against New Zealand to come at Trent Bridge on Tuesday, before a four-match ODI series that will see the build-up to this year’s World Cup intensify.”One thing with Malan is he’s never let the team down,” he said. “He’s been on all the tours and done really well, he’s always scored runs. He’s a top player in his own right, he’s never let England down. You’re guaranteed runs from him, he hardly ever fails. These two innings, he’s obviously human and people do miss out but he will score a lot of runs for England to come.”

Men's Ashes can have worldwide impact on Test cricket – CA chief

Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley insists a captivating Ashes can play a key role in preserving Test cricket worldwide. This year’s series is being played in a shadow of doom and gloom around the five-day game’s future, with Steven Smith admitting earlier this month he has concerns about Test cricket’s place in the sport. The rise of T20 leagues, and an increase in IPL owners buying out teams across multiple countries, looms as the biggest concern with the threat of players signing long-term, annual deals.Related

  • Crawley's bold Lord's prediction: 'We'll win by, I don't know, 150 runs?'

Fears were heightened last month, when Rajasthan Royals owner Manoj Badale suggested international cricket could be fitted into small windows around lucrative T20 leagues. While Australia, England and India appear safe, there are concerns for other nations given players can make significantly more money in T20 cricket than from representing their countries.South Africa will play four Tests in the next 16 months, while the vast majority of nations will play less five-day cricket between 2023 and 2027 than they did in the four years to 2017.England have made no secret of the fact they want their Bazball style of play to help save Test cricket and make it more attractive for all nations. And Hockley is adamant a strong series following on from the thrilling opener at Edgbaston can help the game in more than just those two countries.”We hope that will be a stimulus to encourage players and administrators that it is the ultimate format of the game,” Hockley told AAP.  “It is where legends are made, it is where reputations and careers are forged.”In commercial terms, we have seen record audiences for this first Ashes Test. Both in Australia and England. We have seen big audiences around the world. That is driven by the compelling narrative.”Last week’s first Test at Edgbaston broke several broadcasting records, with an average reach of 1.32 million people per day tuning in to Nine’s coverage in Australia, and 2.1m watching the final day in England on Sky.”What we’re seeing through recent weeks in the UK is the importance and enduring appeal of Test cricket,” Hockley said.  “People will talk about the Test match at Edgbaston for many, many years.”That is a great advert for Test cricket across all countries, because the reality is that T20 has encouraged different competing pressures. Both from a cricket side and a commercial side.”Hockley is confident international cricket can ward off the threat of becoming secondary to franchise leagues, adamant the sport is acting to ensure Tests remain as the pinnacle.Included in that is a belief that sport moves in waves, with Cricket Australia firmly of the belief Pakistan are one nation on the rise, with international cricket back in the country and healthy crowds overseas.”We are acutely aware of the pressures and demands,” Hockley said. “The World Test Championship is a massive step forward, providing context to all the series and also making sure there is a well-established framework to ensure we play a range of teams.”We need to make sure we are taking great care of international cricket. “We have just seen with our latest round of broadcast and sponsorship deals, that World Cups have never been more popular.”Whether it is other member boards or the players themselves, what is consistent is the love and care to want to make Test cricket flourish.”

Quem lidera atualmente é Germán Cano, do Fluminense.

More league goals than Idah: Celtic’s £2m flop is now a "complete striker"

Celtic supporters have plenty to look forward to for the remainder of this season.

In mid-week, the Hoops’ Champions League campaign heartbreakingly came to an end, ousted by Bayern Munich, leading on the night in Bavaria thanks to Nicolas Kühn, making it 2-2 on aggregate, only for the Bundesliga leaders to snatch victory deep into stoppage time.

Domestically meantime, having already hoisted aloft the League Cup in December, the Celts are on course for a sixth treble in nine seasons.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are through to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals while, ahead of Saturday lunchtime’s visit to Hibernian, sit a ginormous 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership.

Meantime, a former Celtic flop is flying south of the border, currently out-scoring Adam Idah in the EFL Championship.

Celtic's best centre-forwards

Celtic supporters have been treated to a fair few high-quality centre-forwards over the years.

Daizen Maeda

Right now, their attack is being spearheaded by Daizen Maeda, who’s now scored 51 goals in 144 appearances for the Hoops while, considering he’s bagged 11 goals since Christmas, current teammate Alistair Johnston recently described him as “one of the most in-form players in Europe”.

Meantime, the Japanese striker’s close-range header in the first leg against Bayern Munich saw him become the first Celtic player since Joe Craig in 1977/78 to score four+ goals in a single Champions League season.

Maeda got the nod in Munich to lead the attack, chosen over Adam Idah, whose statistics aren’t too bad either, having netted 13 times so far this season, including three in the Champions League, so let’s see how both compare to some of the great Celtic strikers of the not too distant past.

There are certainly some legendary centre-forwards on that list, all of whom have produced massive moments in a hooped jersey, but right now it’s Idah who has the best minutes-per-goal ratio, possibly helped by his significantly smaller sample size.

One striker who certainly did not make the cut, scoring just two goals for the club, has probably been completely forgotten about by the majority of the Celtic supporters, but is currently outscoring Idah in the league.

Celtic flop turned Championship star

Vakoun Issouf Bayo joined Celtic from Slovakian side FC DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda for a reported fee of £2m in January 2019, with club-legend Ľubomír Moravčík describing him as a “proven” goalscorer upon his arrival.

Fair to say, he did not live up to this hype, scoring just two goals in 17 appearances for the Celts, labelled a ‘flop’ by Joe Donnelly of the National, thereby loaned out to Toulouse, before being sold permanently to Gent for £1.4m.

After catching fire at fellow Belgian outfit Royal Charleroi, scoring 14 times in just 26 outings for les Carolos, Bayo joined Watford for £5m in July 2022, and has really found a home in Hertfordshire.

The Ivorian has scored 21 times in his career for the Hornets, ten of which have come in the EFL Championship this season, including bagging four as Tom Cleverley’s team smashed Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in November. That places him ahead of Idah with regard to league goals, with the Irishman netting just eight times in the Premiership.

This, according to Andrew French of the Watford Observer, makes him the first Watford player to score four in a match since Odion Ighalo in 2015, and only the seventh player to do so overall. It’s no wonder Cleverley dubbed him the “complete striker”.

Vakoun Bayo

For comparison, during his final half-season at Norwich, Idah scored just six goals in one fewer appearance, so, while you’ll be hard-pushed to find a Celtic supporter who believes they should’ve kept hold of Bayo, his form in England’s second-tier is something that surely no one at Parkhead could’ve seen coming.

Cheap signing Newcastle really wanted in January is now tempted by Tyneside

Newcastle United have established themselves as one of the top-flight’s top four contenders, but Eddie Howe has no intention of stopping there once the summer window opens for business.

Newcastle's summer activity could be determined by Premier League fate

Despite three losses in their last five Premier League fixtures, Newcastle remain firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification under Eddie Howe.

While the FA Cup fifth round offers some welcome respite from their top-flight duties this weekend, the Magpies know the significance of taking a step closer to another appearance at Wembley should they overcome Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe reacts

With a place in the Carabao Cup final already secure, Newcastle could potentially have three different avenues to qualify for Europe this season when factoring in their league position and potential to go all the way in England’s oldest domestic competition.

Howe will also be aware that the competition they enter may have a bearing on incomings, and they may also need to make some tough choices to meet PSR requirements. According to reports, Samu Aghehowa has been identified as a potential replacement for Alexander Isak should the Swede be sacrificed to adhere with regulations.

Departures will also make way for fresh blood to enter the fold at St James’ Park. Matt Targett, Callum Wilson and Jamal Lascelles could be due to leave upon the expiry of their contracts, which could free up significant wage expenditure after PIF gave Howe the green light to spend this summer.

Creativity may be needed to maximise the scope for recruitment on Tyneside this summer. Now, Howe could now revisit a move for one of his top January targets as he aims to streamline his squad.

Newcastle United could tempt Angel Gomes to Tyneside

According to the Daily Briefing via CaughtOffside, Newcastle are keen to bring in Lille midfielder Angel Gomes this summer on a free transfer as his contract at Lille runs into its final few months.

Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on the England international. Nevertheless, the report claims a move to Tyneside could be a tempting proposition for the Carrington graduate, who has two goals and one assist in 19 appearances this term.

Man Utd now readying five-year offer to sign "perfect" £30m star for Amorim

Ruben Amorim could make a surprising move.

1 BySean Markus Clifford Mar 1, 2025

Back in January, Gomes was Newcastle’s top target before the window petered out with no deal coming to fruition. Mid-season deals are often difficult to conduct by nature, but the summer may be a different proposition for the Magpies when bolstering the ranks is firmly on the agenda.

Featuring in a variety of roles across the engine room, the Lille man has created 14 chances on Ligue 1 duty this term alongside winning 31 duels despite his slight frame.

Newcastle’s squad is in need of new energy to replenish some ageing fringe players that may need upgrading before too long, making Gomes someone that should be pursued as a priority due to the fact he is available for nothing.

Netherlands' Stephan Myburgh announces retirement from international cricket

Netherlands batter Stephan Myburgh has announced his retirement from international cricket, in order to spend more time with his family. He, however, is still weighing up his future at the club level. The announcement comes a day after Netherlands stunned South Africa to knock them out of the T20 World Cup, in Adelaide. Myburgh made a 30-ball 37 from the top of the order which helped Netherlands defend a total of 158.”Hanging up the boots….,” he wrote in a post on Instagram on Monday. “To God be the glory!!! Blessed to have made my first class debut 17 seasons ago and international debut 12 seasons ago. Never in my dreams would I have imagined finishing my career at the World Cup with a win against @cricket_south_africa_ my blood will always be green. As much as a sportsman always want to win I had a tear for my beloved country. I am thankful for @kncbcricket and the Netherlands that’s now my home and have too many people to thank for my career. Jesus, @tineke.myburgh , friends and family, sponsors and all the supporters out there I can only say thanks!!! #GodIsGood #Blessed can’t wait to see my girls (sic).”

Myburgh, 38, made his international debut in 2011 and played 22 ODIs and 45 T20Is. Born in Pretoria, he started his career at Northerns in the SAA Provincial Challenge in 2006, playing alongside the likes of Neil Wagner and Paul Harris.Myburgh retired from ODIs earlier this year following the series against New Zealand. He has ended his T20I career with 915 runs at an average of 21.78 and a strike rate of 114.51. He is the third-highest run-getter for Netherlands in T20Is, behind Max O’Dowd and Ben Cooper. One of his best knocks in the format came in the 2014 T20 World Cup when he notched up a 17-ball fifty against Ireland, which at that time was the second-fastest in T20Is. He finished on 63 off 23 to help Netherlands chase down 190 in 13.5 overs to progress to Super 10s.In the ongoing T20 World Cup, he made 51 runs in three matches. Netherlands beat Namibia and UAE in the first round to qualify for the Super 12s, where they finished fourth on the Group 2 table with two wins in five games.

The 26-year-old, who bagged a sensational 15 goals and 14 assists in all competitions during his best season at Eintracht Frankfurt, was deemed one of the best versatile forwards available on the market (David Ornstein), so Spurs officials will have been very disappointed to miss out on his services.

Now, Postecoglou’s side have re-entered the market for another wide player, as they look to back their manager who’s been forced to cope with a serious injury crisis at N17 throughout the campaign.

Tottenham are believed to be the main contenders to sign Tyler Dibling from Southampton, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, but his English colleague Lyall Thomas has since reported that the 18-year-old will command a hefty £55 million transfer fee.

The price quoted for Dibling could be too much for Tottenham mid-season, but there is another potential loan option in the form of Barcelona forward Ansu Fati.

The Spain international spent 2023/2024 on loan at Brighton, where he scored four goals and bagged one assist in 30 total appearances, since returning to the Camp Nou and enduring a very mixed season.

Fati has suffered from a few injury problems this term, which have largely kept him out of Hansi Flick’s first-team, and he’s failed to make any real impact when available.

Tottenham make proposal to sign Ansu Fati on loan

As per one Spanish media source, Tottenham could offer the £227,000-per-week attacker a route back to the Premier League.

Indeed, it is believed that Spurs have made a proposal to sign Fati on loan from Barcelona, which would include an option to buy. The Catalans could be tempted by this offer, as they actively seek to find the 22-year-old a new club.

However, Tottenham would need to take on a hefty portion of his wages, and Fati is apparently more in favour of remaining at his current club despite his squad status.

Nevertheless, Postecoglou’s men have apparently “set their sights” on signing Fati before the deadline.
