Dharmesh Sheth makes Manchester United takeover claim

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth believes that Manchester United would be sold for a world record fee, should the Glazers decide to sell up.

The Lowdown: Second bids

Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe appear to be the main contenders when it comes to a takeover, with both parties now making second bids after a mix-up in the week.

Jassim and Ratcliffe’s respective teams asked for an extension after missing the deadline on Wednesday, with Ratcliffe’s fresh proposal going in on Thursday and news of Jassim’s second offer emerging on Saturday morning.

There was speculation of the Glazers retaining some reservations when it comes to selling, but if they do, Sheth believes it could break records.

The Latest: Sheth’s comments

Sheth was talking to GiveMeSport regarding a Manchester United takeover, highlighting sections of support that want the Glazers to leave Old Trafford for good. He said that speculation when it comes to a takeover will continue to rumble on but believes that a potential sale would be for a world record fee:

“There have been all sorts of talk that there’s a split within the Glazer family and that some want to sell, while some actually want to keep hold of Manchester United.

“I know there’s a big section of Manchester United fans who just don’t want the Glazers anywhere near the club anymore.

“So that will be a slight concern to them. But it’s still going to rumble on this one, because there are so many people interested in buying United and it’s going to go for a world-record fee, you’ll think.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

With second bids now in from Jassim and Ratcliffe, the ball is firmly in the Glazers’ court when it comes to a possible world record sale, eclipsing a $4.65 billion sale for the Denver Broncos last year.

Jassim now seems to be confident of winning the race to take control at Old Trafford, and hopefully, there will be further developments before the end of the season. The Qatari group previously wanted ‘things done quickly’ so they could help Erik ten Hag in the transfer market ahead of the summer, so some supporters will be hoping the Glazers decide to sell to them relatively quickly.

A stunning swoop for Jude Bellingham has already been mooted with Jassim a huge fan, so it could be an extremely exciting few months off the pitch at Old Trafford, with the club looking to build on a solid first season under Ten Hag.

Arsenal: Takehiro Tomiyasu injury a ‘big blow’

Journalist Paul Brown says that Arsenal losing Takehiro Tomiyasu for the rest of the season through injury is a ‘big blow’.

The Lowdown: Serious injury

As shared by the official website of the Emirates Stadium outfit, Tomiyasu has sustained a significant injury to his right knee that forced him to come off early in their 1-1 draw at home to Sporting in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League last-16 tie.

The right-back had to have surgery in London earlier this week, but has now been ruled out for the rest of the season,

The Latest: ‘Big blow’

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Brown says that losing Tomiyasu for the rest of the campaign is a ‘big blow’ given his versatility and how much of a consistent performer that he is:

“I think that’s quite a big blow. Tomiyasu is an important member of the squad, partly because he can play in more than one position.

“His flexibility when he plays in either makes him an interesting option for Arteta.

“I think he’s very reliable, and he always puts a shift in. You can depend on him, but not having him around clearly weakens them.”

The Verdict: Not ideal

Losing Tomiyasu is certainly not ideal for Mikel Arteta, especially considering that they have another defensive injury to worry about in William Saliba, who was also forced off against Sporting and subsequently did not play in their 4-1 win against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Japan international is equally as comfortable as a left-back or central defender as well as at right-back, and so his extra versatility has been of use to Arteta throughout a season when there have been other injuries in the squad, as he has made 31 appearances in total for the Gunners over all competitions.

Tomiyasu ranks highly among his team-mates in the top flight for average tackles, interceptions and clearances per game, as his defensive qualities from full-back allow the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli more freedom in the final third, so there is no doubt that his absence could be huge for the North Londoners as they look to chase down the Premier League title.

Luis Diaz not yet fit for Liverpool return

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz has “no chance” to play vs Bournemouth despite reports to the contrary, according to reliable journalist David Lynch.

The Lowdown: Diaz nearing return

The Colombian burst onto the scene when he joined the Reds in January 2022, igniting their quadruple push and registering seven goal contributions in the Premier League last season.

Unfortunately, Diaz has been absent since way back in October, however, when he suffered a serious knee injury in the 3-2 defeat away to Arsenal.

He has been working hard on his recovery, returning to running in training, and he could potentially have even been in the fold for Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth, with reports from his homeland revealing minutes against both the Cherries and Real Madrid as a possibility.

The Latest: Lynch makes contrary claim

Taking to Twitter, however, Football Insider‘s Lynch dropped a rather damning update to the contrary, saying there is “no chance” they take any risks:

“Considered unlikely that Luis Diaz will make his Liverpool return at Bournemouth on Saturday. Didn’t resume full training on Wednesday and no chance of any risks being taken.”

The Verdict: Huge player

Diaz’s eventual return has the potential to be absolutely massive for Liverpool, with the 26-year-old an electrifying footballer whose pace and quality on the left wing have been missed so much.

[freshpress-quiz id=“419074″]

The 37-time capped Colombia international has been hailed as a ‘top world level player’ by Jurgen Klopp and he had three goals and two assists in seven league starts before his injury this season.

Granted, the current front-three of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo are clicking right now, scoring six goals between in the 7-0 rout of Manchester United, but Diaz is still someone who makes Liverpool even stronger.

Klopp will be wary of throwing him back in too quickly but he has the ability to be a huge player in the Reds’ top-four push, providing even more ammunition in the final third.

Media slam Richarlison for poor Tottenham performance

The media have ripped into Richarlsion for his display during Tottenham Hotspur’s London derby win.

The Lowdown: Tottenham back in the top four

The big news pre-match was that of Son Heung-min being dropped out of the starting lineup for only the second time in the Premier League this season with Richarlison taking his place.

That experiment only lasted 68 minutes, however, with the South Korean international being introduced deep into the second half after Richarlison failed to impress managing just 26 touches throughout.

While Tottenham were delighted to pick up a huge three points and capitalise on Newcastle United losing yesterday evening to see them jump into the top four, Richarlison’s worrying league form will be alarming as he’s still yet to find the back of the net in the league this season.

The Latest: Richarlison fails to impress

Richarlison’s performance was picked up by several people within the media that took in the London derby which will have left more questions about why Spurs splashed out £60 million on him over the summer.

Sky Sports’ Joe Shread – who was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – insisted that Richarlison was showing rustiness when he struck an effort straight at Lukasz Fabianski as he said:

‘That was tame from Richarlison, with the Brazilian perhaps showing the rustiness of a player that hasn’t started a game club since before the World Cup.’

Luke McLaughlin of The Guardian was equally as unimpressed by that effort from Richarlison as he said: ‘It’s all a bit laboured, all slightly mistimed’

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-4/” title=”Tottenham latest news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/cropped-tottenham-fans.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Finally, George Sessions of the PA claimed that when the Brazilian was subbed off he looked rather ‘dejected’ at the decision.

The Verdict: Competition for places is key

While it certainly is always a bold decision to bench someone of Son’s calibre and ability, it always appeared to work as he’s been demoted twice in the league this term and it’s resulted in the winger netting four goals in those encounters.

The fact that he has netted once again would suggest that Richarlison will be set for a few more games starting on the bench because getting Son back to top form will be imperative for Tottenham.

However, he will know that the Spurs staff aren’t worried about benching him as they have a £60 million attacker as his backup, which may be what he needs to get him firing on all cylinders knowing that competition is very rife.

Everton ‘in talks’ to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Everton are reportedly ‘in talks’ to sign Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres before the end of the month.

The Lowdown: New signings ‘likely’

90min journalist Chris Smith says that the Toffees are ‘likely’ to sign a couple of players before the transfer window closes, with Sean Dyche set to be announced as the new manager at Goodison Park.

The former Burnley boss will need more help in the attacking third especially, given the departure of winger Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United.

They have been reportedly interested in signing Gyokeres, of whom Dyche is thought to be an admirer.

The Latest: Gyokeres in ‘talks’ over Everton move

As per Football Insider, Everton are now ‘in talks’ over signing the Sweden international, and they want two attacking signings.

They scouted the striker on Saturday playing for Coventry, when he grabbed both assists in a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town, and are lining up a £15m bid for him.

However, journalist Alan Nixon has since claimed that it will take £25m to sign Gyokeres before Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.

The Verdict: Desperate times…

Desperate times call for desperate measures, so Everton will likely have to pay over the odds to sign Gyokeres before the deadline.

Hailed by his manager Mark Robins for his “unbelievable” power and technique , Gyokeres’ two assists at the weekend brought him up to a respectable tally of four in the Championship so far this season, but it is his 12 goals which show that he is a real poacher in the penalty box (Transfermarkt).

The Toffees are struggling to score with just 15 goals all season in the Premier League, and with Dyche’s added approval, Gyokeres would add some much-needed firepower up front which could help them massively in their relegation battle.

Nicolo Zaniolo wants Spurs move in Jan

Tottenham Hotspur chief Fabio Paratici could be about to repeat his Dejan Kulusevski masterclass…

What’s the word?

According to Sport Mediaset, the Lilywhites are trying to sign AS Roma attacking midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo on an initial loan with an obligation to buy of around €20m (£18m) based on certain conditions, such as qualifying for the Champions League.

The Serie A outfit want a permanent deal for around €40m (£35m), with less than 18 months to run on his current £78.6k-per-week contract at the Stadio Olimpico.

It’s believed that Paratici has opened talks with the Europa Conference League champions but Premier League rivals West Ham United, Newcastle United and Leicester City are also keen.

The report also states that Zaniolo has said ‘yes’ to moving this month, so the onus is very much now on Spurs and their recruitment staff.

Shades of Kulusevski again

This switch would very much have shades of last January when Tottenham landed Kulusevski on an initial loan from Juventus. As per Fabrizio Romano, it will become permanent for €35m (£30m), either by qualifying for the UCL or paying a fee outright.

The Sweden dynamo has become an instant hit in north London, having provided 20 goal contributions in his 35 appearances. This season, his influence in the final third has been crucial, leading the way for creativity with an average of two key passes per game, via WhoScored.

It does mean, however, that Antonio Conte’s side struggle in his absence, so adding more playmakers to the team would certainly be a smart move with a little over a week to go in the window.

Zaniolo could be the answer, earning statistical likeness to players such as Heung-min Son, Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling, per FBref’s model.

The Italy international is capable of playing anywhere behind the striker and whilst injuries have somewhat thwarted his progress this term, he has still delivered five goal contributions from 1,106 minutes of game time. That continues from last season’s returns of eight goals and nine assists across all competitions.

Such form and exploits have seen him lauded as a “frightening talent” by CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs and “explosive” by ex-Roma star Francesco Totti.

There is also a touch of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard about him, according to former Inter Milan coach Stefano Vecchi, so those comparisons – tied in with the aforementioned comparable trio – bode well for Zaniolo’s chances of making a successful transition to the Premier League, just as Kulusevski has done.

As such, with Spurs needing more creativity and depth, Paratici must push ahead with plans to sign the “lethal playmaker” – as described by journalist Zach Lowry – this month, given the evidence above.

Guerreiro can be Leeds’ own Cancelo

Leeds United are reportedly very interested in signing Borussia Dortmund star Raphael Guerreiro this year and the Portuguese left-back could be Jesse Marsch’s own Joao Cancelo at Elland Road.

TEAMtalk suggested in December that the Whites were readying a contract offer for the 29-year-old who looks set to leave Signal Iduna Park this year, as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

Leeds could approach the Portugal international on a pre-contract deal now but may be convinced to bring him to Elland Road this month considering Marsch’s lack of options at left-back, with “liability” Junior Firpo having flattered to deceive since joining the club from Barcelona.

It would undoubtedly be a coup for the Yorkshire outfit if they could sign Guerreiro this month, given that he has experience playing at the top level with Dortmund in the Champions League, with two goals in just four appearances in Europe so far this campaign.

This season has seen the left-back contribute one goal and two assists in 12 Bundesliga appearances, with WhoScored awarding him a solid 6.88 average rating.

Considering this would rank him as the second-best performer in Leeds’ squad, it is clear the quality he could add to Marsch’s squad, and it is easy to see why Victor Orta is reportedly so keen to do a deal.

Dortmund manager Eden Terzic was full of praise for the defender last year, saying: “[He is] an amazing player. So you see especially against a deep defending side, we want him to get on the ball because he makes things happen.”

Should he arrive at Elland Road this year, he could potentially emulate Portuguese teammate Cancelo, who has established himself as one of the world’s best in his position since joining Manchester City, contributing nine goals and 21 assists in 122 appearances for the Citizens.

According to FBref, Cancelo is the second-most similar player to Guerreiro when compared to other full-backs across Europe.

The two players have registered remarkably similar statistics this season with regard to goals and assists per 90 (0.26 vs 0.23), passes leading to a shot (26 vs 28) and blocks (14 vs 15).

WhoScored also suggests that both Cancelo and Guerreiro excel at passing and holding onto the ball, which suggests they are modern, attack-minded full-backs.

Given Cancelo’s success at City, Marsch would surely be foolish to turn down a player so similar, so he should do all he can to bring Guerreiro – who could command around £22m – to Elland Road this month.

David Ornstein drops big claim on Southampton’s Jones

Journalist David Ornstein has admitted that the jury could still be out on Southampton’s Nathan Jones after another defeat.

The Lowdown: Pressure is already mounting

Southampton decided to take a punt on Jones to help guide them away from the threat of relegation, but it appears his lack of top-flight experience is showing.

This is because the only team he’s managed to beat as Southampton boss is Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup, while the Saints are bottom of the Premier League.

It is certainly too early to be judging Jones and questioning his future on the south coast, but Southampton’s owners won’t be happy with what’s been happening thus far.

The Latest: Jury out on Nathan Jones

Ornstein believes it’s too early to judge Jones but has acknowledged on the NBC Sports YouTube channel this is a massive period for the Welshman.

He said: “They [Sport Republic] need to focus on Southampton because they don’t want to be running a club that’s in the Championship and as things stand they’re heading that way.

“They play a crucial game next against Nottingham Forest, they then face Everton as well and they’ll want to scrape their way out of it.

“Is Nathan Jones the man to pull them through? The jury might seem to be out, but it is very early days. This is a massive period for the new ownership at Southampton.”

The Verdict: Jones already under pressure

Given how much money is on offer to clubs being in the Premier League, it’s no surprise eyes are still on Jones after just three league games as the Saints can’t afford to drop out.

However, the owners must give Jones some financial backing this month as he’s yet to put his stamp on the side and is working with a load of players he had no say in signing.

Therefore, while Jones will know he’s under pressure after defeats to Brighton and Fulham in quick succession, the club must act responsibly and avoid any kneejerk reactions to their league position.

Man City table bid for Gvardiol

Manchester City have tabled a huge bid for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, according to a new report.

The Lowdown: Man City target defender

Man City manager Pep Guardiola already has incredible strength in depth in the centre-back department, considering Aymeric Laporte, Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji and John Stones are all at his disposal.

It remains to be seen whether they will all stay at the club if a move for Gvardiol transpires, but the Croatian has become the Spaniard’s latest target, perhaps with the long-term future in mind, given that he is just 20 and all of the aforementioned current stars are 25 and above.

The Latest: Offer made

Foot Mercato are now reporting that Guardiola has taken his interest one step further by lodging a ‘crazy’ transfer bid exceeding £85m for the titan, while City are also trying to tempt Leipzig into a sale by including a resale percentage as part of the deal.

The Sky Blues are facing competition from other Premier League clubs for his signature, with Manchester United and Chelsea also formulating offers, although these are not believed to be as lucrative as the proposal put forward by the Sky Blues.

The Verdict: Get it done?

It is hard to argue that City particularly need a new centre-back, given the array of defensive talent already at the Etihad Stadium, however it cannot be denied that the £59k-per-week earner would be a quality addition for any side.

At the World Cup with Croatia, the colossus has been one of the country’s most consistent performers en-route to the semi-final stage, boasting a SofaScore match rating of seven or above in every outing so far, most recently absolutely vital in the victory against Brazil, making seven clearances and blocking two shots in another fine display.

It also must be noted that the 6 foot 1 enforcer would be perfectly suited to Guardiola’s trademark style of play, with the ‘monster’, as dubbed by Fabrizio Romano, registering an average of 87.58 passes attempted per 90 over the past year, placing him in the 99th percentile compared to his positional peers.

Gvardiol would be a mainstay at the heart of the City defence for years to come, but they may have to part with an existing option if they are to complete a transfer switch.
