Khawaja's back issues to be examined as Australia float flexible batting order

Australia coach Andrew McDonald has said there will be further investigation into Usman Khawaja’s back issue in the lead-up to the Brisbane Test and admitted the selectors have “a lot to consider” around the batting order after Travis Head’s match-winning performance as a stand-in opener.Australia’s players and staff flew to their home cities on Sunday after the first Ashes Test finished inside two days in Perth.Khawaja’s back spasms have become a major talking point, with the 38-year-old unable to open in both innings and only able to bat once in the game. He also dropped a catch at slip before leaving the field in England’s second innings.Related

McDonald confirmed that the medical staff would look into the injury further as Khawaja has never suffered a back spasm of that nature in his lengthy career.”There was discussions around further investigation to whether it was more serious than what we sort of first anticipated,” McDonald said on Monday. “So we’ll work through that. We’ll get a squad together. We’ll step through everything that we normally step through.”We get to camp in six days’ time. It’s a long way out, a lot of information to gather between now and then, and hopefully Usman is fit and available for selection.”I think anytime you spasm, it’s a result of something going on in your back. So I think that further investigation is just due diligence around that. You spasm for a reason. He hasn’t had it before, so that’s what will probably entail a bit more further investigation.”My gut feel is that it should be okay, but as I said, we’ll wait for that information to present.”McDonald dismissed Khawaja’s age as a reason for the back issue flaring up. Khawaja did play 18 holes of golf on each of three days leading into the Test match (54 holes in total), something he had done previously leading into a Test without issue. But McDonald, like CA chief executive Todd Greenberg, reiterated that it had never caused a problem before.”These things can happen,” McDonald said. “And I don’t think you can join the dots to something around his age. I think it’s just one of those things that’s happened.”Travis Head smashed his way to an extraordinary 69-ball century•Getty Images

McDonald was asked whether Head’s extraordinary performance in the second innings, where he made 123 off 83 balls to win the Test match, would cause a rethink about a permanent change at the top of the order.”We’ve got a lot to consider,” McDonald said. “Batting orders are always debated heavily over a period of time. Middle order players haven’t been sort of the ones that have been the popular ones to open the batting. So we’ll discuss and work through what it looks like.”I think it gave us a little bit of a lens potentially to the future in terms of adjusting batting orders in second innings, which is something that we have discussed. To be able to put different people in different positions with the scenario that was presented. So this one happened probably through a bit more chance and obviously the unfortunate injury to Usman. But I think it really probably opens up that discussion more than, more than anything else for us.”Australia’s selectors do not have a history of making a change off a sample size of one innings. Steven Smith made 91 not out in an unsuccessful fourth innings chase in his fourth innings as an opener but the experiment was shelved after he averaged 28 across eight Test innings in the role. The impact Head had on the pink-ball Test in Adelaide last year, where he made a match-winning century at No. 5 in Australia’s first innings having been shielded from batting in a difficult period under lights on the first night, will also be a key factor in any decision to move him permanently to the top for Brisbane. Head had looked reasonably good in the first innings in Perth when he entered in the 16th over before shovelling a pull shot to mid-on.The potential to be flexible with Head looks more appealing to the coach.”We’ve sort of hypothesized around a middle order player going up to the top order if the second innings happened to flatten out,” McDonald said. “In particular, if we needed quick runs, and the wicket was going to deteriorate. So in our strategy and our planning, we have tabled that from time to time.”We’ve had a conversation around Travis opening the batting for a long period of time, and Trav’s has been on the record this week and previously around that also. I suppose, now that it’s out there, yeah, happy to talk about it. Will we do it? If it presents at the right time, potentially.”

Cummins a chance for Gabba as Australia delay naming XI

Door left ajar for Pat Cummins to return as captain with Australia still debating the make-up of their side

Alex Malcolm03-Dec-2025Pat Cummins is a chance of making a stunning comeback to Australia’s XI for the second Test against England at the Gabba with a final decision to be made by selectors on Wednesday afternoon following a further inspection of the pitch.Australia’s stand-in captain Steven Smith did not confirm the final XI on Wednesday’s press conference, with an update later in the day saying it would be named at the toss, keeping the door open for Cummins to return as captain and also leaving open the possibility of Australia excluding their sole specialist spinner Nathan Lyon for the second day-night Test in a row.Australia also need to replace injured opener Usman Khawaja, and Josh Inglis appears the favourite to come into a middle-order role ahead of Beau Webster, with Travis Head to shift up to open. But Smith could not confirm that either.Related

Khawaja out of Brisbane Test after failing to recover

“A whole heap of things I think are on the table,” Smith said. “We’ll wait and see what the wicket looks like, and from there we’ll determine a playing XI.”Cummins’ inclusion would be a surprise given he was not named in Australia’s 14-man squad for the Gabba Test when it was announced last Friday. However, he was never officially ruled out because of how well he had been bowling in the nets in Perth and Brisbane after recovering from the bone stress injury in his lower back.”He looks pretty good to me the way he’s bowled in the nets,” Smith said. “Obviously, games are a different intensity, for sure, but he’s tracking really nicely. He knows his body well, and yeah, we’ll wait and see.”There is a possibility that he could replace Brendan Doggett in the XI but that would come with risks regarding his workloads. Given he has not played any cricket since July, there would be more comfort among Australia’s medical staff if he played in an all-pace attack given his bowling loads would likely be less in such a scenario if Australia’s selectors decided Lyon was surplus to requirements in the pink-ball game.0:46

McGlashan: An unfortunate end if Khawaja’s Test career is over

Lyon was left out of Australia’s most recent day-night Test in Jamaica in July and only bowled one over in last year’s pink-ball Test in Adelaide against India. He also did not bowl a ball in Australia’s last Ashes day-night Test in Hobart in 2022. He only bowled two overs in the first Test in Perth, both of which came in the first innings, as England only batted for 67.3 overs across the two-day Test.Lyon did bowl 50 overs in the last day-night Test as the Gabba in 2024 but Smith wasn’t sure if he was assured of his place.”I’m not sure,” Smith said. “We’ll look at the surface, as I said, and we’ll sum things up from there. And I think here’s a place where Nathan’s done really well in the past. He’s a quality bowler. But we’ll weigh up the options and we’ll see how we go.”The Gabba surface has looked very green from afar in the build-up to the Test match. There is warm, dry weather expected in Brisbane for the first three days of the game.”It’s still quite grassy, a little soft,” Smith said. “It’s obviously going to bake under the sun again today, and I think [the curator] is going to take a little bit off it, so might look a little bit different in a couple hours’ time.”

Amid all the boxes they ticked in the Sylhet Test against Ireland, Najmul Hossain Shanto getting back in his groove would make the Bangladesh set up the happiest.Shanto struck his eighth Test century and his fourth as Test captain – 100 in 114 balls – on his return to the helm as Bangladesh won by an innings and 47 runs.He had resigned from the captaincy in June after Bangladesh’s series against Sri Lanka. It was a difficult time for Shanto, who was said to have felt slighted by the BCB, who didn’t contact him before naming a new ODI captain. Shanto had also said at the time that he didn’t believe three separate captains would serve the dressing room well. BCB president Aminul Islam convinced Shanto to return as the Test captain recently, and his first innings back was an aggressive, chanceless century.Related

“I think this is just a good start, nothing more than that,” he said after the Test. “I have always enjoyed thinking as a batter even when I am a captain. I try to contribute as a batter, but then when I am in the field, I take my responsibility as the captain.”Shanto revealed that the first few days after leaving the Test captaincy were hard to deal with, but that he recovered well and ended up enjoying the “non-captaincy” period.”To be very honest, the early days were tough,” he said. “I did feel relaxed afterwards. I enjoyed the whole time. I spent a lot of time with my family. I also developed my skills both technically and mentally.”Mahmudul Hasan Joy scored a big century in his first innings back in the Test side•BCB

Bangladesh also had a big contribution from Mahmudul Hasan Joy, whose 171 in the first innings is the team’s second-highest score by an opener. Mahmudul returned to the side after being dropped when he went through a lean phase.Shanto was happy to see Mahmudul back and among the runs, and also said he was keen to see more of debutant left-arm spinner Hasan Murad, who took six wickets in the match, including four in the second innings.”Murad was outstanding,” Shanto said. “He has waited for this opportunity for a long time. He has performed in first-class cricket in every season. He has great numbers. His patience is exemplary. It was great to see. I wish he can continue to improve slowly.”Joy wasn’t in the team. He has improved himself to come back with a big century in his first innings back in the team. His comeback is a positive thing. I think Joy has improved with the mental side of things. I hope he continues to play with this mentality.”

'It's coming home!' – England fans thrilled after 'easy' World Cup draw as Thomas Tuchel's men aim to finally end 60 years of hurt

The Three Lions have been drawn in Group L for the 2026 World Cup and the draw has served up some lively-looking reunions when the tournament gets underway in America, Canada and Mexico next June. Boss Thomas Tuchel has called it a "difficult" group, but fans have taken to social media to crow over how easy the ride will be for England in the opening stage of football's most coveted prize.

England discover path to World Cup glory

England will clash with Croatia in their opener, offering a chance for revenge after the painful 2018 semi-final loss. Also in the group are the Black Stars of Ghana, a talented side who promise a physical battle with lots of familiar players from the Premier League, and tournament minnows Panama, who England famously thrashed 6-1 in 2018.

Elsewhere, Scotland were handed plum ties against five-times World Cup winners Brazil and 2022 semi-finalists Morocco, in a mouthwatering repeat of their 1998 draw, sparking a wave of anticipation and a challenge that manager Steve Clarke called "fantastic". The Scots have also been drawn against Haiti and face an uphill battle to progress to the knockout phase for the first time in their history, but England fans are very confident of easing into the business end of the tournament.

Three Lions fans queued up to have their say after the group was confirmed and @Rees_wba posted to X, saying: "Easy as you like, it's coming home 🏆"

Elsewhere, @5eanOConnor added: "Relatively easy group. Croatia might be the only stumbling block, but they aren’t the force they once were. It’s the knockout phase that counts."

And @sherratt1876 said: "Nine points. The question is, who will come 2nd in the group behind England."

The votes of confidence kept on coming as @ace_man2574 observed: "Good Group, not like other years where is easy on group stage and then Knockout we are unable to cope with the top teams due to pressure."

And @billielaing1 said: "We should top that group. Excited for next June."

Tuchel: 'We will be well prepared when we arrive'

After the draw in Washington DC, Tuchel told reporters: "It’s a difficult group, a difficult opener. Croatia and Ghana are two regulars in World Cups and are two proud and strong nations. Croatia were the highest-ranked team from pot two and Ghana is always full of talent and can always surprise and have a big history in World Cup football. And Panama will try to make the most in their underdog role. No one can be underestimated, everyone deserves the fullest respect and we can show that."

He added: "For me, I’ve only experienced group football in Champions League formats and the way to approach it was to always give it the biggest respect and to put all the focus into winning the group. It always seems difficult, like our group now, but we are confident and we will be well prepared when we arrive."

AFPEngland await match locations

The draw is complete, but the specific match dates, venues, and kick-off times are being announced by FIFA in a special program on Saturday. The opening match will be on June 11th in Mexico City, and the final will be on July 19th in New Jersey. And it will be a very different tournament this time round as it will feature a new, expanded format with 48 teams and nations have been divided into 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to a new Round of 32 knockout stage. This increases the total matches from 64 to a whopping 104, and the champions this time round will play eight matches instead of seven.

Man City women's player ratings vs Aston Villa: Khadija Shaw brings up a century of goals with brilliant quadrupe and Vivianne Miedema impresses as WSL leaders earn commanding win

Khadija Shaw surpassed a century of goals for Manchester City as she scored four times to inspire her side to their 10th successive Women’s Super League victory in a thumping 6-1 win over Aston Villa. The Jamaica international took her tally to 103 goals in just 120 appearances in all competitions for the Cityzens, who are now six points clear at the top of the league table.

With both teams taking to the field for their final league fixture of 2025, it was Villa who started the better as Rachel Daly threatened to connect with the in-form Kirsty Hanson’s low cross, but the captain narrowly missed the ball as she slid into the six-yard box.

However, City were soon able to bypass the visitors’ impressive high press, taking the lead when Shaw converted Vivianne Miedema’s first-time cross for her 100th goal. And the 28-year-old scored her 101st just moments later when she raced into the penalty area, before cutting onto her favoured right foot to find the far corner.

Showing no signs of complacency in the second half, City pushed hard for a third and they thought they had it when Miedema bundled home after Shaw hit the woodwork, but the goal was chalked off after Kerstin Casparij was adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.

However, the Blues eventually made it 3-0 when Netherlands international Miedema’s wonderful through ball found Aoba Fujino, who was emphatic with her finish past Villa goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo. So often a threat on the road, having drawn at Arsenal and won at Manchester United, Natalia Arroyo's Villans were rewarded for their consistent pressure when defender Lucy Parker headed home from substitute Missy Bo Kearns’ corner.

But City – who were able to bring on captain Alex Greenwood for her first appearance since October – soon restored their three-goal cushion when Miedema capped off a brilliant performance with a goal – the forward tapping home from Fujino’s neat cross. And for the icing on the cake, Shaw then scored her third and fourth goals of the afternoon as Andree Jeglertz's side secured their 13th straight victory in all competitions. They will now finish the year six points ahead of second-placed Chelsea and eight clear of third-placed Arsenal.

    Attack

    Aoba Fujino (8/10):

    Vivianne Miedema (9/10):

Displaying plenty of guile between the lines, the WSL's all-time top goalscorer showcased her all-round game by recording assists for Shaw and Fujino, before netting herself.

    Lauren Hemp (7/10):

The scourge of Villa, having previously scored seven WSL goals against them, the winger registered the pre-assist in the build up to Shaw's opener.

    Khadija Shaw (10/10):

Reaching and then surpassing a century of goals in City colours, the striker was simply remarkable inside the penalty area. She has now scored 12 WSL goals in just 11 games this term.

    Subs & Manager

    Alex Greenwood (6/10):

Returning to the City fold for the first time since October following a period on the sidelines, the captain helped her side see out their victory.

    Grace Clinton (6/10):

Replacing Laura Blindkilde Brown after the hour mark, the midfielder thought she scored City's sixth, but it actually deflected in off player-of-the-match Shaw.

    Kerolin (5/10):

A second-half substitute, the winger replaced Lauren Hemp and was unable to make an impact on the match.

    Iman Beney (N/A):

Emerging from the bench late on, the Switzerland international was not on the pitch long enough to influence things.

    Sydney Lohmann (N/A):

Like Iman Beney, she didn't receive enough minutes in order to star.

    Andree Jeglertz (8/10):

In what felt like a key moment in the game, considering Villa were spirited in the opening 45 minutes, the manager got his half-time team talk spot on as City were ruthless in the second half.

Yankees Rumored to Be Interested in Potential Reunion With Veteran Relief Pitcher

Yankees GM Brian Cashman has expressed his desire to be aggressive at this year's trade deadline in hopes of shoring up whatever roster needs the team has before the second half of the season.

One area that's expected to be addressed is the bullpen, as Yankees relievers have struggled mightily of late. A name that's come up as a potential target for New York, and one who isn't even currently pitching in MLB, is veteran reliever David Robertson, a pitcher with whom the fan base is plenty familiar. Robertson was linked to the Yankees as a possible mid-season acquisition by 's Will Sammon on Tuesday.

Robertson last pitched in 2024 for the Rangers. He made 68 relief appearances and maintained a 3.00 ERA with 99 strikeouts in 72 innings. His 2.65 FIP suggests his underlying numbers were even better than what the stats show, yet he remains unsigned through the first four months of the '25 campaign.

Robertson has already spent two separate stints with the Yankees, who drafted him in the 17th round in 2006. His first stint in New York ran from 2008 to '14, and his second was from 2017 to '18. He made a total of 501 appearances for the Yankees and had a 2.75 ERA for the team.

Savannah Bananas Mimic Saquon Barkley's Famous Backwards Hurdle While in Philly

No matter where they decide to stop off on their baseball-playing tour around the U.S., the Savannah Bananas always put on a show. This weekend in Philadelphia, Pa., that was no different.

While delivering a pitch to the Texas Tailgaters on Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park, Bananas infielders Correlle Prime and DR Meadows decided to pay homage to Eagles running back Saquon Barkley by mimicking the signature backwards hurdle that he pulled off this past season against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Take a look:

Meadows unfortunately plunked the Tailgaters batter and allowed him to reach first base. Thankfully, these exhibition games are all in good fun.

As for Barkley, his hurdle has taken on a life of its own—first becoming the cover photo for the upcoming video game, and now being portrayed by one of the country's most famous baseball teams.

It'll be fascinating to see if he tries to pull it off again in 2025.
