Surrey 407 for 3 (Sibley 169*, Curran 108, Lawrence 58*) vs DurhamDom Sibley and Sam Curran scored excellent centuries as champions Surrey made Durham rue their decision to field first on day one at the Kia Oval.Sibley’s batted all day for his unbeaten 169, his third century of the campaign, while Curran’s 108 from 117 balls was his first Championship ton of the season. The duo added 170 for the third wicket as the hosts piled up 407 for 3.Prior to their mammoth stand Rory Burns lit up the morning’s play with a half century full of trademark shots and laced with 12 fours and Dan Lawrence (58*) too passed 50 at better than a run a ball before stumps were drawn.Durham were without the services of Ben Raine from early afternoon and there was a nasty moment for England quick Matthew Potts, who collided with the advertising boards in stopping a boundary shortly before lunch. He didn’t appear at the start of the afternoon session but returned to bowl later, seemingly without issue.Shorn of the services of Brydon Carse, Mark Wood and Codi Yusuf, Durham nevertheless followed the accepted practice of bowling first at the Oval even with the Kookaburra ball in play.Burns soon caused them to question the wisdom of that decision, producing his full repertoire of strokes. Durham aided this process, guilty of bowling either short and wide to feed the cut shot or drifting onto the pads whereupon the former England opener would drive them through mid-on and mid-wicket.There was the odd cover-drive too, all of which meant Burns was not required to exert himself with too much running on a hot day. His 12th four raised his 50, at which point he’s scored only three aside from his boundaries.A loose stroke brought his downfall shortly before lunch and when Ryan Patel went cheaply soon after the resumption there seemed a tiny window of opportunity for the visitors. However, Raine (1 for 32) left the field in the wake of taking the wicket and Curran and Sibley soon slammed that window shut again.Curran bristled aggression from the start, taking a particular liking to the spin of George Drissell, clouting his first ball, a full toss back, over the bowler’s head and later muscling him over the ropes for six.Against seam he was ruthless given any width, his first 50 coming in only 48 balls. Only a tight spell from Will Rhodes dragged him back below a run a ball, but his sparkling hundred containing a six and 14 fours was completed soon after tea before Drissell gained a measure of recompense by having him caught in the deep.Sibley, who edged short of wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson on four in the second over of the day, was content to play second fiddle, though he did unfurl three boundaries in one Jimmy Neesham over, the former New Zealand Test bowler pressed into service with a red ball for the first time in three years.A lovely pull shot was among eight fours in his first fifty and while there were only two more on route to 100, reached in 238 balls, he was a man transformed thereafter. Two short-pitched balls were expertly guided to the fence at third, while a punch through mid-wicket, his 19th four in all took him past 150.A ramp shot and a drive on the up came out in the death throes of the day as he dominated a stand of 131 with Dan Lawrence, who in turn scored his 1000th run for Surrey as the 400 was raised shortly before the close.

Magical Mitchell turns lost cause into a win for Texas Super Kings

MI New York fell three runs short in an MLC 2025 contest of major twists and turns

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jun-2025If Finn Allen’s record-breaking 51-ball 151 made the opening game of MLC 2025 memorable, the second of the season matched it for excitement, with two teams – whose better-known siblings have waged many battles at the IPL – playing out a thriller that had as many twists and turns as a 40-over contest can possibly have.Chasing 186 for victory against Texas Super Kings, MI New York looked out of the contest, then roared right back, then lost their way, found it again, but then stopped three runs short as Daryl Mitchell, who had triggered the previous turning point in the game, bowled a last over of yorkers and slower deliveries to concede just five to the ninth-wicket pair of Tajinder Singh and Naveen-ul-Haq.It was a special comeback from TSK, as they turned the result their way despite MINY needing 27 from 20 balls with six wickets in hand.Monank Patel made a 33-ball fifty•Sportzpics for MLCThe chase had started direly for MINY with the with the scoreboard reading 32 for 3 after the powerplay. It wasn’t a huge chase, but you wouldn’t want to lose Quinton de Kock and Nicholas Pooran, as well as Agni Chopra, that soon. But that is what happened thanks to Adam Milne and Noor Ahmad. The innings needed rebuilding, so Monank Patel, the No. 3, and Michael Bracewell, possibly MINY’s best bowler earlier, took it upon themselves to do that. They needed to steady the ship first, which they did, only one four – hit by Bracewell – came between Pooran’s dismissal and the end of the seventh over. But then a little impetus was needed, which came as they scored 11, 16, 15, 14 and 17 in the next five overs. And suddenly it was even stevens – 76 needed from 48.Monank had gotten to his half-century, off 33 balls, by then, and Bracewell looked good to join him at the mark, but Milne’s reintroduction provided the next twist in the tale, though it really was Faf du Plessis’ wicket more than anyone else’s. Milne bowled short outside off, Bracewell gave it a thwack, du Plessis leapt and plucked the ball out of the air one-handed at wide mid-off.

If that had a whiff of a turning point, the real one came a few overs later. Kieron Pollard, 38 and replaced as team captain by Pooran, went 4, 6, 4 and 4 against the gentle medium pace of Mitchell to make it 27 needed from 20. Till Mitchell’s sprint to midwicket, pick-up-turn-and-throw-the-stumps-down play sent both Pollard and Monank back off successive deliveries. That was the proper turning point. Only three fours came in the last three overs, two more wickets fell, and Mitchell’s last over, where just one big hit could have finished off the game, had just three runs off the bat, plus a bye and a leg-bye.Devon Conway scored a steady half-century•Sportzpics for MLCEarlier, till the halfway stage of the Super Kings innings, it didn’t look like they would get anywhere near a strong total. Sure, Devon Conway was around, on 36, but he had taken 26 balls to get there. And three wickets had fallen at the other end. That became five by the end of the 12th over, and Conway was still only on 38 from 28.Which is when things started to change. Calvin Savage, the one-time South Africa Under-19 man and now a USA player, joined Conway and showed his skills with the bat. The 13th over began with a four from Savage off Bracewell, who had picked up two of the five wickets to fall at that stage, and Conway struck the fourth six of his innings two balls later. It wasn’t frenetic, but by the end of the 16th, Super Kings had 140 on the board.Sixes seemed easier to come by than fours as Conway and Savage helped themselves to quite a few, and the partnership reached 79 before Conway, who got his half-century off 35 balls, was run-out for a 44-ball 66. Savage got to his fifty before time ran out, too, ending unbeaten on a 34-ball 53. Between them, the two hit nine sixes. Super Kings scored 110 runs in boundaries. MINY scored 114. Both innings had a dot-ball percentage of 33. Almost nothing to separate them but holding your nerve and winning the key moments.

Arsenal monster is quickly usurping Eze & Odegaard as Arteta's best creator

In stark contrast to this time last international break, the mood around Arsenal is incredibly positive.

Mikel Arteta’s side are unbeaten in the Champions League, and more importantly than that, sit atop the Premier League table a point clear of Liverpool.

Moreover, it’s not as if the Gunners have ground their way to the top, as they have not only conceded fewer goals but also scored one more than the Reds.

Mikel Arteta has his side playing fun, exciting football. Yet, even though you might expect Martin Odegaard or Eberechi Eze to be their most creative players, it’s someone else who holds that title at the moment – someone far more surprising.

Odegaard vs Eze last season

Before getting to the player currently leading the team in a creative sense this season, it’s worth looking back at how the club’s chief creators got on last year.

Eze was still plying his trade with Crystal Palace at the time, and ended up having the season of his life, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists in 43 appearances.

In contrast, Odegaard was only able to amass a tally of six goals and 12 assists in 45 appearances for the Gunners, in a season in which some in the fan base felt like he underachieved.

However, when taking a look at their underlying numbers from last season, which midfielder ends up looking like the better creator?

Well, it might come as something of a surprise to many, given the way their respective campaigns were viewed, but when it comes to purely creative metrics, it’s the Norwegian who came out on top last year.

For example, across all competitions, he performed better in various aspects, including progressive passes and carries, expected assists, passes into the penalty area, key passes, and more, all per 90.

Now, there are likely a couple of reasons why he performed so much better than the Englishman, such as the team they both played for and the fact that that Oliver Glasner relied on his former star to be more of a goalscorer. However, these numbers still prove Odegaard is a creative tour de force.

With all that said, neither he nor Eze top the list of creative Arsenal players this season.

Arsenal's most creative player this season

So, with Eze and Odegaard already out of the running, you might have expected Bukayo Saka to be Arsenal’s most creative player this season, or maybe even Noni Madueke before he went down injured.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, you’d once again be wrong. Moreover, even though Declan Rice tops the list for chances created in the Premier League, that is primarily down to his set-pieces.

With all that said, who has been Arteta’s chief creator this season?

Surprisingly, it’s been Jurrien Timber, who, according to Squawka, has created the most chances from open play in the entire team this season, clocking up eight chances at the time of writing.

The Gunners’ “game-changing signing,” as dubbed by respected analyst Ben Mattinson, has been exactly that so far this season, marrying his most monstrous defensive displays with this newfound creativity.

Perhaps the best display of this came in the game against Newcastle United, as he not only kept the Toon quiet on his side of the pitch but also continuously got forward to help create chances for his team.

It’s not just the eye test where the Dutchman impresses, though, as his underlying numbers really help to demonstrate just how complete he is as a player.

Ultimately, even though he doesn’t get quite as much attention as some of the other stars in the team, Timber is undoubtedly one of Arsenal’s most important and now creative players.

Premier League headline predictions: Man Utd emerge as dark horses for the title while one-man team Man City are exposed

With the title race having already swung back and forth while the top-four and relegation battles are as open as they have been for a few years, the Premier League is becoming increasingly difficult to predict. Sure, the odd match still follows the formbook, but a number of teams are proving tough to pin down and figure out what to expect from them on a game-to-game basis.

As such, knowing what shape the news cycle is going to take is anyone's guess at the start of a round of fixtures. Refereeing controversies, outrageous managerial quotes and even the reactions of big-name pundits can drive the narrative around the English top-flight, and thus it's difficult to figure out what will be dominating the newspaper back pages, website homepages and fan reaction shows in the hours and days that follow.

That hasn't stopped us at GOAL from trying, though. Rather than merely predicting the weekend's results, we have looked into our crystal balls to figure out what headlines you, the fans, will be reading and clicking on as you digest the latest Premier League action…

'Man Utd emerge as title dark horses after breezing past Brighton'

Manchester United's first win over Liverpool at Anfield for nine years was the turning point in Ruben Amorim's reign. Not only did the Portuguese coach handily outfox Arne Slot in the tactical stakes, he also finally ended his wait for back-to-back victories as United manager, and you could feel the confidence surging through the Red Devils' squad.

It has so often been one step forward, two steps back for Amorim, but Brighton won't have enough to halt his team's momentum at Old Trafford on Saturday. With new goalkeeper Senne Lammens bringing a sense of stability to a defence that had been lacking for so long and feeding long balls to the frontline, United finally have a recipe for success.

Whether Mason Mount starts as a false nine again or Benjamin Sesko gets the nod upfront, the Red Devils will have too much firepower from the second balls for Brighton to cope with. A third successive win and a clean sheet are on the cards, which could put United into the top six. With no European football commitments and all the players now fully up to speed with Amorim's system, they should then be considered dark horses for the title, and 'The United Strand' will soon be able to take a hair clipper to his out-of-control afro.

'Salah blows last chance as Liverpool are stung by the Bees'

Liverpool snapped a four-game losing streak by thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday as Slot was rewarded for making some bold changes. That included dropping struggling club legend Mohamed Salah to the bench and shifting to a 4-4-2 formation, which made the Reds both more solid at the back and more potent going forward.

But Brentford will bring the reigning champions crashing back down to earth at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. Despite Salah being on a run of seven Premier League matches without a non-penalty goal, Slot is liable to give the Egyptian one final chance to rediscover his best form, which will mean reverting to a 4-2-3-1 and leaving Liverpool exposed on the right flank again.

The likes of Kevin Schade and Igor Thiago could subsequently have a field day. The Bees have looked very strong at home, beating Aston Villa and Manchester United while drawing with Chelsea, and Liverpool will be their next victims. This game could mark the end of the Reds' title defence and ensure that Salah is relegated to a place among the substitutes for the foreseeable future.

'Villa expose Man City's flaws as Haaland kept on a leash'

"I don’t think they’re a top team at the moment. They’re still in the title race because of [Erling] Haaland," former Arsenal star Paul Merson said on when assessing Manchester City's 2-0 victory over Everton last week. "But you take Haaland out of the equation and then I’d struggle to think they would get in the top four."

Indeed, the Norwegian terminator's haul of 11 Premier League goals accounts for 65 percent of the 17 City have scored so far in 2025-26. Their second-highest scorer is Maxime Esteve, who gave up two own goals when Burnley went down 5-1 to Pep Guardiola's side at the Etihad. That is conclusive evidence that City are a one-man team, which makes their current form unsustainable.

The flaws in City's set-up will be exposed when they travel to the West Midlands to face an Aston Villa side brimming with confidence after back-to-back league wins. If Villa can put a leash on Haaland, as they did to Mathys Tel and Xavi Simons when picking up a 2-1 victory at Tottenham last time, it could even be an easy day's work for Unai Emery's men. They should be able to overrun City in midfield, allowing the likes of Ollie Watkins, Donyell Malen and Morgan Rogers to wreak havoc upfront.

Guardiola may have to reassess his aims for the campaign after this one.

'Arsenal lay down another marker with easy Palace win'

Arsenal continued their ominous run of form by putting four goals past Atletico Madrid without reply in the Champions League on Tuesday, and a seventh consecutive win is inevitable when Crystal Palace arrive at the Emirates. Oliver Glasner's Eagles are a match for any side at their best, but they'll only be at 50 per cent again after their Thursday night exertions in the Conference League.

Palace followed up their last European outing with a 2-1 loss at Everton, and Arsenal will be next to exploit their tired legs. Bukayo Saka hasn't scored from open play since matchday two, but he could boost his numbers significantly here, with a battle against Tyrick Mitchell threatening to be a complete mismatch.

After doing a job on Julian Alvarez, Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba should have no trouble with Jean-Philippe Mateta either. David Raya will be celebrating his ninth shut-out of the season in all competitions come full-time, and Arsenal will be six points clear of the chasing park after laying down another title marker.

+ Veja tabela do Campeonato Brasileiro-2023 clicando aqui

Potts takes five as Durham trounce Yorkshire

England seamer Matthew Potts excelled with a superb T20 career-best five for 17 as dominant Durham ran through Yorkshire en-route to a six-wicket Vitality Blast victory at York Cricket Club.Potts, who made his T20I debut for England against West Indies earlier this month, was destroyer in chief on a helpful Clifton Park pitch as the White Rose, inserted, were bowled out for 128 in 19 overs. James Wharton top-scored with 26.But Durham’s batters were far more commanding and dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s on a fourth North Group win in six games in 18 overs of their chase, with captain Alex Lees hitting the contest’s only six in a season’s best 62 off 46 balls. While Durham are second in the table, Yorkshire have now reached the halfway stage in their campaign having won two and lost five and are second-bottom.Durham made an ideal start as Zak Foulkes trapped Dawid Malan lbw for a golden duck at the end of the first over and Callum Parkinson’s left-arm spin forced Jonny Bairstow to miscue to mid-off for four at the end of the second. And when Adam Lyth, on 18, hoisted Parkinson out to deep midwicket midway through the fourth over, Yorkshire were reeling at 28 for three.Bairstow, schooled in the Minster City, was playing his first Blast game of 2025 following IPL duty and a subsequent calf injury, and it came on the ground where he played club cricket as a junior.Further damage came in the eighth over as Potts made the perfect start to his fantastic four-over burst when he trapped Will Luxton lbw and, two balls later, had a tentative Will Sutherland caught at slip, leaving Yorkshire 55 for five.Wharton pulled the same bowler out to deep backward square-leg shortly afterwards before a career best return was achieved when Dom Bess was lbw playing to leg.Nathan Sowter struck before Jordan Thompson was another lbw victim for Potts, his fifth wicket, as he tried to whip a full toss to leg on 19.That left Yorkshire 100 for nine after 16 overs, the majority of the 4,500 sellout having just cheered ironically when their side reached three figures.New Zealand fast bowler Will O’Rourke and Jack White then shared 28, the highest partnership of the innings, and recorded career best scores of 21 not out and 13 respectively as Yorkshire gave themselves a glimmer of hope.White, batting for the first time in this format, was bowled by Ben Raine to wrap things up, though 52 runs were added for the last two wickets.White then had Graham Clark caught at cover on the cut – 8 for one in the third over of Durham’s chase. But, in truth, the visitors advanced comfortably thanks to their captain, who held things together with a cautious rather than carefree innings.Spinners Jafer Chohan and Bess removed Ollie Robinson, 21, and Colin Ackermann as the score reached 63 for three after 10 overs. But opener Lees reached 50 off 39 balls, and he shared a stand of 60 another ex-Yorkshire player, Will Rhodes, 31 not out.Lees miscued Thompson’s seam to mid-off late on, but it didn’t matter.

'Check his DNA!' – Liam Delap set to make Chelsea return after injury but Enzo Maresca doubts striker has inherited throw-in gene from father Rory

Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Liam Delap has recovered from his injury and could be in Chelsea's matchday squad for their Carabao Cup fixture against Wolves on Wednesday. The Blues boss also jokingly expressed doubt over whether the English striker could take long throw-ins like his father and former Premier League star, Rory.

Maresca's pointed comments on teams using long throw-ins

Ahead of Chelsea's shock 2-1 defeat at home against Sunderland in the Premier League last weekend, Maresca opened up on his team's vulnerability when it comes to defending long throw-ins. The Italian coach had explained why he does not prefer to deploy such tactics himself, as he told reporters: "Knowing that at this moment most teams in the Premier League – but also in other leagues – are using long throws, we try to find solutions and learn how we can deal with that. It’s difficult. Most of the long throws go inside the six-yard box, so it’s complicated. We have reviewed the goal Brentford scored against us not only this week, because we are playing Sunderland, but other teams we faced after Brentford who use a long throw.

"If we don’t do it, it’s probably because I don’t like it, but you need to evolve in football, so probably one day I will do it. In this moment, we don’t plan to play with throw-ins, but it’s a matter of evolution and probably one day we will. If clubs do it, it’s because they think it’s good to do. Long throw-ins now are more or less like ten or 15 years in England – and Liam’s dad was the king of long throw-ins! In case we decide to go for long throw-ins, we will take out Liam and bring on his dad."

Chelsea conceded to a long Sunderland throw and this led to Maresca commenting: "It is always difficult to just bring seven or eight players inside the box. Almost inside the six-yard box. It is difficult to deal with that. We tried to prepare that but it can happen."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportChelsea asked to check 'Delap's DNA'

At a press conference on Tuesday, Maresca was asked to clarify these comments and whether the club would need to check Delap's 'DNA' to see if he could take long throws the same way his father, Rory, did. "No, I said many times that as a human being you can say something, but then you have a million people that can interpret it in a different way," Maresca replied. And what I can control is what I say. What I cannot control is the mind of people, how they can interpret it. I said that in this moment we are not looking for a long throw-in. Because I'm a manager, I love to evolve. Probably one day I will use that. These are my words.

"Now if people interpret it in the wrong way, I cannot control. I'm not here to control what people think. So I didn't ask Liam about a long throw-in. But again, not tomorrow. Probably one day we're going to ask Liam. I also said that we can swap Liam with this guy [Rory]."

Injury boost for Chelsea as striker returns

Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town in the summer, picked up an injury in just the third match of the 2025-26 campaign as he limped off in the first half of the Blues' 2-0 win over Fulham on August 30. Since then, the striker has remained sidelined but is now on his way to return to action for the English giants.

Speaking on Delap's latest condition, Maresca said: "Yes, he took part in a complete lead session yesterday and is available for tomorrow. No, 90 minutes, no. It's I think two months now that he's out, so he needs gradually back to 100%."

Getty Images SportMaresca likely to rotate squad against Wolves

Keeping in mind the hectic schedule until the November international break, Maresca might consider rotating his squad against a struggling Wolves side – who are yet to win a game in the Premier League – in their Carabao Cup fourth round tie. After the cup fixture, the Blues face Tottenham Hotspur in a difficult Premier League clash away from home on November 1. Before the international break, they play two further games, one against Qarabag FK in the Champions League and a home fixture in the league against Wolves.

Not just Elanga: Howe must drop Newcastle star who only won 40% duels

Newcastle United eased some of the concerns surrounding their early-season form with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

For Eddie Howe, it was an important three points, but the performance also highlighted ongoing areas for improvement.

The Magpies have had a mixed start to the campaign.

While their Champions League adventure produced a resounding 4-0 victory over Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise last week, the Premier League has been more testing.

Before the Forest clash, Newcastle were near the bottom of the table in expected goals created, their attack lacking sharpness despite the arrival of high-profile summer signings such as Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

Sunday’s victory, alongside the midweek European triumph, suggested signs of improvement.

Howe’s side have now scored six without reply across their last two matches, showing greater cohesion in both attack and defence.

Importantly, these results came despite a growing injury list.

Full-backs Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall are both facing extended spells on the sidelines, Wissa is yet to even train for the club, and Ramsey is only just nearing a return.

Squad depth will be vital if Newcastle are to juggle the demands of domestic and European competition.

Newcastle's performance vs Forest in numbers

The win over Nottingham Forest was, in many respects, Newcastle’s most complete attacking performance of the Premier League season so far.

The Magpies generated an expected goals tally of 3.28 – their highest in a single match this campaign – and created six big chances while taking 18 shots. On another day, the margin of victory could have been far greater.

Bruno Guimarães was the standout performer.

Wearing the captain’s armband, the Brazilian midfielder dictated the tempo and constantly found space to progress play.

He scored a wonderful curling strike from outside the area in the 58th minute to break the deadlock and later won the penalty, courtesy of a foul by former Newcastle player Elliot Anderson, that Woltemade converted to seal the points.

Guimarães’ match rating, via Sofascore, of 9.4 reflected his dominance.

Elsewhere, however, not everything clicked – Newcastle’s wingers continue to underwhelm.

Both Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga found it difficult to impose themselves, struggling to provide consistent service into the box. The latter walked from the field after 70 minutes having delivered just one accurate cross from nine attempts. He also only won three of his 12 duels.

Howe will be concerned by their lack of productivity, especially given the volume of chances wasted.

The positives outweighed the negatives on this occasion, but the game underlined that Newcastle are still searching for fluency in certain areas of the pitch.

Joelinton's struggles vs Forest

One of the more disappointing displays came from Joelinton.

The Brazilian midfielder has become a divisive figure within the Newcastle fanbase, admired for his physicality and work rate but also criticised for his inconsistency.

Against Forest, like Elanga and Gordon, he struggled to impact the game in a positive way.

He registered 50 touches and attempted 35 passes, completing 32 of them with a strong 91% accuracy.

However, his influence largely stopped there. He failed to complete a single dribble, won only two of his seven ground duels, and missed a big chance in the first half.

His tendency to concede unnecessary fouls also stood out, with three infringements breaking up momentum and handing Forest opportunities to relieve pressure.

At times, Joelinton looked more focused on disrupting the opposition than building play.

He lost possession four times and rarely provided the driving runs that have made him such an effective marauding presence in midfield.

Substituted for Lewis Miley, his performance was a reminder that fatigue may be playing a role – with Newcastle now playing every few days due to Champions League and domestic cup commitments, he appears less able to sustain his usual high-intensity style.

For Howe, the return of Jacob Ramsey cannot come soon enough.

Jacob Ramsey for Newcastle

The England U21 international is expected to challenge directly for Joelinton’s spot, and his arrival could provide both competition and inspiration.

Joelinton has shown before that he can rise to the occasion when pushed; now, he may need that extra spark to rediscover his best form.

While there is plenty to work on, Newcastle’s recent results have helped ease the pressure that was beginning to mount.

Back-to-back wins, six goals scored, and two clean sheets point towards progress, even if performances are not yet polished.

Howe has weathered the early storm, but the weeks ahead will test just how deep and adaptable this Newcastle squad really is.

'I'm in a really happy relationship' – Lionesses hero Mary Earps reveals same-sex relationship as she opens up on sexuality for first time in new autobiography

Mary Earps has revealed she is in a same-sex relationship. The 32-year-old, who retired from international football earlier this year, was key as England secured Euros glory in 2022. Earps, who now plays for French side PSG having left Manchester United in 2024, revealed all in a statement to the BBC on Friday so that the revelation was shared on her own terms.

Earps has chosen to disclose details to the BBC ahead of the publication of her memoir, of which an extract can be read on The Guardian. The goalkeeper felt it better to share details of her sexuality so it doesn't distract from other themes in the book, which includes her struggles with mental health.

Her manager, Tina Taylor, said Earps hopes that by being open about her life will inspire others to have the 'confidence to live authentically'. "After the World Cup, the outpouring of love and support really showed Mary the impact she's had, and she was deeply touched by it," Taylor said.

"By sharing details of her life away from football – something she's never done before – Mary is telling her story in her own way. It's honest and authentic."

In a statement to the BBC, Earps said: "I've always tried to keep my personal life separate from my professional one, but it would have felt inauthentic not to include something so important to me in this book.

"I'm in a really happy relationship. The people closest to me have always known, and I feel ready and happy to share that with everyone else now."

In May 2024, she was handed an MBE by Prince William and spoke of the importance of being a "trailblazer" and a role model.

"I'm a very ambitious person, a very hard-working person, and I think to try and push boundaries and try and be a pioneer for change, in many ways, is something that I really enjoy doing, and hopefully I can do for the rest of my career," Earps said in an interview in August 2024.

"As Lionesses, one of the things that really sets us apart from other teams is how strong we are in our values and what we stand for."

In her autobiography 'All In', which is being serialised by The Guardian, Earps speaks candidly about Hannah Hampton and that "bad behaviour is being rewarded" when the rival goalkeeper was restored to the England squad for Euro 2022.

Earps says Hampton's "behaviour behind the scenes had frequently risked derailing training sessions and team resources" as England went the distance on home turf three years ago.

Earps played every game of Euro 2022 and the 2023 World Cup, while Hampton was a member of the England squad for both tournaments but dropped briefly following the tournament in England.

In an interview with The Guardian to accompany the serialisation, Earps said: "I think we had different ideas of what being a teammate should be. I think there was a mismatch, a misalignment, of values."

And when asked to elaborate on what the disruptive behaviour was, Earps replied: "I don’t want to go into the specifics because it’s not my place … She is a very good goalkeeper and I’ve tried to draw a line under all that. I have messaged her privately to say: ‘Look, no bad blood.’"

'It was harder to find that fight in me'

Hampton revealed earlier this year that a story about the reasoning why she was dropped from 2022 almost saw her quit football. "It was harder to find that fight in me to prove people wrong, but somehow I managed it," Hampton told in June.

"I had all my friends and my family around me at the time to guide me in the right direction
and keep me going. It’s worked out for
the best – I’ve got a lot to thank them for."

In April this year, England head coach Sarina Wiegman confirmed that Hampton was her first choice goalkeeper, which saw Earps dramatically retire from international football shortly before Euro 2025 in Switzerland.

England would go on to win the competition, beating Spain in the final 3-1 on penalties.
