Carberry and McKenzie put Hampshire in charge

Michael Carberry and Neil McKenzie scored centuries as Hampshire built an impressive first innings lead over Kent at the Rose Bowl

06-Jul-2010

ScorecardMichael Carberry and Neil McKenzie scored centuries as Hampshire built an impressive first innings lead over Kent at the Rose Bowl.Carberry, who made his first Test appearance against Bangladesh in March, reminded selectors of his quality by making 158 while South African Veteran McKenzie scored 113. In reply to Kent’s 251 made on the first day, Hampshire ended 153 ahead at 404 for 5 and the home side firmly in control. In contrast to the opening day, there was little in the pitch to encourage the Kent bowlers who were reduced in strength by Amjad Khan’s injury. As a result Kent Captain Robert Key used seven bowlers including the occasional spin of Martin van Jaarsveld.Hampshire lost only one wicket from the start of play when they were 51 for 2 until after tea when both centurions were dismissed. The only man to go was nightwatchman James Tomlinson who had made 11 when he guided Simon Cook to wicketkeeper Geraint Jones.Carberry and McKenzie dominated the Kent attack with McKenzie straight driving Malinga Bandara for the game’s first six on his way to his second century of his Hampshire career and his 35th in total.Hampshire were 312 for 3 at tea and with the Kent attack already looking the worse for wear after a long day in the field. But just when it seemed as though they might never be parted McKenzie got an outside edge to a delivery from Cook and gave James Hockley a catch at second slip.McKenzie hit 13 fours in an innings of 213 balls and his stand of 254 was the biggest by any Hampshire batsman against Kent. They beat international stars Gordon Greenidge and Barry Richards who put together an unbeaten 242 in 1973.Carberry did not last much longer but after hitting a season’s best 158 gave Robbie Joseph a wicket when he touched a delivery to wicketkeeper Jones. Carberry faced 261 bowls and hit 23 fours when he was fifth out but still there was no respite for the Kent bowlers.James Vince and Nick Pothas took Hampshire beyond the 400 mark before stumps to set up a strong chance of completing only their second LV= County Championship win of the season.

ScorecardA career-best innings of 184 by Chris Nash and some hostile bowling from Corey
Collymore and Yasir Arafat put Sussex in sight of their sixth win of the season
at the end of the second day of the County Championship clash with
Leicestershire at Grace Road.Nash, dropped on 59, made the hosts pay as he steered Sussex to a total of 379
and a first-innings lead of 175, despite Matthew Hoggard’s first five-wicket
haul since he joined Leicestershire from Yorkshire at the start of the season. Then Collymore and Arafat ripped through Leicestershire’s top order picking up
two wickets apiece before bad light and rain brought an early end to the day
with the home side struggling at 59 for 4, still 116 runs behind.Collymore trapped openers Will Jefferson and Paul Nixon lbw in his first three
overs before Arafat removed James Taylor and Andrew McDonald to leave
Leicestershire in disarray after a disappointing day with both bat and ball. The tone was set in the second over of the morning when Hoggard found the edge
as Nash looked to drive, only for Jefferson to spill the catch at second slip
with only seven runs added to the overnigh score of 128 for 4. It was to prove an expensive error as Nash and wicketkeeper Ben Brown, deputising for England man Matt Prior, put Sussex in command. They shared a stand of 109 in 31 overs for the sixth wicket following the early
departure of nightwatchman Lewis Hatchett who was bowled by Hoggard. Nash, who had gone past 50 only once before this season, reached his century with a square cut to the ropes off Wayne White. Brown provided solid support in the partnership, scoring 38 before being brilliantly caught at square leg by White off the bowling of left-arm spinner Claude Henderson shortly after lunch.Nash, however, continued to dominate and, joined by an equally aggressive
Arafat, punished some loose and wayward Leicestershire bowling. Even the new
ball, taken at 292 for 6, did not help the home side’s cause with Nash pulling
and cutting Nathan Buck for three fours and a six in his first over. The Sussex opener looked well set for the first double century of his career
until he spooned a catch to fine leg to give Hoggard his fifth wicket. Arafat continued to throw the bat, hitting five fours and three sixes in an entertaining knock of 58 and adding another 51 runs for the last wicket with
Collymore. Hoggard, easily Leicestershire’s best bowler, finished with five for 81 but Buck’s three wickets cost him 110 runs in 20 overs.Sussex wasted no time in pressing home their advantage with Arafat and
Collymore making serious inroads into the Leicestershire batting in the 11.4
overs possible before the weather brought an early finish. Arafat claimed 2 for 27 in six overs and Collymore took two for 21 in his four overs.

Washout hits Northants promotion hopes

12-Aug-2010

ScorecardNorthamptonshire’s promotion hopes were hit by rain which ruined a potentially intriguing final day of the match at Chesterfield. Derbyshire started the fourth morning needing another 322 for victory but a violent electrical storm halted play after only 35 minutes.Torrential rain left mini-lakes across the Queen’s Park outfield and it was three hours before the match could resume. Sterling work by the groundstaff allowed the umpires to take the players back out at 2.30pm but after 25 minutes, another downpour sent the players back to the pavilion for the last time.Umpires Jeff Evans and Richard Illingworth were left with no alternative but to call the game off shortly before 3.30pm with Derbyshire 76 for 0, leaving the home side to take nine points and Northants six.It was a soggy anticlimax to what promised to be an exciting day’s cricket, with both teams fancying their chances of forcing a win. Northants needed the points to stay in touch with the top two in Division Two while bottom-of-the-table Derbyshire were chasing a first victory since late April. It was a tough task for the home side but Derbyshire could take heart from the previous Championship match at Queen’s Park when, despite losing to Surrey by 42 runs, they scored 365 in the fourth innings.Although Northants have five bowlers out injured, there was enough in the pitch to suggest they could take 10 wickets in the day, although they had made their task harder by dropping Chris Rogers the previous evening. The Australian opener was likely to be a key figure in a successful run chase and he and Wayne Madsen had reduced the target by 22 in nine overs without any real alarms when the first storm broke over the tree-ringed ground. The lengthy hold-up meant 36 overs were lost and that almost certainly scuppered Derbyshire’s chances and left Northants needing to break through quickly. The bowlers were encouraged by the sight of one ball from Andrew Hall shooting through low while another from the Northants skipper lifted sharply at Madsen and lobbed to gully, where James Middlebrook spilled the catch running back.In the end, it had no impact on the visitors’ chances because, minutes later, dark clouds rolled back in and condemned the contest to a watery end.

Teams battle to retain focus

Big picture

It is just three weeks since these two sides last met at Lord’s in an encounter that will live in infamy whatever the result of investigations into allegations of spot-fixing in the fourth Test. A match that included a display of Mohammad Amir’s teenage brilliance and an equally eye-catching fightback from Stuart Broad and Jonathan Trott ended in an atmosphere of tense and eerie quiet as England sealed a joyless innings and 225-run thrashing. The tour continued despite Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt’s suspension and even after an easy win for England in the first one-dayer fans on both sides turned out in large numbers at Headingley and The Oval. They were treated to what were, arguably, the two most enthralling contests this summer as England went 2-0 up before a career-best effort from Umar Gul brought the visitors back from the brink of a series defeat. Now, Pakistan’s visit has been thrown into yet more turmoil with the news that the ICC is investigating the third ODI after it received information from a newspaper before the game began alleging that bookies were aware of certain scoring patterns that occurred during the match. While the ICC have been quick to point out that it would be premature to suggest anything untoward occurred during Pakistan’s 23-run win, the fans’ show of faith now appears depressingly naive. It had been hoped that Pakistan’s visit could finish on the positive note of a hard-fought contest, but the focus may well be elsewhere after the most recent allegations and the frustration and sadness in the England camp was evident ahead of the fourth match. Morale in Pakistan’s squad will also have been undermined and it will be a challenge to retain the momentum gleaned from Friday’s win. An autumnal Lord’s may well seem a bleak venue for what could have been an eagerly-anticipated clash.

Form guide (last five completed matches)

Pakistan WLLWLL

Watch out for…

Ian Bell is poised to return to international duty with England after being recalled to the one-day squad for the final two matches. Bell was been in prolific form for Warwickshire since returning from his metatarsal injury and though he might have hoped for more pleasant circumstances in which to cement his England spot, with a challenging winter ahead he will be looking to make the most of every opportunity.
Shahid Afridi showed glimpses that he was beginning to return to his destructive best at The Oval and if he can find form with the bat and rhythm with the ball he is dynamic and charismatic enough to be a dangerous player regardless of any off-field distractions. Afridi has so far managed to remain distanced from the allegations swirling around his team, and will still be looking to lead from the front.

Team news

Ravi Bopara’s return to England’s middle order has only been partially successful, and either he or Luke Wright could sit out if Paul Collingwood has recovered from the virus that kept him out of the third match and Bell slots back into the line-up.England (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Steve Davies (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ian Bell, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Michael Yardy, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James AndersonAn embattled Pakistan are likely to stick to the same starting XI, both because this unit was successful in the last match and to present a unified front as the storm surrounding the most recent round of allegations gathers force.Pakistan (probable) 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Fawad Alam, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Abdul Razzaq, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Shoaib Akhtar

Pitch and conditions

Saturday’s CB 40 Final, which was also a day/night affair, gave a good indication of what to expect at Lord’s. In a match dominated by the ball but won by a batsman, Imran Tahir’s returns were the most impressive. The seamers also found plenty in the pitch to keep them interested, however, and Bell’s knock highlighted the value of having someone to bat through most of the innings. Although temperatures are likely to be on the low side once again, rain shouldn’t be an issue.

Stats and Trivia

  • Bell’s performance against Somerset extended his domestic limited-overs tally this season to 554 runs at 61.55, including six fifties and Saturday’s fluent hundred. Bell has also been in decent nick in his limited Championship and he scored the only hundred of the match against Hampshire last week to secure Warwickshire’s spot in Division One.
  • Umar Gul clearly enjoys bowling at The Oval, and has taken 20 wickets at an average of 11.00 across three formats there. He is less enamored with Lord’s, where has 12 wickets in two Tests and three T20Is at 31.08.
  • Opinions are split over Fawad Alam’s success as a one-day player. While he has an impressive average of 45.00 that has been inflated by finishing not out eight times 18 innings in ODIs, and in matches where he has been dismissed his average dips to 27.60. His career strike-rate of 75.00 doesn’t suggest that he’s set the world alight, but in the ten ODIs he has played in in which Pakistan have won he averages 110.00, and so it appears he relishes the role of stabiliser and finisher in the middle order.

“They’ve been three very hard-fought cricket matches. There certainly seems to be passion on both sides, they’ve been high intensity affairs.”

After beating Queensland on Friday, the visitors were hoping for some more fine-tuning but the covers stayed on and the contest was called off without a ball being bowled.Any practice was limited to the SCG’s indoor nets and Muttiah Muralitharan and Kumar Sangakkara both had a light session. The tourists play New South Wales in a Twenty20 fixture on Wednesday before facing the Australians in a T20 international in Perth on Sunday. The three-match one-day series begins in Melbourne on November 3.

Vanuatu and Kuwait open with huge wins

A round-up from the opening day of action in the ICC World Cricket League Division 8 tournament in Kuwait

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Nov-2010The ICC World Cricket League Division 8 tournament began in Kuwait on Saturday and here is a round-up of the action from the first set of matches. And another: Bhutan collapsed for 55 after Vanuatu posted a massive total•International Cricket Council

Vanuatu inflicted an embarrassing 282-run defeat on Bhutan who crumbled for 55 in the face of Vanuatu’s huge 337 for 9. Captain Andrew Mansale led the with 87 off 81 balls, adding 154 alongside Jonathon Dunn (75), but it was the closing stages of the innings that provided the real fireworks. Patrick Matautaava swung his way to 79 from 43 deliveries including seven fours and four sixes and he wasn’t finished there as he then claimed 4 for 11 in Bhutan’s reply. None of the batsmen could muster double figures in an innings that lasted 23.1 overs.”It feels great to have been able to help the team to our first win of the tournament and to get my Man of the Match award from Tony Hill was pretty cool,” said Matautaava. “But this is only the first game of a long tournament.”In another clash that was the definition of one-sided, hosts Kuwait hammered Suriname by nine wickets and the entire contest lasted 36 overs. Kuwait were only chasing a paltry 77 and knocked off their target in 7.1 overs. The trouncing was set up by their opening bowlers, Mohammad Murad and Saad Khalid, who shared eight wickets. At 27 for 7 Suriname were also threatening not to have anyone reach double figures, but Terbhawan Ranjit (19) and Anthony Seeraj (12 not out) managed to edge the total to 76 which was boosted by 19 wides.”It was a dream start for us to begin the tournament with a victory but we can’t be complacent,” said captain Hisham Mirza. “Vanuatu are in our group and after their big win today, we need to make sure we’re prepared to face them tomorrow in Hubara. I couldn’t have hoped for a better start for us today and it was good to finish so early so we had time to relax ahead of tomorrow’s game where we hope we can also do well.”Germany produced an impressive comeback to beat Zambia by 11 runs after only posting 128. In reply, Zambia were well placed on 58 for 2 but Shakeel Hassan turned the match on its with an incisive spell where he took out the middle order and revived Germany’s hopes. Ehsan Latif then returned for a second burst, and carried on where Hassan left off with three scalps, to wrap up the innings as Zambia’s lower order couldn’t absorb the pressure despite the required rate never being an issue. Germany had struggled to form any sort of platform with the bat as they fell to 20 for 3, but Rishi Pillai made a vital 39 before Hassan contributed 20. Hassan’s key role was still to come.Bahamas put in an efficient display to ease past Gibraltar by seven wickets. Their captain Gregory Taylor led the chase with 74 and received solid support from the rest of the top order. Gibraltar had also put in a solid attempt with the bat but couldn’t take advantage of having wickets in hand at the death. Kieron Ferrary top-scored with 52 however, the strike-rates of the middle order were low.

Nathan Hauritz has sent a loud and clear message to the Australian selectors by bowling New South Wales to victory on the final day against Western Australia at the WACA. Hauritz collected 5 for 39 from 27 overs to help the Blues to their 199-run triumph, less than a fortnight after being axed from the Test side to make room for Xavier Doherty.Doherty has been retained for this Friday’s second Test in Adelaide but Hauritz has improved his chances of a recall at some point during the series, with excellent final-day work that earned him the Man of the Match prize. Western Australia were chasing 365 but hit trouble when Hauritz ran through the specialist batsmen, removing four of the top five.He began with Michael Swart caught at bat-pad for 39, before adding the opener Wes Robinson, who was caught at slip for a painstaking innings of 39 from 201 deliveries. Hauritz also collected the in-form Shaun Marsh, who was caught behind for 27, and Adam Voges also fell caught behind to Hauritz for 13, to leave the Warriors struggling at 5 for 136.The fast bowler Mark Cameron, who joined the side mid-match when Doug Bollinger was rushed off to Adelaide to bolster the Test squad, picked up 3 for 33 as the local lower order failed to offer much resistance. It was a good couple of days all round for the New South Wales Test hopefuls, after Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith both made half-centuries on the third day.The win has confirmed New South Wales as the competition leaders, with three victories from their five matches. Western Australia have not quite shown the improvement they would have hoped for under their new coach Mickey Arthur and are on the bottom of the table with one win from four games.

Pakistan concerned over FTP schedule

Pakistan have a packed schedule of commitments for 2011 but there remain concerns and reservations within the board in the long-term over ongoing Future Tours Programme (FTP) negotiations

Osman Samiuddin25-Dec-2010Pakistan have a packed schedule of commitments for 2011 but there remain concerns and reservations within the board in the long-term over ongoing Future Tours Programme (FTP) negotiations. Soon after the 2011 World Cup in April, Pakistan will tour the Caribbean for the first time in six years for a full series. They are then due to visit Zimbabwe in August and the year is rounded off by ‘home’ commitments with Sri Lanka and England, though in both cases, locations are yet to be decided.”As part of the FTP, England has committed to a full tour of three Tests, five ODIs and one T20 in January [2012].” the PCB’s chief operating officer Subhan Ahmed said. “But we havent decided on a venue yet. The UAE is one of the options at the moment. They have committed to it as part of the FTP.” Similarly, negotiations are ongoing with Sri Lanka for a series in October 2011 though the itinerary and venues have to be confirmed. But ESPNcricinfo understands that officials involved in the next FTP discussions, due to be unveiled in February 2011, hold “reservations” over Pakistan’s commitments in the next cycle. Concerns center mostly around contests with India, currently on hold due to a cooling in diplomatic ties between the two countries. The ICC has given Pakistan-India series icon status, similar to the Ashes, so that in one cycle of the FTP three bilateral series should be played between the sides as opposed to twice as happens between other, non-iconic contests. But there is a concern within the board that the ICC has not pushed enough for contests to resume; an India series remains cricket’s golden egg in financial termsIt is understood that feelers have been sent at state and diplomatic level to initiate cricket ties but in the near future, according to Ahmed, a full resumption is off the table.”If you look at our FTP for this year, we have such few slots between now and 2012 and where we have slots India is occupied,” Ahmed said. “So if an opportunity comes it won’t be a full-fledged tour, it might be in a small slot, a short tour. We are working with all boards on FTP negotiations, including India and wherever we see slots we can fill them in.”In fact, Pakistan’s commitments in the next year have put a number of potential series and tours on hold for now. Zimbabwe were due to visit in December for a series of fund-raising games – which would be the first visit by an international side since the Lahore attacks in March 2009 – but no suitable slot could be found; Ahmed said this month was a possibility but as it coincided with the Islamic month of Muharram, government advice was to push the tour to a later date. The ICC task force’s plan for a World XI visit to Pakistan, to potentially kickstart the return of international cricket to the country, also fell prey to a packed schedule.”Trying to bring international cricket back to Pakistan is an ongoing process of negotiations that we have with different boards,” Ahmed said. “But this process will be gradual. To change perceptions about security we will have to start with junior tours that will give confidence to other boards and only then can full-fledged tours begin. This process will be slow and a lot will depend on the security situation in Pakistan.”With this in mind, there is the prospect of a visit from a Bangladesh representative team at some point. “With Bangladesh we have initially discussed on a preliminary basis a junior level tour and hopefully something will materialise.”
