Utah Royals, USYNT forward Ally Sentnor named 2024 U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year

Sentnor joins the list of decorated U.S. soccer players to earn the prestigious Young Female Soccer Player of the Year award

It's day two of the U.S. women's national team January camp, and Ally Sentnor is focused on the task at hand: Compete and get the attention of Emma Hayes to earn a spot on the SheBelieves Cup roster for February.

However, a surprise was is store for the young attacking player: The U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year award. The Utah Royals striker and one of the most decorated talents in the USYNT program, earned the prestigious award – one that has honored some of the very best in U.S. Soccer history, from Jaedyn Shaw to Mallory Swanson, Lindsey Horan and Tobin Heath.

The award has been given since 1998, when Cindy Parlow was the first to ever win Young Female Player of the Year. Sentnor was humbled and extremely grateful, mentioning the long history of role models who have won the award.

USA TODAY SportsWHAT HAPPENED

Appropriately enough, the No. 1 pick at the 2024 NWSL Draft pick was voted 2024 U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year. Sentnor was also a nominee for NWSL Rookie of the Year, after a strong debut scoring three goals and chipping in four assists for the Utah Royals.

The Hanson, Massachusetts native has been a rising star in both the NWSL and on the international stage, scoring for the U.S. at almost every youth level. Acccording to U.S. Soccer, of the five finalists for this award, Sentnor earned 55.8% of the overall votes.

Sentnor had a standout performance at the Under-20 FIFA Women's World Cup, helping the Americans earn third place overall. Sentnor scored three times, and against Germany in the quarterfinal match, had one of the most dramatic tying goals that brought the USYNT back and pushed the game into overtime.

This match was known as one of the biggest comebacks in U.S. history, as the U20 USYNT was down 2-0 against Germany in the third minute of extra-time. In the 97th and 98th minute, a miracle performance took over the field and the Americans tied the match.

After the tournament, Sentnor was awarded the Bronze Ball, for third-best player in the tournament.

ImagnWHAT SENTNOR SAID

“The words that come to mind are grateful and humbled," Sentnor said in a statement. “To see the list of players who have won this before shows me the opportunities that are ahead. I know there is so much work to do for myself and my generation, but we’ve had amazing role models in the players from the past and the veteran players who are on the team now. I’m so excited about the next steps that Emma is taking with National Team and I’m going to work as hard as I can to try to earn more opportunities to be with this special group of players.”

"Aggressive" Rangers star takes major step to return from injury vs Lyon

Looking to make it two wins from two in the Europa League this season as they square off against Lyon, Rangers have been handed an early boost with one player now set to return from injury to feature against the French side.

Rangers injury news

To their credit, the Gers have finally found their form as of late, having initially endured a tough start to the season which featured a 3-0 thrashing courtesy of Old Firm rivals Celtic. Since that game, however, Philippe Clement’s side have been unbeaten in all competitions and extended that run last time out when they defeated Hibernian 1-0, courtesy of Tom Lawrence’s first-half effort.

Now, Clement’s attention must turn back towards the Europa League and arguably his side’s toughest test up against Ligue 1 Lyon. The French giants are no strangers to the European stage and enter the game with a point to prove after picking up just seven points from their first six Ligue 1 games so far this season.

The Gers have been handed quite the boost ahead of that challenge, however. As confirmed by Clement and relayed by Ibrox News, Mohamed Diomande is expected to feature against Lyon on Thursday following his return to training. The midfielder missed the game against Hibs, but has since made a swift return to put himself in contention once again.

Clement revealed the news, telling reporters: “Diomande will be back in the squad for tomorrow, Ridvan is back in training but will not be available.”

Mohamed Diomande

Of course, the bad news is that Ridvan Yilmaz is not yet ready to feature, but he is at least on his way and back in training with the rest of his teammates. He’ll be forced to watch on once again though, as Diomande makes his return.

"Aggressive" Diomande is a key man under Clement

Getting Diomande back fit and ready to feature after just one game on the sidelines should be seen as an impressive success by those at Ibrox, who will no doubt reap the rewards for his swift return. The 22-year-old started four of his side’s first five Scottish Premiership games prior to the game against Hibs, for which he was sidelined, to highlight just how important he can be for Rangers.

Diomande has unsurprisingly earned plenty of praise during his time at Ibrox so far, including from podcaster John Walker, who dubbed the midfielder’s press “aggressive” and a “diamond”.

No matter Lyon’s start to their campaign in France, if Rangers can secure all three points against the Ligue 1 side, then they’ll earn deserved plaudits. Victory would of course see them go two from two in this season’s Europa League.

Ashworth wants to beat Real Madrid to "underrated" ace Man Utd have scouted

Looking to get back among Europe’s elite both on and off the pitch, Manchester United now reportedly want to beat some European heavyweights in the race to sign an attacking reinforcement.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils had an impressive transfer window this summer. On paper, every one of their weaknesses was strengthened in some capacity. They welcomed Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui to solve their defensive issues, Manuel Ugarte to replace Casemiro, and Joshua Zirkzee to sharpen an otherwise blunt frontline. Yet, five games into their Premier League campaign, not much has changed.

Whilst some may believe that the summer transfer window was enough to see Manchester United take a large step towards returning to Europe’s elite, those at Old Trafford are seemingly only just getting started, with one attacking reinforcement reportedly eyed for 2025.

According to reports in Spain, sporting director Dan Ashworth now wants to beat Real Madrid and Liverpool in the race to sign Kevin Zenon for Manchester United in 2025. The Red Devils have reportedly scouted the Boca Juniors star, who has a low release clause amid the interest of several parties from around European football.

The special talent has become an integral part of United’s team.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Sep 28, 2024

Just 23 years old, Zenon would fit into the profile of players that INEOS want to focus their transfer strategy on, given that he is under 26 years old and a cheaper alternative to more established stars. The left-hand side is a position that is arguably up for grabs under Erik ten Hag following Marcus Rashford’s year-long struggle to find form, which could see Zenon steal a starting spot.

"Underrated" Zenon is ready for Man Utd move

Completing a move to Old Trafford is often one full of pressure – a pressure that several players have been crushed by. Zenon could now be next in a long line of attacking reinforcements to have his turn at boosting Ten Hag’s frontline once and for all. With that pressure, Manchester United could unearth a diamond, whom analyst Ben Mattinson previously dubbed “underrated”.

That said, the Argentine is yet to reach his full potential and is not a player who’d be making an instant impact at Old Trafford as a finished product. Instead, the Red Devils would need to work on developing and unearthing their potential new star if they secure his signature in 2025.

With four goals and seven assists for Boca Juniors since January, it’s clear that Ten Hag would need to work on Zenon’s output first and foremost. The last thing that Manchester United’s current attack needs is another winger who struggles in front of goal.

Avishka Gunawardene appointed Afghanistan batting coach for Pakistan ODIs

This will be the former Sri Lanka batter’s first major assignment since being cleared of corruption charges in May

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Aug-2021Avishka Gunawardene, the former Sri Lanka opening batter, has been appointed the Afghanistan men’s team’s batting coach for the forthcoming ODIs against Pakistan. The Afghanistan Cricket Board announced this on August 17 via Twitter. ESPNcricinfo understands the ACB had wanted Gunawardene for a longer stint, but Gunawardene has only confirmed his involvement in the ODI series – which is to be played in Sri Lanka – for now.

This will be Gunawardene’s first major assignment since being cleared of corruption charges relating to alleged breaches of the Emirates Cricket Board’s anti-corruption code during the T10 tournament in the UAE in 2017. An independent tribunal cleared Gunawardene in May, following an investigation, leaving him free to resume his coaching career. Gunawardene has served as the Sri Lanka national men’s team’s batting coach, and has also coached the Sri Lanka A and Emerging teams.Related

The appointment comes at a time of major upheaval in Afghanistan with the Taliban taking back the political reins following the withdrawal of US troops from the country. It remains to be seen how cricket is affected by these events, though ACB CEO Hamid Shinwari has been quoted saying he expects the sport to carry on as before.”We will resume our office from tomorrow and the national camp which was underway ahead of the Pakistan series in Sri Lanka will also resume after a two-day break with the change in regime,” Shinwari told PTI on Monday. It is as yet unclear when the Afghanistan side can fly to Sri Lanka for the series (expected to be played sometime in September), as Kabul airport remains closed following the Taliban’s takeover of the city. It is hoped the team can fly over the next two weeks. All three ODIs against Pakistan will be played in Hambantota.

Mumbai, KKR chase batting form in mid-table clash

They’ve seen off the worst batting conditions this season could offer, and both batting units can expect a significant uptick in form

Karthik Krishnaswamy22-Sep-20212:04

Mahela Jayawardene: Rohit Sharma ‘will be fine to play the next game’ for Mumbai Indians

Big pictureThe Mumbai Indians have four wins in eight matches, and the Kolkata Knight Riders three wins in eight. They occupy the amorphous middle section of the points table, indicative of the poor-to-middling seasons a number of their biggest names have endured, particularly with the bat: Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and both Pandya brothers on one side, and Eoin Morgan, Shubman Gill and – by his standards – Andre Russell on the other. The teams’ modest batting returns so far can be at least partly explained by the fact that Mumbai and the Knight Riders have played five and three games, respectively, on Chennai’s slow turners. In theory, they’ve both already seen off the worst batting conditions this season could possibly offer, and both batting units can expect a significant uptick in form.Related

New ground, combination could spark KKR's comeback

If that happens, these teams won’t remain mid-table for too long. But as we’ve seen in previous seasons (the Knight Riders in 2020, for instance), some batting groups can stay in a trough for long periods for no explicable reason.Mumbai have dominated the Knight Riders to an absurd extent over recent seasons, winning 12 of their last 13 meetings. But with injuries potentially leaving Mumbai short of two key players for a second successive game, this could be the Knight Riders’ best chance to make that record look slightly better. In the newsWatch IPL on ESPN+ (US only)

Will Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya play? In his pre-match press conference, Trent Boult was non-committal about their respective fitness statuses, other than to suggest it was “more a precaution to let them have a rest” when they sat out Mumbai’s game against the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. It’s unclear what that portends as far as their availability against the Knight Riders is concerned, but it is understood Rohit is a likelier starter than Hardik.Likely XIs
Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Venkatesh Iyer, 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Nitish Rana, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Andre Russell, 8 Sunil Narine, 9 Lockie Ferguson, 10 Prasidh Krishna, 11 Varun Chakravarthy.Mumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt)/Anmolpreet Singh, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Ishan Kishan, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Hardik Pandya/Saurabh Tiwary, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Adam Milne, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Jasprit Bumrah.Strategy punt Andre Russell has faced more balls from Jasprit Bumrah than from any other bowler in the IPL, and the Mumbai talisman has come out of that head-to-head with a magnificent record: only 51 runs conceded in 40 balls, and three wickets.
Dinesh Karthik, on the other hand, has a terrific record against Bumrah in the IPL, tonking him for 54 runs off 33 balls without being dismissed even once.
Expect plenty of cat-and-mouse as far as these two contests are concerned: how Mumbai use Bumrah’s four-over allocation, and how the Knight Riders line up their death-overs hitters. With the ball, meanwhile, Russell could be used to do a job on Mumbai’s biggest death-overs threat. Kieron Pollard has faced 25 balls from Russell in the IPL, and scored only 16 runs off them, while being dismissed once. The last time these two teams met, the Knight Riders bowled spin through the first five overs of Mumbai’s innings. Conditions may not allow them to do that this time, but the Knight Riders may still be tempted to include a third, opponent-specific spinner in Harbhajan Singh. Harbhajan has a superb head-to-head record against Quinton de Kock (40 balls, 35 runs conceded, one wicket), and Mumbai may also play at least two other left-hand batters in Ishan Kishan and Krunal Pandya, plus possibly Saurabh Tiwary too.Stats that matter Their line-ups contain some of the most fearsome death-overs hitters in the business, but Mumbai (8.62) and the Knight Riders (9.02) have the worst and third-worst scoring rates of all teams in overs 17-20 this season, with Sunrisers Hyderabad (8.69 before their match against the Delhi Capitals) slotting between them. Shubman Gill is set to play his 50th IPL game. If Rohit Sharma plays and scores 18, he’ll become the first batter to score 1000 runs against a single opposition in the IPL. So far, he has 982 runs against the Knight Riders at an average of 46.76 and a strike rate of 133.06.

Tottenham now want to beat Arsenal to sign "amazing" new midfielder in 2025

Following a mixed start to the current campaign, Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly already identified a 2025 transfer target in a battle with rivals Arsenal.

Tottenham transfer news

Spurs remain one of the most difficult sides to predict in the Premier League. Whilst things were finally looking up after they brushed Manchester United aside to win 3-0 at Old Trafford, they’ve since followed that up with a narrow victory over Ferencvaros in the Europa League before capitulating when 2-0 up against Brighton & Hove Albion to lose 3-2 in dramatic fashion.

Heading into the international break off the back of such a frustrating result, the focus has since shifted towards further reinforcements for Ange Postecoglou and his side, who already welcomed the likes of Archie Gray and Dominic Solanke in the summer.

Real Madrid could now make "strong offer" to sign £35m Tottenham star

The Galacticos are very keen on him.

In fact, the Lilywhites have already reportedly started thinking about next summer’s transfer window and one particular target. According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Tottenham have already identified Georgiy Sudakov as a transfer target for next summer and could make the Shakhtar Donetsk star their first arrival of the new year.

The Lilywhites aren’t alone in their interest, however, with Manchester City and Arsenal also keen to add the attacking midfield to their ranks next year to create a highly-contested battle for his signature.

Still just 22 years old, Sudakov is quickly becoming one to watch amid an electric start to the current campaign. A player who’s already got Champions League experience to his name, the Ukraine international would undoubtedly be an impressive coup to hand Postecoglou a major boost in North London next year.

"Amazing" Sudakov could unleash Solanke

As if things couldn’t get any better for Solanke, who has well and truly found his goalscoring touch at Spurs, those in North London could now welcome an added source of creativity in Sudakov. The attacking midfielder, combined with the former Liverpool man, would form the foundation for Postecoglou’s attack for years to come, perhaps taking Spurs back to the Champions League in the process.

The introduction of another creative midfielder alongside the likes of James Maddison could only increase Solanke’s numbers even further, whilst handing Postecoglou another player capable of getting on the scoresheet himself.

Praised for his “amazing” diagonal passing ability by analyst Ben Mattinson, Sudakov is a player who looks destined to reach the very top. The only question is the route that he takes. Whether he stops in North London, and Spurs in particular, on his way to the top remains to be seen.

Given how inconsistent they’ve been so far this season, the Lilywhites could certainly do with a reinforcement of such calibre in what would see them avoid losing out to Premier League rivals in the transfer market.

What's happened to Harry Kane? England captain enduring worst goal-scoring run of his Bayern Munich career

The striker has broken multiple records since moving to the Allianz Arena in 2023, but he's now not scored from open play for 541 minutes

Bayern Munich's 3-0 loss to Feyenoord on Wednesday was as puzzling as it was surprising. The Bavarians had enjoyed an 80 percent share of possession and taken 30 shots on goal – and yet coach Vincent Kompany felt their shock defeat was fully deserved.

Why? What did they do wrong? For the always straight-talking Joshua Kimmich, though, it was all very simple. "It's never a good idea," he said matter-of-factly, "to both make a lot of defensive mistakes, and not score."

While several players were singled out for special criticism for gifting Feyenoord goals, including Raphael Guerreiro, who conceded a penalty two minutes after coming on, Harry Kane, as the focal point of the attack, rather predictably copped most of the blame for Bayern's failings up front.

Not for the first time this season, the England international was accused by the German press of going missing when his team needed him most…

AFP'Too old and too expensive'?!

Kane has always had his critics. Even before he signed for Bayern in the summer of 2023 for €100 million, club legend Lothar Matthaus argued that the then-30-year-old was "too old and too expensive". Every second since has been spent trying to prove his worth to the club – and he's done a decent job of it so far.

Certainly, Kane's first season couldn't have gone much better from a purely individual perspective. The former Tottenham ace smashed Uwe Seeler's record for most goals during a debut Bundesliga campaign by netting 36 times in just 32 appearances – while he also finished as the Champions League's top scorer.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportBayern back on top

Unfortunately, while Kane delivered in 2023-24, the majority of those around him did not, and Bayern failed to win a single trophy for the first time in 12 years, prompting many football fans to wonder if the one of the most complete centre-forwards of his generation really is cursed.

Encouragingly for Kane, Bayern are well-placed to reclaim their Bundesliga title this term, with Kompany's side presently four points clear of defending champions Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the table. However, the midweek defeat at De Kuip has cast doubt on not only the team's true strength, but also their star striker's diminishing returns – particularly in big games.

Getty Images'Least of my worries'

After the damaging Feyenoord defeat, which effectively ended Bayern's hopes of progressing directly to the last 16 of the Champions League, sporting director Max Eberl insisted that Kane was "the least of my worries right now" – and one can understand why.

On the face of it, the No.9 is on track for another prolific season. Kane has scored 22 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions, and is averaging a strike every 86.64 minutes – across Europe's 'Big Five' leagues, only Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski boasts a better ratio.

The issue is, though, that 10 of Kane's goals this season have come from the penalty spot, and he's not scored once from open play since November.

GettyNo 'mental problem'

Eberl rightly pointed out that Kane did miss four games in all competitions in December due to injury and thus played down the significance of this two-month 'drought'.

"If it were a young player, you might worry more, but Harry Kane has had so many highs and also some lows, so if anyone can cope and deal with it, it's Harry Kane," the sporting director told reporters. "Of course, we need his goals. He knows that and is probably the one who is most critical of himself. But I don't think it's causing a mental problem for Harry."

It is, however, starting to become a cause for concern.

£120,000-p/w Newcastle star now out for weeks as new injury update shared

Newcastle United are now going to have to make do without an “absolutely outstanding” player for a number of weeks after some team news emerged ahead of the clash with Brighton.

Latest Newcastle news

Transfer rumours continue to circulate regarding the Magpies after a quiet summer, with Bayern Munich superstar Leroy Sane linked with an exciting move to St James’ Park. They are far from alone in showing interest, however, with Arsenal and Manchester United all reported to be in the mix.

Similarly, Lille attacking ace Jonathan David has also been considered a high-profile addition who could take Newcastle up a level in the final third, but there is again plenty of interest in acquiring his signature.

On the flip side, the Magpies will be desperately looking to keep hold of Alexander Isak, given his status as one of his side’s most important players, but he is believed to be wanted by Barcelona, who are eyeing a big-money move for the Swedish marksman.

This weekend, Newcastle return to Premier League action with the visit of Brighton, as Eddie Howe’s men look to kick on further this season. A significant injury blow has emerged leading up to kickoff, though.

Newcastle handed fresh injury blow

Writing on X on Friday morning, following Howe’s press conference, BBC reporter Nisha Joshi shared numerous injury updates, confirming that Kieran Trippier is out injured for Newcastle for “weeks” after suffering a hamstring problem.

At 34, Trippier may not quite be the force he was when he first joined the Magpies, but this is still an undoubted blow, given his vast experience and dependability at right-back. The Englishman’s importance is not lost on Howe, either, who lauded his defender after he won the North East Football Writers Player of the Year award earlier this year.

“What a fantastic choice (The North East Football Writers) made in picking Kieran as your player of the season. Kieran last year was absolutely outstanding in every phase of the play, whether that was creating goals or helping us not concede.

“He also led the team incredibly well during different moments of the season and was always an inspiration off it to help be a role model to the younger players to help progress their careers.”

In Trippier’s absence, Tino Livramento should see this as a great opportunity to shine once again, with the 21-year-old very much seen as his compatriot’s long-term successor at right-back at St James’.

Newcastle must regret losing £10m "monster" who's now worth 320% more

Newcastle must regret £10m sale who’s now worth 320% more.

ByAngus Sinclair Oct 18, 2024

In truth, he should now arguably be looked at as the superior option anyway, given the £120,000-a-week Trippier’s waning talents – he has started four league games compared to his teammate’s three this season – but a strong run of form from Livramento in the coming weeks should only strengthen his claim.

Tensions between Amorim and Garnacho reportedly escalated in December, when the winger was unexpectedly dropped from the squad alongside Marcus Rashford ahead of a highly anticipated clash with Manchester City. However, Garnacho eventually fought his way back into the starting lineup and has since established himself as a regular fixture in United’s attack. He featured for the full 90 minutes in the Red Devils’ 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday.
