A terrible Euro 2024 warm-up! Spain beaten by incisive Colombia in pre-tournament friendly as toothless La Roja toil at London Stadium

Luis Diaz inspired Colombia to a 1-0 victory as toothless Spain were made to toil at the London Stadium on Friday evening.

Colombia beat Spain 1-0Diaz stole the show with a brilliant outingSpain lacked creativity in midfield and attackGetty ImagesTELL ME MORE

The Liverpool striker put in a shift to remember against La Roja as Colombia stunned Spain in the English capital. Luis de la Fuente left most of the big guns on the bench including Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid skipper Dani Carvajal, first-choice keeper Unai Simon and Manchester City's Rodri.. However, they had little trouble dominating the game as they enjoyed more possession and looked more ominous than their South American counterparts. However, the front four of Mikel Oyazabal, Gerard Moreno, Pablo Sarabia and Joselu struggled to conjure anything significant in the opening 45 minutes.

Colombia manager Nestor Lorenzo decided to freshen things up at half-time and introduced James Rodriguez. And his throw of the dice changed the complexion of the game. Colombia started to gain more control and looked more threatening in attack and eventually, Daniel Munoz broke the deadlock with a superb volley after some superb work down the left from Diaz.

De la Fuente responded by throwing in Alvaro Morata, Nico Williams, and Yamal but the replacements could do nothing to turn the game around as Spain kept the ball, but could not work an opening.

Diaz was undoubtedly the best player on the pitch. His explosive pace coupled with his guile and trickery beat Pedro Porro time and again. Diaz twisted and turned to bamboozle the two centre-backs before floating in a cross for Munoz, who pulled off a stunning volley.

THE BIG LOSER

De la Fuente has got significant work to do with Spain's attack. Unsurprisingly, they enjoyed more of the ball but simply couldn't turn it into anything approaching a chance, and were incapable of finding a way through. Even after he made wholesale changes in the forward line, while searching for the equaliser, things hardly improved for La Roja which should be even more concerning, especially with Euro 2024 around the corner, and a group stage that will throw up fixtures against both Italy and Croatia.

Arsenal have a ‘homegrown Osimhen’ in Hale End’s teen sensation

Much has been made about Arsenal’s striker options so far this season, but perhaps the real question is why the club’s forward line has struggled to click as it did last season.

Goals have been harder to come by for the Gunners, even if they did beat Sheffield United 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Without Gabriel Jesus, a man so awe-inspiring in the midweek win over Sevilla, it seemed to spark a flame in Eddie Nketiah. Yes, it was only against a team rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, but you can only beat what’s in front of you.

Indeed, in recent times it looks as though the attack is starting to flourish again.

Nketiah took his tally for the season to five last weekend, with his hat-trick against the Blades meaning he is now Arsenal’s top goal scorer this season. Only in midweek, the Hale End product had faced fierce criticism. He looked like a player running through treacle, and an ill-disciplined one at that, conceding three fouls in just nine minutes.

That said, the academy graduate still does lack that fierce consistency that the Gunners need if they are to finally topple Manchester City. At the same time, they need someone more reliable on the injury front than the effervescent Jesus.

A move for none other than Victor Osimhen has been touted in recent years, although it could take a mammoth fee to prise him away from Serie A title holders Napoli.

While a move in the January window for a new striking sensation would be a prudent one, they must keep their eye on the academy for the next Nketiah, or even Folarin Balogun.

Step forward Chido Obi-Martin.

Chido Obi-Martin statistics

You may be asking who on earth this unknown talent is. For good reason too. He’s only 15 years of age.

However, he’s already started to appear for the U21s, as he made his debut for Mehmet Ali’s side against Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

He became the first schoolboy to play for the U21s this season and it was a fine reward for an impressive campaign to date.

Thus far, Obi-Martin has scored three goals in six outings for the U18s throughout 2023/24, leading the line as a centre forward expertly.

The teenager has also featured in the UEFA Youth League this term, although is yet to find the net in continental action.

Chido Obi-Martin style of play

What’s so exciting about the striker’s style is that he has the attributes to utterly terrify defenders.

We caught a glimpse of that during his U21 debut with Arsenal academy expert Jeorge Bird expressing that he “looks to have a lot of pace” about him.

That was reiterated by a further academy expert, ‘Hale End Productions’ who took to social media in the build-up to the game. Describing Obi-Martin’s skill set, they noted that he is a “physical menace, with excellent hold-up qualities, can finish well with both feet.”

Interestingly, the account also described him as the club’s “homegrown Osimhen”.

To be compared to such an elite striker at a young age will no doubt do wonders for the forward’s confidence as he looks to earn more minutes at U21 level.

A senior debut is no doubt a long way away, particularly when you consider the players at Arteta’s disposal but Ethan Nwaneri made his Premier League debut at the same age so watch this space…

Hafeez called up to Test squad for Australia series

The allrounder, who last played Test cricket in August 2016, will be the 18th member of Pakistan’s squad for the two-Test series

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Oct-2018Pakistan have added allrounder Mohammad Hafeez to their squad for the two-Test series against Australia in the UAE. Hafeez will fly to Dubai on the first available flight, ahead of the first Test that begins on October 7.Pakistan squad

Azhar Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail, Usman Salahuddin, Sarfraz Ahmed (capt & wk), Mohammad Rizwan, Faheem Ashraf, Shadab Khan, Bilal Asif, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Abbas, Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Hafeez

Hafeez’s inclusion is understood to have been made to bolster an inexperienced Pakistan top order that features Imam-ul-Haq, who has played three Tests, and Fakhar Zaman, who is uncapped, alongside regular Test opener Azhar Ali.The move comes at a time when Hafeez’s international career appeared to be winding down after months of being overlooked. Hafeez played the last of his 50 Tests in August 2016 and had since fallen out of favour with the selectors, who most recently ignored him for the Asia Cup that concluded last week. He last played for Pakistan in July this year, in a T20I against Australia, but was never a consistent fixture in the side, being named in Pakistan’s ODI squad for a bilateral series against Zimbabwe but not featuring in any of the matches. In a further indictment of how far he had fallen, Hafeez was demoted to category B in the PCB’s list of centrally contracted players that was announced in August.Hafeez has been outspoken about his non-selection in recent months, going so far as to nearly call for a press conference against the selection committee. However, he decided against that at the last minute and called his being dropped unfortunate, while making a brief statement about always being available for Pakistan. He has also been critical of Mickey Arthur, the head coach, who reportedly did not view Hafeez as part of his plans. All of that meant Hafeez was left to play domestic cricket, where he had an excellent run in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan’s premier first-class tournament. Hafeez opened his tournament with a six-wicket haul that consigned Federally Administered Tribal Areas to an innings defeat. He also slammed 280 runs in three matches, including a double-century against Peshawar.

Abbas breaks into top three in Test bowling rankings

This comes on the heels of the 28-year old becoming the joint second-fastest Pakistani to 50 Test wickets

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-20180:50

Mohammad Abbas, Pakistan’s second-fastest to 50 Test wickets

On the heels of becoming the joint second-fastest Pakistani to 50 Test wickets, fast bowler Mohammad Abbas has risen 11 places to No. 3 in the bowling rankings. That leaves only James Anderson (899 points) and Kagiso Rabada (882) ahead of him.Abbas played a starring role in Pakistan’s 1-0 series victory over Australia. He picked up 17 wickets at an average of 10.58, which is the best for any Pakistan bowler with 15 or more wickets in a series. More astoundingly, his career average of 15.64 is the best for any bower with 50-plus wickets in the last 100 years. The top three on the ICC Test bowler’s rankings•ESPNcricinfo LtdThe 28-year old has only just started playing Test cricket. He made his debut in in April 2017 and 10 matches into his career he already has four five-wicket hauls. During the course of his match-winning 10 for 95 against Australia in Abu Dhabi, he was tipped by Dale Steyn to become the No. 1 bowler in the world.

While that is yet to happen, Abbas, who worked in a leather factory, earning his livelihood through welding work and working as a helper in a law firm in Sialkot, might not find too many reasons to complain. He was named Man of the Match and Man of the Series after Pakistan recorded their biggest ever Test victory in terms of runs this week.

Todd Cantwell binned in Rangers’ predicted lineup vs Sparta

Glasgow Rangers return to Europa League action on Thursday night as they take on Sparta Prague in the fourth match of the group stage phase.

The Light Blues are unbeaten in Philippe Clement's first five competitive games in charge of the club but the Belgian boss is now looking for his first European win at the helm.

His side are coming into this clash off the back of a 3-1 win over Hearts in the semi-final of the League Cup, a game in which two goals from James Tavernier either side of a Scott Wright strike secured the win.

However, that victory does not guarantee that the same XI will be selected for Thursday's outing and here is a predicted line-up for the match, that includes three alterations to the team.

1 GK – Jack Butland

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The Gers number one should keep his place between the sticks as the summer signing on a free transfer from Crystal Palace has been in sublime form.

He has kept two clean sheets in three Europa League outings, along with seven shutouts in 11 Premiership games, and should remain in goal on Thursday.

2 RB – James Tavernier (C)

Dujon Sterling returned from injury to feature off the bench against Hearts but the Gers captain should retain his position at right-back for this clash.

The English dynamo scored two of his side's three goals, including a stunning free-kick into the top corner, last time out and carries a significant goal threat.

3 CB – Connor Goldson

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion defender has been in impressive form during the Europa League campaign so far this season and should be selected at the heart of the backline.

Goldson has started all three of the club's group games and played a huge role in the two clean sheets that they have been able to secure, with a dominant duel success rate of 69% and three tackles and interceptions per game.

4 CB – Ben Davies

The first of the three changes that could be made to the XI is left-footed defender Ben Davies coming into the line-up to replace veteran ace Leon Balogun.

Like Goldson, the 28-year-old battler has started all three of the team's group stage games and has done enough to suggest that he is deserving of his place in the team.

These statistics from last time out against Sparta suggest that the defender produced an excellent display in the 0-0 draw to keep a clean sheet for Rangers, with his dominant defensive instincts providing a platform for the rest of the team to build from.

5 LB – Borna Barisic

Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

Another player who could remain in the starting line-up from the win over Hearts is left-back Borna Barisic, who has the potential to provide creativity at the top end of the pitch.

A defender by position, the Croatia international is not confined to his own half and has created two chances per game across two Europa League matches this term, which is 0.5 more per match than any of his teammates have managed.

6 DM – John Lundstram

Rangers midfielder John Lundstram.

The English whiz could line up at the base of the midfield, as he did against Hearts, and look to continue his fine form in Europe so far this season.

Lundstram has created two 'big chances' and made 2.7 tackles and interceptions per game across his three Europa League outings, which suggests that he has made an impact at both ends of the pitch.

7 DM – Jose Cifuentes

Rangers midfielder Jose Cifuentes

The second of the three changes that could be made is Jose Cifuentes being selected from the start to partner Lundstram over Scotland international Ryan Jack.

He is yet to start a match under Clement and this game could be an opportunity to name him in the line-up, particularly with Rangers being at home and needing to be on the front foot.

Cifuentes completed two dribbles and created one chance in his only Europa League start against Betis and arrived at Ibrox after a return of seven goals and six assists in 28 matches during the 2022 MLS campaign for LAFC, whose coach Marc Dos Santos lauded him as “very dynamic.

Whereas, Jack has only played nine minutes of Europa League football this term and has averaged 0.6 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per match in the Premiership, which suggests that he does not offer as much attacking quality as the Ecuador international.

8 RW – Ross McCausland

The third and final alteration that the Belgian head coach could make is to be bold and bring in Ross McCausland for a start on the right of the attack.

Scott Wright was brought on half time to replace Todd Cantwell against Hearts, a decision that the manager confirmed was a tactical one, and popped up with a superb goal to secure the win with a crisp, driven, finish into the bottom corner from the right side of the box.

However, he is now a serious doubt for the match with a muscle injury and McCausland could fill in for him as a direct wide option, instead of Cantwell, who prefers to drift into central positions to make things happen.

The former Norwich City man has gone four games without a goal or an assist to his name in all competitions and could now be ditched from the XI in order to bring in the academy graduate to offer natural width on the right, which is what Wright did with his cameo against Hearts.

9 AM – Sam Lammers

Rangers forward Sam Lammers.

In the number ten position, the summer signing from Atalanta could retain his place after one goal and one assist in his last two outings, albeit both of those came in the 5-0 win over Dundee.

The 26-year-old forward has yet to provide a goal or an assist in this competition for the Light Blues, though, and should be hoping to change that on Thursday.

10 LW – Abdallah Sima

Rangers winger Abdallah Sima.

On the left of the attack, Sima should start as he has proven himself to be an excellent goalscoring threat since his loan switch from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The winger has contributed with two goals in three Europa League appearances and chipped in with five goals and one assist in six Premiership starts.

'An incredible player' – Lionesses star Alessia Russo praised for adding 'another element' to Arsenal by Gunners skipper Kim Little

Alessia Russo has added "another element" to Arsenal, believes skipper Kim Little, who has been impressed with plenty in the England striker's game.

Russo joined Arsenal from Man Utd last summerGunners skipper Little praises her impactHighlights new 'element' England star has addedWHAT HAPPENED?

Russo joined the Gunners on a free transfer from Manchester United in the summer, just a few months after the London club had tabled a world-record bid for her in the January window. It was clear that Arsenal rated her highly, then, and the squad Russo has joined this season has been impressed with her ability, too.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

It has been a difficult campaign at times for the England star, and she herself has even opened up on the challenge of adapting to a new team, but there have been some memorable moments, too. A star performance against Chelsea in the Women's Super League just before Christmas was a particular highlight, as well as the decisive goal she scored in the north London derby in March.

WHAT LITTLE SAID

Asked what Russo has brought to the Arsenal team, captain Little said: "Less is one of the best technical players to receive the ball and her touch, I think she is one of the hardest players to get the ball off, I think you can all see that when any kind of speed or type of ball is hit up to her. She's also got one of the cleanest strikes I've seen as well, when you're watching her in training every day.

"I think she adds yet another element to the team and has brought that this year, which is fun for all of us. I think we have such a kind of dynamic team and versatile team, we have Stina [Blackstenius] who has such great attributes in lengthening the game for us and making the channel runs, being really explosive and powerful, and then Less complements that in a way with her technical ability and close control. I think both of them have performed and scored in really key moments this year."

DID YOU KNOW?

Little has often played in a more advanced midfield role this season, which means she has had to work closely with both Russo and Blackstenius, the Gunners' Swedish striker.

Speaking about the relationships she is building with both on the pitch as a result, Little said: "With Less coming in, she's an incredible player and likewise with Stina. I've played a number of times with Stina as the No.9 as well and I think that's a challenge. It's part of the game to be able to build these connections with different players and bring out their strengths.

"Stina and Less are very different players and my role is, what can I do to bring out their strengths most and then also allow me to do what I'm capable of? I've enjoyed it. I enjoy playing football and the challenge of trying to win a game, whether that's in a 10 position or an 8 or whatever I'm asked, it's how can I do that as best as I can to get the win."

Tshwane Spartans win high-scoring thriller by one run

Gihahn Cloete’s 80 had carried the visiting side to 203 for 5, but Cameron Delport’s 73 ensured Paarl Rocks were in the game till the very end

The Report by Saurabh Somani18-Nov-2018Theunis de Bruyn played a fine knock at the top of the order•Gallo ImagesA good-sized Sunday crowd at the Boland Park got its money’s worth, if not its home team winning when Tshwane Spartans beat Paarl Rocks by just one run in a high-scoring Mzansi Super League match. Spartans had been driven by their openers to a sizeable 203 for 5, with Gihahn Cloete’s 80 and Theunis de Bruyn’s 66 setting a strong foundation. The Rocks had good contributions through the order, with Cameron Delport’s 73 the centrepiece, but they fell agonisingly short in their first match of the competition.Spartans, who had lost their first match, held on barely, to get their first points. The game was never in control of either side during the chase, with Delport’s fireworks at the top of the order wresting the initiative back for the Rocks everytime the chase stumbled or a wicket fell. Delport’s hitting, particularly on the leg side, was ferocious. But he showed that he could smash the ball to all parts of the ground too, especially when unfurling a switch-hit for six over point. While he was around, the chase was within the Rocks’ grasp. Delport maintained only one tempo throughout his innings, and Spartans seemed to be quickly running out of ideas. Swapping out Shaun von Berg for de Bruyn had yielded dividends while batting, but it meant AB de Villiers had only five bowlers to call on, and couldn’t throw the ball elsewhere with Delport creaming all comers.Eventually, the 20-year-old Lutho Simpala made the key strike, keeping one fast, full and straight and hitting timber when Delport’s attempted late cut failed to connect. When he fell, the equation read 67 to win off 32 balls, and with Delport striking the way he was, the target seemed within reach. The wicket led to two quiet overs in the 17th and 18th, but Mangaliso Mosehle put things back on an even keel in a 17-run over off Rory Kleinveldt. However, with 13 needed off the last over, neither Mosehle nor Patrick Kruger could find the boundary, and that made the difference in the end. They did come desperately close, with Kruger having hit one almost over long-on. But Dean Elgar leapt backwards and though the ball burst through his fingers, it hit his face and rolled inside, without having gone beyond the boundary even though the fielder’s backwards momentum carried him over the rope. When Spartans batted though, it didn’t look like the game would come down to such fine margins. De Bruyn began by peppering the straight boundary in particular with vigour, and Cloete showed excellent temperament in playing the supporting role in two partnerships, without ever becoming bogged down himself.De Bruyn had the majority of the strike in the opening partnership, and did the majority of the scoring too, with 101 raised in ten overs before he fell. The last man the Rocks would have wanted walking in with such a platform was de Villiers, and the Spartans captain promptly set about destroying the bowling, seemingly picking up from where he had left off in the previous match, which had brought him a whirlwind half-century.De Villiers even switch-pulled Dane Paterson – a shot only he in world cricket could have conceptualised, let alone executed – and Spartans seemed well on course for a 220-plus target. It came down to Dwayne Bravo’s proven wiliness in T20 cricket to rein the total in. Bravo – who got his 450th T20 wicket in the game – made the key strike by getting de Villiers to hole out to fine leg. Cloete continued to clobber the ball, nailing several slog-sweeps, until he was caught behind. The Rocks fought back admirably with only 25 runs coming in the last four overs, and would have felt reasonably confident heading into the break. As it turned out, they had conceded too many.

Reporter shares "encouraging" transfer news he’s now heard from Man Utd

Manchester United have put the feelers out in the scouting department as they target two players from the same side to strengthen Erik ten Hag's squad at Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Manchester United's injury woes…

Undoubtedly, Manchester United have suffered their fair share of injury problems as Ten Hag looks to keep his side in contention for continental qualification this term. As cited by talkSPORT, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Amad Diallo, Jonny Evans, Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana, Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all sidelined due to various issues and it remains to be seen who will recover in time to face Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford was also withdrawn from England's 2-0 win over Malta last Friday in EURO 2024 qualifying; however, Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate looks to have alleviated concerns that the Wythenshawe-born forward could be set for a spell on the sidelines.

He stated via The Mirror: "I think he (Rashford) is probably okay. We just thought given the nature of the collision it was a chance to get Cole into the game. I haven’t assessed too much but I think he was okay when he came off."

The timing of Manchester United's prolonged injury crisis is not ideal, with their trip to Everton being followed by crunch matches in quick succession against Galatasaray, Newcastle United and Chelsea.

Occupying fifth position in the English top-flight, Manchester United are five points off the Premier League top-four and have little margin for error if they are serious about keeping pace with the chasing pack; however, transfer insider Jones has revealed some exciting news regarding two players who could potentially arrive at Old Trafford in January.

Man Utd scout Vanderson and Youssouf Fofana

Earlier this month, 90min reported that Manchester United were keeping tabs on AS Monaco pair Vanderson and Youssouf Fofana as Ten Hag looks to install additional reinforcements at Old Trafford.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Jones has now indicated that the "encouraging" rumours involving the Red Devils and both players are indeed true, as he told the outlet: "Yeah, they are definitely two players that have been looked at. I've checked this one out and there have definitely been scouting reports made. I can't personally be convinced that that is for January. I think a lot of it seems geared towards the long term.

Vanderson

"But you know it's interesting to see that Manchester United are looking at these players and I think for fans, probably encouraging too, to see the types of players that they are scouting right now."

Uncertainty continues to persist regarding the futures of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro at Old Trafford, which may offer some explanation as to why Manchester United would be linked to both a midfielder and a right-back.

Nevertheless, we will need to wait and see if moves for either Vanderson or Fofana materialise come the New Year as United look to bolster their ranks with quality arrivals.
