Harry Maguire is finished! Why Gareth Southgate must give up on Man Utd outcast if he wants to win Euro 2024

The world's most expensive defender is holding the Three Lions back – and the manager has to wield the axe before it's too late

England have all the tools to win the 2024 European Championship, as Gareth Southgate boasts arguably the most well-rounded squad in international football. That is, if you remove Harry Maguire from the equation.

The Manchester United centre-half has won 58 caps for his country to date, chipping in with seven goals along the way, with many of his best performances coming at major tournaments. The problem is, at 30-years-old, Maguire is now so clearly past his prime.

United spent £80 million ($100m) to sign Maguire from Leicester City back in 2019, but struggled to sell him for even a quarter of that amount in the summer transfer window. He spent the majority of last season on the sidelines at club level, having fallen down the pecking order following Erik ten Hag's appointment as manager at Old Trafford, and was rightly stripped of his captaincy duties in July.

There appears to be no way back for Maguire in Manchester, and yet, he remains a firm fixture in England's starting XI. Southgate has always had his favourites, but it's getting harder and harder for him to justify the inclusion of the former Leicester man.

If Maguire is still in the picture by the time the Euros kick off in Germany next summer, England can kiss their chances of glory goodbye. Southgate must be well aware of the lumbering defender's limitations by now, and the time has come for him to show that he has a ruthless streak by cutting him out of his plans as soon as possible.

Getty Images'I've never let my country down'

"Of course I love playing for my country and in 50-odd caps I feel like I’ve never let my country down," Maguire told reporters in March. "I feel like I’m good enough to play at a high level and I’ve proven that over the last five, six years now."

The United outcast defended himself admirably in the face of widespread criticism last season, but his words were ultimately hollow. No one who has watched Maguire for club or country in 2023 would agree that he is good enough to play at the top level anymore.

Maguire has been a reliable figure for England over the years, but he is now standing in the way of their progress. That much was painfully obvious during a 1-1 draw with Ukraine in Euro 2024 qualifying on Saturday that saw the Three Lions miss their chance to take full control of Group C.

England fell behind in the 26th minute at the Wroclaw Stadium in Poland, with Arsenal full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko timing his run into the box perfectly to bury a clever cut-back from Yukhym Konoplya. The goal might have been avoided had it not been for Maguire, who comically ran into the same space as Marc Guehi, and ended up hugging his centre-back partner as the ball fell perfectly for Zinchenko to slot home behind him.

It was another prime example of Maguire's lack of spatial awareness, mobility and speed – as if England supporters needed any more. But more concerning was the United man's caution on the ball in a game that desperately needed an injection of positivity.

Maguire would often demand the ball as England's deepest player, take a few strides forward, then cut back and play the safest possible pass to his defensive colleagues. His tendency in possession rubbed off on the rest of the team right up until the final whistle, as the Three Lions settled for a point thanks to Kyle Walker's brilliant equaliser shortly before the interval.

England badly missed John Stones' trademark runs out of defence and progressive passing range, with Maguire's weaknesses made all the more glaring in his absence.

Advertisement(C)GettyImagesA spare part at United

It's certainly no surprise that Maguire looks rusty, given the fact he is still spending most of his time sitting on the sidelines at United. He was an unused substitute in their first two home games of the 2023-24 campaign against Wolves and Nottingham Forest, and only featured in the loss at Arsenal last time out after an injury to Lisandro Martinez.

Victor Lindelof started the Arsenal game ahead of Maguire, while Jonny Evans' surprise return to the club has also increased competition for regular minutes. United are currently dealing with a defensive injury crisis of sorts, with Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw both set to be missing for the next few weeks.

However, Martinez is expected to make a quick recovery from his foot injury, and should be back in the starting XI when United play host to Brighton on Saturday. Even when Ten Hag is short on options, deploying Maguire appears to be his last resort.

That theme is unlikely to change as the season progresses. United's improvement in 2022-23 was underpinned by the success of Varane and Martinez's partnership at the back, while Lindelof has upped his level in order to stave off a potential move away from the club.

Amazingly, though, Maguire's position as an also-ran at Old Trafford still doesn't seem to be bothering Southgate. "He’s a very experienced player and he’s looked very good in training," the England boss said before the Ukraine game.

"Harry knows where our support is. He knows he has to keep playing well for us and I think over the next few weeks given what’s happening with their [United's] squad with injuries he may well have a lot more minutes for them as well."

After his performance against Ukraine, Southgate must be rethinking his stance on Maguire. He didn't meet the minimum requirements of an England squad member, let alone a starter, and the situation cannot continue in the long-term.

Getty ImagesHad his chance to leave

Maguire's outlook might have been very different had he swallowed his pride and left United in the last transfer window. West Ham saw a £30m ($38m) offer for the experienced defender accepted in early August, and only needed to reach an agreement on personal terms in order to seal the transfer.

However, the Hammers eventually backed out of the deal after growing tired of waiting amid reports that Maguire had demanded a £15m ($19m) pay-off from United to cover the significant drop in wages he would have had to accept at the London Stadium. The Red Devils were unable to oblige, not least because they were operating on a tight budget due to FFP restrictions.

It was later reported that Maguire told Ten Hag that he wanted to stay and fight for his place at United, despite clearly not being the right profile for the Dutch manager's preferred system. He could have played week in, week out at West Ham, who are also back in the Europa League, but didn't want to give up his cushy position at Old Trafford.

United are reportedly still paying out £190,000 ($238,000) in weekly wages to Maguire, who still has two years left to run on his current contract. Clearly, the England international is more concerned by financial gain than career achievements at this stage of his career.

West Ham would have given Maguire the platform to prolong his stay in the Three Lions' set-up. Instead, he has risked fading into obscurity for the sake of a bigger retirement pot – which says a lot about his character.

GettyEngland do have better options

Levi Colwill, Fikayo Tomori and Lewis Dunk would all have had every right to feel aggrieved as they sat on the bench watching Maguire's disaster-class against Ukraine. Southgate had three decent options at his disposal to shake up the defence, but once again showed loyalty to United's former captain.

The standout pick to partner Manchester City treble winner Stones right now is Guehi, who has proven himself as an assured defender with excellent physical and mental attributes for Crystal Palace. At only 23, he has plenty of room to improve too, and will surely make the step up to a bigger club if he continues on his current trajectory.

Tomori also has a strong case, having been a fixture in AC Milan's starting XI since his move to San Siro from Chelsea in 2021. But the most exciting option is Blues new boy Colwill.

On the back of a stellar showing for England's U21s during their successful European Championship campaign, Chelsea tied the 20-year-old down to a bumper new six-year contract. Colwill has certainly made an instant impression on Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino, as he's started all four of their Premier League games at the start of the 2023-24 campaign.

Unlike Maguire, Colwill is extremely comfortable on the ball and has a knack for breaking the lines with intelligent passes under pressure. In his 17 appearances on loan at Brighton last term, Colwill boasted an 86 per cent forward pass completion rate – which only Thiago Silva was able to better among Chelsea's crop of centre-backs.

Colwill is also deceptively strong and quick, with a mature head on his shoulders that holds him in good stead to go on and fulfil his immense potential. To his credit, Southgate has at least acknowledged that the Chelsea starlet is now in the frame to challenge Maguire for his position.

"He [Maguire] and John Stones has been a partnership that's been brilliant for us, but we've got young centre backs coming up who are getting that experience and that will be the challenge going forward," Southgate said last week.

"Colwill is a very good player. It's interesting with Marc Guehi coming up as well, we need that competition."

‘Don’t really care’ – Lionel Messi’s absence means nothing to Houston Dynamo boss as Ben Olsen revels in U.S. Open Cup glory

The Houston Dynamo edged out Inter Miami to win the 2023 U.S. Open Cup, with Ben Olsen saying “I don’t care” that Lionel Messi missed that contest.

Much of the pre-match build-up ahead of a showpiece fixture in Florida had focused on the fitness of seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi and whether he would be ready to play any part. In the end, injury restricted the Argentine icon to a spectator role at DRV PNK Stadium.

Inter Miami were also without former Barcelona defender Jordi Alba, as they attempted to add another trophy to their historic Leagues Cup triumph from back in August, and Tata Martino’s side were unable to get the job done with key figures stuck in the stands.

WHAT THEY SAID

That has not taken any of the shine off Houston’s success for head coach Olsen, with the Dynamo good value for their 2-1 win. Olsen told of only being able to beat what is in front of you: “You can't always play a full game at a really high level. This team's hard. If you don't stick the knife in when you get a third chance, a fourth chance, you know they're going to continue to come back. There's too much quality on that field. They were missing a player or two, but I don't really care. I don't really care.”

The Dynamo are now celebrating their first trophy win since 2018, with Olsen’s appointment in 2022 being vindicated, while Inter Miami’s focus has been narrowed on a bid to reach the MLS play-offs – with Messi set to step back in at some stage as he returns to full match fitness.

Lionel Messi's eighth Ballon d'Or is no 'scandal' – but is it his last? Inter Miami move means the GOAT is likely done winning Golden Balls

The award no longer means as much to the World Cup winner, but it was fully deserved and means he has another record that will never be broken

Toni Kroos has long lamented the importance attached to the Ballon d'Or, Philipp Lahm says it's now nothing more than a popularity contest in which goalscorers are the only possible victors, while Gary Lineker says the constant debate surrounding an individual prize in a team sport has "just got silly". In a damning sign of the times, though, the award retains a remarkable ability to rile people up.

Even before Lionel Messi collected an eighth Ballon d'Or in Paris on Monday, West Ham striker Michail Antonio claimed that it would be a "scandal" if the prize did not go to Erling Haaland – with the West Ham striker inexplicably overlooking the fact that the Norwegian is not even Manchester City's best player, let alone the world's.

Callum Wilson agreed with his fellow Premier League forward, though, and rather amusingly argued that if you take international football out of the equation, the Norwegian was the only possible winner. Because, you know, the biggest tournament in sport has never been the deciding factor in a Ballon d'Or vote…

Indeed, former Real Madrid winger Eden Hazard called Messi's triumph "logical" in light of what happened in Qatar last December, with the Belgian pointing out that it would make no sense to reward anyone other than "the best player in history in the year that he won the World Cup".

Hazard acknowledged it could have been a different story had Kylian Mbappe's France prevailed on penalties in Lusail rather than Argentina, and that is a sentiment shared by Les Bleus legend Thierry Henry, but when asked on who should win this year's Ballon d'Or, his answer was as as emphatic as it was succinct. "Messi," he said. "Over. Bye!"

Getty Images'I can't ask for more'

There's certainly an air of finality to Messi's record-extending victory. He's now 36 years old and, with all due respect to MLS, no longer plying his trade in a major European league. It would require something truly remarkable for him to even contend for another Ballon d'Or, especially as it seems that a new era is upon us, with Haaland likely to be battling it out with the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham for the next decade.

Of course, nothing can be ruled out when it comes to a miracle man who has repeatedly rewritten the record books and retains an impressive ability to stun the footballing world. Remember, we all thought Messi would call time on his international career after Qatar 2022 – it felt like a fairy-tale finish, the perfect way to bow out.

"Obviously, I wanted to complete my career with this [trophy] – I can't ask for more," he said on a night of high emotion in Lusail, where even seasoned Argentine and French journalists in the press box were reduced to tears by what the epic encounter they had just witnessed. "After this, what else is there? I have a Copa America, a World Cup."

AdvertisementGettyCould he really win a ninth Ballon d'Or?

Even when he said he'd like to enjoy a few more matches as a world champion, it was thought that he just wanted to enjoy what proved a wild homecoming party in Argentina. Yet he's still going strong, still scoring goals and still targeting more titles. Fitness permitting, he'll play in yet another Copa America next summer. In all honesty, Argentina would have to win it, with Messi once again at his brilliant best, for him to have any chance of claiming a ninth Ballon d'Or.

It's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility, but it's hard to shake the suspicion that not plying his club football in Europe would count against him. Messi may have beaten City's top treble-winners to this year's Ballon d'Or, but it required a World Cup campaign for the ages. Winning the Copa America wouldn't quite carry the same weight with voters.

Granted, football fans are starting to look outside Europe, particularly those that follow Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo wherever they go, and the former is already winning trophies and causing quite the stir in the United States.

However, it still seems highly unlikely that players primarily plying their trade outside Europe will start winning Ballons d'Or on a regular basis. Messi, after all, has been recognised by France Football again not for inspiring Miami to Leagues Cup glory during the summer – but leading Argentina to a first World Cup win since 1986 last winter.

Getty ImagesPoor season at PSG wasn't so poor

Of course, the likes of Wilson would have you believe that Messi only turned up for six weeks of the 2023-24 campaign, primarily because the No.10 proved powerless to prevent Paris Saint-Germain from suffering an embarrassingly tame Champions League last-16 exit.

However, it's a complete myth that he performed poorly in his final year at Parc des Princes. The reality is that only four players across Europe's 'Big Five' leagues were directly involved in more goals in all competitions at club level last season.

But while the little man may be a magician, not even he should have been expected to make PSG's plethora of deep-rooted problems disappear with a couple of waves of his magic wand of a left foot.

Getty Images'Leo is 99.9% of the team'

And yet what Messi did in Qatar was truly astounding and almost inexplicable. At 35 years of age, he dominated a World Cup like no other player since Diego Maradona in Mexico.

He was, as goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez put it, "99.9 percent of the team", named Man of the Match in five of his seven appearances, including all four of Argentina's knockout games.

No player had ever previously scored in every round from the last 16 to the final, after the change of format for the 1986 tournament, while his assists for Nahuel Molina, against Australia, and Julian Alvarez, against Croatia, will go down as two of the greatest in World Cup history.

Furthermore, with his double against France, he also reached 21 goal involvements in 26 appearances – both figures are records.

The Argentine winger scored the opening goal in Manchester United's 3-0 win over Everton on Saturday with an acrobatic overhead kick and then emulated his idol Cristiano Ronaldo's 'Siuuu' celebration.

After his teammate's incredible performance on the pitch, United captain Fernandes jokingly claimed that Garnacho might have been following his idol too much and also heaped praise on the youngster.

AdvertisementWHAT BRUNO FERNANDES SAID

Speaking to reporters after the game, Fernandes said, "It's amazing — something out of this world, I think. Probably he’s watching too much Cristiano clips! We all know that he's a big fan. Still a long way for him to be like Cristiano but he's getting his steps. He wants to be something special in the world of football and I think he has the capability to do that, but he has to do more than that goal!"

The Portuguese midfielder also spoke highly of Kobbie Mainoo who was named man of the match on his Premier League debut as he said, "Kobbie did a great performance also I think for such a young player. The position he played, the quality put on the game, how brave he was to play on the ball against a team that is really strong and pressing-wise are really, really good. He was amazing on the ball and he gave us so much.

"I talk always about Kobbie. I think he’s a special player too. Obviously, people will not talk as much as they will about Garnacho because Garnacho scores goals, does assists and everything. But what he puts on the game, what he gives to the team, it's known to anyone (in the squad)."

The 29-year-old added, "I think he has great players in front of him to learn (from) because he plays with one of the best in the world like Casemiro. He also Sofyan (Amrabat) who plays in that position that is really good and he's getting everything from them. He wants he wants to learn, is eager to learn and I think that's probably the best capability he has because he wants to learn every time. He's eager to listen to everyone to get better and better."

The strike against the Toffees was Garnacho's maiden Premier League goal this season and second overall after a sloppy start to the campaign. Mainoo, on the other hand, played his first senior competitive match this season after returning from an injury that he had picked up during a pre-season clash against Real Madrid.

PSG player ratings vs Le Havre: Inevitable Kylian Mbappe and impressive defensive rearguard saves Gigi Donnarumma's blushes after moment of madness

The Italy goalkeeper picked up a silly red card, but the 10-man Parisians were bailed out by their main man yet again

Kylian Mbappe played hero for Paris Saint-Germain once again, scoring the first goal of the game as the Ligue 1 leaders crafted a composed defensive performance following the early sending-off of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in Sunday's 2-0 win over Le Havre.

The home side should have found the net early, but a duo of denials — one from Carlos Soler and another from Donnarumma — prevented the home side from finding the net. That was Donnarumma's only positive action, though, as the Italy goalkeeper was given his marching orders for a reckless high boot, leaving the Luis Enrique's side a man down after just 10 minutes.

Despite that, they soon took the lead, and Mbappe provided the crucial moment, dipping inside his man and curling a shot off the inside of the post from the edge of the penalty area. Ousmane Dembele could have made it two in the second half, but saw a shot tickle the outside of the post after beating his man.

At the other end, PSG were more indebted to reserve 'keeper Arnau Tenas than their star striker in the second period. The Barcelona youth product made seven saves, including a fine double-stop, to keep the home side out.

And PSG made Tenas' strong debut worth it, as Vitinha added a crucial second with a deflected strike to give them a four-point lead atop Ligue 1.

GOAL rates PSG's players from Stade Oceane…

Gianluigi Donnarumma (2/10):

Sent off for a beyond stupid high boot. Really poor from Italy's No.1.

Achraf Hakimi (6/10):

Isn't as useful in these more defensive games, but can't be faulted for work rate or one-on-one defending.

Danilo Pereira (8/10):

Half of a makeshift centre-back pairing. Did a job, as usual, with a few vital interventions to keep PSG ahead.

Nordi Mukiele (7/10):

Moved into central defence and was mostly solid. He's in good form at the moment.

Carlos Soler (5/10):

Another weird experiment at full-back. Made one crucial goal-line clearance, before playing the pass that doomed his keeper.

Fabian Ruiz (N/A):

Removed early on with what seemed to be a serious shoulder injury.

Vitinha (7/10):

Not involved much for long stretches in central midfield. He isn't suited to the scrappy, more physical contests like these. More impactful when the Parisians were able to break later on, and bagged a late goal to seal it.

Lee Kang-in (6/10):

Put in a shift, which was valuable after the Parisians went down to 10 men. He's really growing into this side, and looks a good signing.

Ousmane Dembele (6/10):

A wonderful piece of set-up play facilitated Mbappe's opener. Grazed the post with an angled effort in the second half.

Kylian Mbappe (8/10):

Scored one wonderful goal, was narrowly offside as he buried a would-be second. Heroic, again.

Bradley Barcola (N/A):

Sacrificed to get back-up goalkeeper Tenas on. Harsh on the youngster.

Randal Kolo Muani (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Lucas Hernandez (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Milan Skriniar (N/A):

A few nice tackles

Luis Enrique (6/10):

What a nightmare start! Luis Enrique lost one of his most reliable midfielders in Ruiz, and his world-class goalkeeper. To be fair, the manager made all of the right tactical moves, and his side capitalised on their few chances.
