Tottenham's teenage goal machine, the Italian De Bruyne and the NXGN wonderkids to watch at the U19s Euros

It may be the middle of the European summer, but for some of the continent's best teenage footballers, things are about to get serious.

The Under-19s European Championship kicks-off on Saturday, with eight teams vying for the trophy in Slovakia.

The tournament was last played in 2019 – due to the pandemic – and neither of the finalists from three years ago, Spain or Portugal, have qualified this time.

Perennial challengers at youth level, Germany and the Netherlands, have also missed out, making for an interesting line up of teams.

There are still a number of players, however, who have the potential to become stars of the global game and will be worth watching over the next two weeks.

GOAL, in association with NXGN, have picked out the best of the bunch…

Getty ImagesWarren Bondo (France)

A relative veteran with 34 first-team appearances before his 19th birthday, Bondo is the latest young French midfielder to have earned admiring glances from around Europe.

Bayern Munich, Manchester United and AC Milan have all previously been credited with interest in the Nancy teenager, who has played regularly in the second tier of French football for more than a year.

Most comfortable as a deep-lying midfielder, Bondo has the versatility to play as a box-to-box player, and France will likely look to build their team around him as they aim to replicate the success of their U17s side which won their European Championship in early June.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesJamie Bynoe-Gittens (England)

Bynoe-Gittens is the newcomer in the England squad for this tournament, but much of that is owed to the injury problems which have plagued him over the past 18 months.

Those fitness issues, along with Covid-19 cancellations, ruined the 17-year-old's first year-and-a-half at Borussia Dortmund, but the ex-Manchester City winger has wasted little time in getting back up to speed in Germany.

He scored 10 goals in 17 games for Dortmund's U19s in 2021-22 before making four first-team appearances in the final month of the campaign, with the suggestion being he will be a fully-fledged member of the senior squad at Signal-Iduna Park next season.

Getty ImagesCarney Chukwuemeka (England)

Premier League fans have already seen flashes of Chukwuemeka's ability in his cameo appearances for Aston Villa, but this is a tournament where he has the capabilities to take over.

The 18-year-old midfielder, with 14 Premier League appearances under his belt, will be expected to break the lines for England in Slovakia, with both his dribbling and passing capabilities reminiscent of Paul Pogba at his best.

With just one year left on his contract at Villa Park, Europe's elite clubs are queuing up to get their hands on Chukwuemeka, with Manchester United, Barcelona, Arsenal and Bayern Munich all reportedly waiting to pounce once the tournament is over.

Getty ImagesLiam Delap (England)

This time last year, Delap was celebrating breaking the record for the most goals in a single Premier League 2 season after netting 24 times in 20 games for Man City U23s, with many expecting him to enjoy a first season of senior football – likely out on loan – in 2021-22.

Injuries however wrecked Delap's campaign, and the 19-year-old son of Premier League cult hero Rory had to make do with just three appearances for the City first team.

At youth level however, there are few strikers in Europe with a better strike rate than Delap, and as a player who has been likened to his new team-mate Erling Haaland in the past, he will be expected to contribute plenty for England over the next two weeks.

Man Utd winners, losers and ratings as Ten Hag's disastrous debut highlights need for new signings

The Dutchman's reign began in shambolic fashion as he suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United reign got off to the worst possible start after his side were stunned by Brighton.

A first-half double from Pascal Gross put Graham Potter’s side in control – and despite a second half fightback, United only had Alexis Mac Allister’s own goal to show for their efforts in a 2-1 defeat.

Cristiano Ronaldo was introduced from the bench early in the second half, but the want-away forward could not inspire United like he did on so many occasions last term.

There were smatterings of boos at half-time as the home side trudged off the pitch, with Brighton fans taunting Ten Hag with chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning.”

And while that's not going to happen, this wasn't a great way to begin his tenure.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Anthony Martial

This was a good one to miss, no doubt about it.

No-one at United would have wanted to be associated with such a shambolic performance – and Martial, who was so impressive in pre-season, will only have seen his reputation grow by his absence.

United were crying out for his presence at the point of their attack, with Christian Eriksen struggling badly as a makeshift false nine in the first half.

Red Bull Salzburg & Bologna

Or basically any club whose striker has been linked with United over the past week.

Before kick-off here, United were strongly linked with a move for veteran former Stoke and West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic, who is now playing for Bologna. It sounds like a move of desperation and this defeat will only add to the sense of panic within Old Trafford.

United also want Salzburg teenager Benjamin Sesko, but are reluctant to pay in the region of £50 million ($60.3m) for the 19-year-old. After watching this, Salzburg might just think they can hold out for their full asking price.

Erik ten Hag

Although this was a miserable start for the Dutchman, he will surely now have a stronger case to go to his superiors and demand money to save the season before the close of the transfer window.

He has been badly let down by those above him after being forced to go into the campaign with key signings still to be secured.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Erik ten Hag

Ten Hag's reign could hardly have gotten off to a worse start and the pressure is well and truly on from here-on in.

Next week’s game against Brentford is a must-win, while Liverpool are the next visitors to Old Trafford.

He spoke before the game of the need to win ugly. But this was the ugliest of defeats, while the big call to leave Ronaldo out of his starting line-up blew up in his face.

McFred

United fans were dismayed to see the midfield pairing start yet again – and they were totally ineffective as Brighton burst forward with pace.

The need to play Scott McTominay and Fred as a duo threatens to keep holding United back, with neither trusted on their own.

No wonder Ten Hag is so desperate to bring in a top-class holding midfielder, with Frenkie de Jong still his top target.

The Glazers/Richard Arnold

Avi Glazer was in the ground to witness this mess first hand. He may not have seen the pre-match protests outside, but the discontent will only grow louder after this performance.

No surprise, then, that he made a hasty exit after the final whistle.

The Glazers and chief executive, Richard Arnold, have a lot of work on their hands before the transfer window closes. If a move for Arnautovic does materialise, it is unlikely to ease tensions.

Getty ImagesMan Utd Ratings: Defence

De Gea (6/10)

Could do little about either goal. Badly let down by his defence on a number of occasions.

Dalot (6/10)

Much more effective in attack than defence. Sparked the panic that led to Mac Allister’s own goal and played as a virtual winger for the last 25 minutes.

Maguire (5/10)

Too much space between him and Dalot allowed Danny Welbeck to capitalise as Brighton took the lead. Part of a very shaky rear-guard, but some encouraging signs of him carrying the ball out from the back.

Martinez (6/10)

Welcome to English football. Struggled to track Brighton’s forward runners and it will clearly take time for him to build an understanding with Maguire. But these are early days and he improved as the game went on.

Shaw (5/10)

Got forward well in support, but allowed Mac Allister far too much time to get his shot off in the build-up to Brighton’s second. Delivery wasn’t good enough.

Getty ImagesMidfield

McTominay (4/10)

Caught out in build-up to the opening goal and fortunate to just get a yellow for a foul on Moises Caicedo. Ended up playing as an attacking midfielder as Ten Hag pushed for a comeback.

Fred (5/10)

Important challenge snuffed out an early, dangerous Leandro Trossard attack. Didn’t use the ball well enough – but it was still a surprise to see him sacrificed for Ronaldo instead of McTominay.

Eriksen (6/10)

Arguably at his most effective when dropped back into a holding role, where he could pick his passes. Should have done much better with a first half effort that was tamely fired straight at Robert Sanchez.

Fernandes (6/10)

Great chance to open the scoring early on, but couldn’t even hit the target from inside the area. Better when Ronaldo came on and it was his corner that led to the own goal.

World Cup 2022 Group C: Fixtures, results, standings, squads & full details

Everything you need to know about the group that includes Lionel Messi's Argentina

Group C of the 2022 World Cup featured Lionel Messi's Argentina alongside Poland, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

Argentina bounced back from a surprise loss against Saudi Arabia to comfortably dispatch Mexico and Poland 2-0, in the process topping the group.

Poland barely made it through to the next round of games, with their excellent disciplinary record and solid defence giving them an edge over Mexico.

Mexico left it too late for any hope of getting through to the knockout stages and will particularly rue the chances they didn't take in their final game.

While Saudi Arabia couldn't build on their surprise opening day victory against favourites Argentina, they will leave the tournament with their heads held high, and memories which will be remembered for generations.

13 fun facts about Vinícius Júnior

Everything you need to know about Real Madrid's franchise player Vinícius Júnior

Vinícius Júnior, commonly known as Vini Jr., is a young Brazilian footballer who currently plays as a winger for Real Madrid and the Brazilian national team. He was born on July 12, 2000, in São Gonçalo, Brazil.

Vini Jr. started his football career at a young age, joining the youth academy of Flamengo, one of Brazil's biggest clubs, at the age of ten. He quickly rose through the ranks and made his senior team debut in 2017 at the age of 16.

His performances for Flamengo caught the attention of several top European clubs, and in 2018 he was signed by Real Madrid for a reported fee of €45 million, making him one of the most expensive teenagers in football history.

Since joining Real Madrid, Vini Jr. has established himself as one of the most promising young talents in world football. He possesses excellent technical abilities, including impressive dribbling skills and a keen eye for goal.

He has also shown great versatility, and is capable of playing on both wings, although he is primarily a left winger and has made that role his own since Carlo Ancelotti returned for a second stint at Real Madrid in 2021.

In his debut season with Real Madrid, Vini Jr. was one of the few lone bright spots in an otherwise disastrous campaign, making his breakthrough under Santiago Solari, before an injury against Ajax in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 ended his season.

However, he has become Los Blancos' poster boy in the last two years, playing an integral role in helping them clinch a La Liga-Champions League double in the 2021-22 season, scoring 22 goals in all competitions. He has also represented Brazil at various youth levels and made his senior team debut in 2019.

At just 22 years of age, Vini Jr. has already achieved a lot in his career and has already become one of the best players in the world.

However, what are some of the most interesting facts about the blistering Brazilian?

Humble beginnings

Vini Jr.'s football career began in 2006, when his father took him to Flamengo's branch in the Mutuá district of Sao Goncalo.

Born into a poor family, Vini came to live with his uncle Ulisses in Abolição in order to get closer to Ninho do Urubu (the 'Vulture's Nest').

In an interview with AS in 2020, Carlos Eduardo Abrantes – director of the Escolinha de Flamengo and known as the man who discovered Vini – spoke about his childhood days.

"His mother stayed in São Gonçalo and his father worked in São Paulo, in another state. He was a building manager. His mother took him to training and looked after those things," Abrantes stated.

"We got him a school bag to bring to training because they had financial difficulties. We We helped him where we could. We also got him boots although he ended up getting a contract with Nike.

"His family did the rest with regards to transport above all when he started in the academy. His parents got him everything, they are so important in his career."

AdvertisementWas documented as a left-back

When he initially joined the Flamengo school, the club document described him as a left-back.

However, that was a mistake on the club's part as he demonstrated his skills while playing as an attacker.

Started out with futsal

From 2007 to 2010, Vini took futsal lessons at the Flamengo School of São Gonçalo, located in Canto do Rio, a famous club in the center of Niterói.

In 2009, at the age of nine, he took part in futsal trials at Flamengo.

The club saw potential in him, but in view of his youth he was asked to come back the following year. However, he decided he wanted to play football instead of futsal and did not return.

Arsenal can't, so can anyone stop Man City from winning the treble now? Winners and losers as Kevin De Bruyne turns on the style to sink sorry Gunners

Pep Guardiola delivered a tactical masterclass as the defending Premier League champions ran out 4-1 winners over their nearest rivals

That's that then. The Premier League title race has been one of the best in recent memory, but surely it's over now after Manchester City's mauling of Arsenal on Wednesday?

Pep Guardiola's side ran out 4-1 winners over the Gunners, as Kevin De Bruyne led the way with two goals amid an impressive attacking performance from the Belgian playmaker.

John Stones and Erling Haaland also got on the scoresheet with goals at the end of each half, with Rob Holding's late strike only a consolation for Mikel Arteta's outmatched side.

Arsenal actually remain top of the table with a two-point lead, but having dropped nine points in their last four matches and with City still having two games in hand on them, it seems inevitable that the Gunners will now come up short.

🏆 TOP STORY: Haaland breaks Salah's goal record📣 HAVE YOUR SAY: Is Lukaku the answer to Chelsea's scoring woes?🚨 MUST READ: Arsenal couldn't, so can anyone stop Man City?

City, meanwhile, are now well and truly on the treble hunt. The Premier League is almost in the bag, they are in the FA Cup final and are two games against Real Madrid away from the Champions League showpiece. Can anyone stop them in this kind of form?

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Etihad Stadium…

Getty ImagesWINNER: Kevin De Bruyne & Erling Haaland's partnership

Usually, De Bruyne is the one administering Haaland’s goal feasts, but here their roles were reversed, and it was the Norwegian who was fuelling City’s goalscoring.

Haaland kept dropping deeper into midfield, winning a host of battles with Arsenal players, and every time he got hold of the ball, rather than heading for goal, he looked for De Bruyne.

Take nothing away from the Belgian, though, who stormed through the middle and produced an exquisite finish into the bottom corner for the opening goal.

Haaland was strangely profligate in front of goal for much of the night and it fell upon De Bruyne to put the game well and truly out of Arsenal’s reach with another finish which oozed class, sliding the ball through the legs of Rob Holding and into the bottom corner.

But guess who had provided the pass? It was Haaland again, taking advantage of a loose pass from his compatriot Martin Odegaard.

It would not have been right for such a symbolic game to end without Haaland scoring, and he duly delivered deep in added time to beat Mohamed Salah’s record of 32 goals in a 38-game Premier League season.

AdvertisementLOSER: Thomas Partey

You need your big players to step up in big games and there are few players at Arsenal bigger than Thomas Partey when it comes to their importance to the team.

This was always going to be a match where the Gunners needed Partey to try and stamp his authority on the game to bring some control to the midfield.

But the Ghana international struggled throughout. He simply couldn’t deal with De Bruyne, who was drifting into areas behind Partey and constantly pulling the strings for the home side.

The way the City skipper eased past Partey in the build-up to the first goal was really poor from an Arsenal point of view.

Yes, Rob Holding could maybe have dealt with the high ball better before Haaland played it to De Bruyne. But Partey seemed to be running in second gear as the Belgium international just waltzed past him and into the space between the centre-backs.

That passage of play summed up Partey’s night really. He just couldn’t get close to De Bruyne and City’s captain dominated the game as a result.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Pep Guardiola

Against the best team in the league aside from his own, Guardiola's side produced their best performance of the season.

City dominated every aspect of the game. In certain spells they sent Arsenal into a spin with their impeccable short passing game, moving the ball across the turf at lightning pace and not allowing their opponents near it. Moments later they were playing long punts down field and Haaland was monstering Granit Xhaka or Odegaard.

Jack Grealish was winning every physical duel while Haaland was intercepting and playing delightful outballs. It was a complete performance and Guardiola is responsible for it.

The coach crafted the perfect game plan while juggling two other competitions and after losing Nathan Ake to injury.

The master beats the student once again.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Rob Holding

This was always going to be a very difficult night for Holding. It was obvious that City were going to target him and that Haaland would look to get himself one-on-one against him as much as possible.

The question was how was Holding going to be able to deal with that. It didn’t take long for the answer to become clear.

Arsenal’s centre-back just couldn’t cope. He tried to play on the front foot and press high, but City just played the ball around him and then raced into the space that he had vacated.

To be fair to Holding, there are very few defenders that could live with Haaland in this type of mood. and it must be remembered that William Saliba was given a torrid time by the City striker in the game at the Emirates.

But there’s no doubt Saliba’s injury and Holding’s inclusion in the side has had a huge impact on Arsenal’s season. It is not a coincidence that results have nosedived as a result.

To Holding’s credit, he did take his goal very well late on, but that can’t and won’t mask his obvious deficiencies.

Gio Reyna and Folarin Balogun put the world on notice! Winners and losers as young USMNT stars lead the way to Nations League final win over Canada

GOAL breaks down the winners and losers from Sunday's CONCACAF Nations League final

What we just saw was just 180 minutes of near-perfect soccer. Facing their two biggest regional rivals, the U.S. men's national team was completely dominant. Five goals scored, zero goals conceded and, at the end of it all, a second consecutive Nations League trophy.

What makes that trophy even sweeter is just how easy it was to lift it. The USMNT was never really challenged. First was their 3-0 battering of Mexico in the semifinal, which was followed up by Sunday's 2-0 triumph over Canada. Throughout this process, there was no doubt about how this would end; it felt like a matter of time.

On Sunday, the U.S. was led by two of the team's youngest stars, one familiar and one new. Gio Reyna, starting centrally once again, was fantastic, providing both assists in the win. Folarin Balogun, meanwhile, found the back of the net with a thunderous finish, getting off the mark in just his second game.

A picture-perfect goal to headline a picture-perfect performance. The USMNT has lifted another trophy and, based on their performance, there may not be an end in sight.

GOAL breaks down the winners and losers from the USMNT's win over Canada:

GettyWINNER: Gio Reyna

It's a shame that Gio Reyna's night only lasted 45 minutes because it's fun to imagine just how much damage he could have done with another 45.

Reyna was absolutely stellar in the first half, providing the two assists for the two USMNT goals. The first came via the set piece, as Reyna's corner found the head of Chris Richards. The second was a perfectly-weighted through ball to Balogun, who did the rest of the work with a thunderous finish.

The first one, in particular, will be something of a relief to USMNT fans, who have spent the last few years dying for good set pieces. Christian Pulisic has always left a lot to be desired in that category; could Reyna be the answer?

Either way, this was a fantastic performance from Reyna, who has looked significantly more confident this window. This game, in particular, was Reyna at his best. His ability on the ball is basically unmatched in the pool and, when he gets going, the USMNT attack is tough to stop.

Let's hope Gregg Berhalter was watching.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: Canada

After really frustrating the USMNT in World Cup qualifiers, this was Canada's chance to really make a statement. Their World Cup didn't go to plan, of course, but this was a chance to show that their team is just as good as any in the CONCACAF reason.

Instead, they were totally handled by the USMNT, who showed there is still a pretty large gap between the two despite the qualifying results.

Canada have some talented players and may very well be the second-best team in the region, but they were also the second-best team in the region. There was no facet of the game where Canada was as good as the USMNT; they were never really in the game.

After the match, head coach John Herdman took aim at the federation for their lack of investment in the program compared to that of U.S. Soccer.

"We need to get the money," he said. "We have to get serious about winning a World Cup. Anytime you host a World Cup you have a chance to win it. You see it on the field, the margins are so thin. These players, this country deserves it."

Canada are still much better off than they were five years ago; they're probably better than they've ever been and getting better. But Herdman expects more than what he saw this week, and he probably has a point.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Folarin Balogun

He's off the mark now with what may just be the first of many. If this is the striker the USMNT will be getting going forward, oh boy.

Balogun lived up to his billing with his goal on Sunday night, combining perfectly with Reyna before smashing the ball into the back of the net. It was as pure of a sequence as you can get as Balogun created space, ran into that space and then provided the finish. You can't ask much more of a striker.

His performance against Mexico was good, but quiet. He did the little things very, very well, even if he wasn't involved in any of the goals. On Sunday, though, he did the big thing: putting the ball into the back of the net.

By doing so, he became just the second USMNT player to score his first goal in a final, following someone else soon to appear on this list. And, just two games into his international career, Balogun already has his hands on an international trophy.

His decision to commit looks good, at least so far, and the USMNT are lucky to have a player that does, indeed, look like he should be a legitimate star for years to come.

GettyLOSER: Alphonso Davies

This comes with a caveat. Based on what was going on around him, there was little Davies could have done to salvage this game. Canada were outclassed, and even their superstar couldn't save them.

He tried his hardest and, at times, he tried too hard. In a game where Canada were totally frustrated, Davies resorted to hero ball a bit too often to his team's detriment.

Without two key midfielders and one starting defender, the USMNT faced a tough test. Davies is arguably the best player in the region, someone that can change a gam singlehandedly due to his pace. To counteract that, the U.S. needed a gameplan, and B.J. Callaghan nailed it.

Joe Scally, a player that is familiar with Davies from the Bundesliga, slotted in at right back and was strong. Brenden Aaronson, a pressing monster, was put into central midfield specifically to bother Davies. That duo totally strangled the Canadian star, leaving him ineffective throughout the first half.

By the second, the U.S. was in control and Davies was trying too hard. It wasn't his day,and it certainly wasn't Canada's either.

'If Mason Greenwood stays, I'm done': Inside Man Utd fans' Old Trafford protest as angry supporters threaten to walk away if club reintegrate disgraced striker

GOAL spoke to frustrated female fans outside Old Trafford as they demonstrated against the club potentially bringing the player back into their squad

It's opening night at Old Trafford and, ahead of the first game of Manchester United's Premier League season against Wolves, a large number of people are gathered outside, protesting against the Glazers. Referencing the ongoing sale process, the fans call for the American family to "sell United and f**k off home".

Another protest has been called, however, on an issue fans have previously been less vocal about: the future of Mason Greenwood. The club were supposed to have announced their decision on what to do with the suspended striker before the start of the season. But, rather like with the takeover, there has been no update.

GettyThe world is waiting

Greenwood has been suspended by United since January 2022, when he was arrested in relation to audio and images released on social media of an alleged sexual attack. In October 2022 the striker was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Greenwood denied all the charges.

All charges against him were subsequently dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service. A statement said "a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction". That same day, United announced they would launch their own investigation into Greenwood.

Six months on and the world is waiting to see what the outcome of that investigation is. The club has been consulting with stakeholders including sponsors, the supporters board and the women's team. The latest delay to announcing the decision was so the club could consult its female players who are currently at the Women's World Cup.

Many fans have boycotted the club since the Glazer family bought United in the controversial leveraged buyout in 2005. And if United decide to reintegrate Greenwood into the squad, many fans will also want to turn their back on the club they have supported all their lives.

Two of them are standing outside Old Trafford along with the anti-Glazer protesters. Their sign is smaller than the banners around them but it sticks out, above all for the messaging. It reads: "Don't leave the decision up to the women's team, you spineless, motherless c***s."

The two women are not related to Female Fans Against Greenwood, the Twitter account which released a powerful statement last week urging the club not to reintegrate Greenwood into the squad and called for the protest. But they felt they had to raise their voices.

"It should have been closed out a lot earlier than it has been. There's a process to go through but they need to move faster," one of the women tells GOAL, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

"When something's really important, as we saw through Covid, you can get it through bloody quickly. Organisations have no excuse not to close out things this important faster than they are. It's obviously tied up with the sale and I get that. But it's not good enough, not fast enough. I expect leadership from my club."

Getty ImagesThe audio will always be out there

Greenwood is not the first footballer to have been accused of sexual assault or violence against women. Many of those players have managed to continue their careers after charges against them were dropped. There are some United fans, who are also vocal on social media, who think Greenwood should be allowed to resume his career with because there is no longer a legal case against him.

That argument does not wash with the women standing outside Old Trafford. And the key difference is that in the case of Greenwood, the public have heard the audio and seen the images which led to his initial arrest in January 2022. Anyone with access to Google can listen to the audio and see the images and make their own conclusions.

If Greenwood is allowed to continue his career with United, the audio will always be out there and accessible, even when he eventually retires.

Getty 'Players should be accountable'

"I can confirm I was very angry about those cases as well, but I think this one has really cut deep," says one of the women.

"No one can say the 'you weren't there' argument, you know, 'how do you know it's true?' We've all seen and heard what we've seen and heard. If we can't deal with a case as cut and dry as this, what hope have we got?

"This case is an opportunity to blow open this issue to get greater visibility and accountability. Players should be accountable. They're rich, young men who think they're untouchable. They aren't and they shouldn't be."
