Derbyshire edge a fluctuating day

He came in with Glamorgan in trouble after electing to bat first on a pitch that had enough in it to keep the seamers interested.Jones struck a big blow with the ninth ball of the day when Australian openerMark Cosgrove was lbw playing forward with only six on the board. Mike Powell also went cheaply after he failed to control a pull shot and Tom Lungley took a well-judged diving catch on the run at long leg. When Jones conjured up a good one to have Gareth Rees caught behind, Glamorganwere 43 for 3 and there was another big wicket for Derbyshire on the strokeof lunch. Jamie Dalrymple had been a big thorn in their side last season, scoringcenturies in both County Championship matches and two fifties in one-day games,so the home side were relieved when he departed in the penultimate over of themorning. The Glamorgan skipper looked set on 21 but he reached for a ball from GregSmith outside off stump and edged to first slip. That left the visitors in trouble on 80 for 4 but that was Derbyshire’s last success for 25 overs as Wright and Allenby added 73.Allenby came down the pitch to lift Robin Peterson over long off for six tobring up the fifty stand and Wright reached his second half-century of theseason when he cut the South African spinner for his eighth four.He survived a sharp chance to short leg on 51 but nine runs later, he went backto a quicker one from Peterson and edged the ball into his stumps. Allenby and Wallace took their side to a batting point before Allenby appeared unlucky to be given out lbw for 57 when he was hit high up on the pad by Peterson in the last over before tea.Wallace made sure Glamorgan banked a second point by completing his secondfifty in consecutive matches before he was caught behind aiming a loose shot atLungley’s first ball back.Jones took the last wicket to finish with 4 for 60 which left Derbyshirewith four overs to negotiate, and they sent in a nightwatchman in Lungley whodid his job to deny Glamorgan’s bowlers any success.

Sunderland eye Man City ace Patrick Roberts

Many Sunderland fans have been buzzing over some transfer news which has emerged regarding Patrick Roberts.

As per Football Insider, the Wearsiders have agreed to sign the Manchester City winger and are putting the ‘finishing touches’ on a deal.

A source from the northeast club informed the news outlet that Roberts has told Troyes that he is cancelling his current loan there in order to move to the Black Cats.

He was at the Stadium of Light to watch Lee Johnson’s team win 5-0 against Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday and only has six months left on his contract at Manchester City. Therefore, Sunderland can get a player on the cheap who has won numerous trophies and has experience of playing at the highest level in the Premier League.

At 24 years of age, he still has promise for a player who was nicknamed ‘Mini Messi’ in the youth ranks at Fulham, and he could seriously help the Wearsiders’ promotion charge.

Everton transfer news on Tosun

Many Everton fans have been left reacting to some transfer news that has emerged on Cenk Tosun.

As per Sabah, the striker has now reached an agreement with Besiktas to return to them for the third time in the January transfer window, and there are talks between both clubs.

The Turkish side would like a six-month loan deal, and it is now up to the Goodison Park faithful over whether they accept it.

Of course, a permanent deal would be more ideal, given that it has not really worked out for Tosun on Merseyside, with just 11 goals in 59 games in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt).

However, getting even some of his £60,000-per-week wages off of their books would benefit Rafa Benitez’s team, and so it is no surprise to see so many Toffees supporters just wanting him gone.

Collingwood confident of resurgent England

There will be no rousing speech or chest-thumping patriotism from Paul Collingwood when England take the field for their semi-final against Sri Lanka because he doesn’t think his team needs it

Andrew McGlashan in St Lucia12-May-2010There will be no rousing speech or chest-thumping patriotism from Paul Collingwood when England take the field for their semi-final against Sri Lanka because he doesn’t think his team needs it. The prospect of securing a place in their first major final since 2004 is motivation enough.”The guys are ready; they are excited,” he said. “If there was a feeling around the camp that the guys are nervous or anything like that then maybe something would have to be said. But the guys are so focused in the jobs they’ve got to do, roles they’ve got to play. We’ll have a team meeting tonight, but let me tell you I’m not going to come out with any rip-roaring speech.”England have been the surprise package at this tournament (Australia were always going to get the hang of Twenty20 eventually) and there has been a supreme confidence about their play since a nerve-wracking evening in Guyana when they feared a short run chase would give Ireland a chance of piping them. That would have been a cruel exit and since then they have shown how far they have developed as a Twenty20 unit. From the power-packed top order led by the selfless styles of Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter to the in-form middle order of Kevin Pietersen (who is due back in the Carribbean on Wednesday afternoon after being at the birth of his first child) and Eoin Morgan right down to the allrounders in Luke Wright and Tim Bresnan who have contributed important innings England have their batting bases covered. With the ball the seamers have held their own while the spin duo of Graeme Swann and Michael Yardy have excelled. In the field they have been as sharp as anyone, barring perhaps the Australians.Pietersen raring to go

Paul Collingwood is confident Kevin Pietersen can shake off the effects of an 8000-mile round trip back home to attend the birth of his child and be a major force in the semi-final against Sri Lanka. The biggest concern over his return to the Caribbean was the ash cloud that continues to linger over the Atlantic.
Pietersen left Barbados after England beat South Africa and missed the final Super Eight match against New Zealand and arrives back on Wednesday afternoon. He will slot back into the team at No. 3 with Ravi Bopara making way.
“Thankfully the ashes [from the volcano] stayed away, he is due in this afternoon so I am sure he’ll be a happy man and raring to go,” Collingwood said. “I don’t think with it being five hours ahead it should be an issue with tiredness and fatigue or anything like that, he’ll be a very happy man and as soon as he touches down, until then there will be doubts around, but he’s pretty much 100 percent playing tomorrow.”

They have also shown an adaptability and quickness-of-thinking that hasn’t always been an attribute of England’s one-day cricket. When the batting suffered mini wobbles against West Indies and New Zealand there was calm consolidation before the accelerator was pushed again – on both occasions by Morgan. With the ball there has been no one-dimensional game plan and the only aspect we have yet to see is how flexible the batting line-up can be and how the bowlers react of a sustained onslaught.”This is certainly the most powerful England side that I’ve played in, definitely,” Collingwood said. “When you look at all the guys going down to probably number ten, everyone can hit sixes, so also what the guys are doing with the ball, a lot of credit has to go to them as well because they are thinking for themselves a lot.”Whereas maybe in the past they were always kind of guided by the captains or whatever but they really are going out there and thinking for themselves and thinking what the oppositions strengths and weaknesses are and adjusting the fields accordingly, that’s been one of the crucial things in our development.”Collingwood has admitted he feared for England’s future in the tournament as Duckworth-Lewis played a major part in Guyana and all he wanted was a chance for his team to show their full potential.”It hasn’t surprised me at all, but we’ve got to take all that talent we’ve got on the team sheet out into the middle,” he said. “Thankfully, we’ve done that [so far]. There were times against Ireland, where we were close to going out of the tournament.”You were thinking ‘all this potential we’ve got, and we were nearly going out’. We had that little bit of an early scare, which wasn’t probably a bad thing – because it kickstarted us into something special.”This is England’s second semi-final in a row after they reached the same stage at the Champions Trophy in September. On that occasion they were hammered by nine wickets against Australia, but there is now a far more confident air about the side.”I think the belief is the key thing,” Collingwood said. “We have done a few different things in training, there have been a couple of different selections that have proved crucial as well and overall that has given the side a lot of belief in areas that we were probably a little bit weaker. Once you see these guys on the team sheet its kind of, oh, we can take the opposition on now.”

Any World Cup loss is huge and it stings – Gambhir

India opening batsman, Gautam Gambhir, has expressed his disappointment at the team’s poor performance in the World Twenty20, saying “any World Cup loss is huge and it stings”

Cricinfo staff01-Jun-2010India opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has expressed his disappointment at the team’s poor performance in the World Twenty20, saying “any World Cup loss is huge and it stings.” He disagreed with the notion that the IPL had affected the players’ form.”Just because we don’t show our emotions does not mean we are not affected by the loss. It is misleading to think IPL played any part,” Gambhir told . “We got about 10 days after the finals, which is good enough to recharge.” He went on to say the IPL parties were not the problem either and that the IPL is one of the best things to happen to Indian cricket. He also defended MS Dhoni’s captaincy, arguing that the man who plotted Kieron Pollard’s dismissal in the IPL final could not have turned into a bad captain over the course of a few weeks. “The fact that Dhoni could think in that pressure situation was commendable and at that time he was called ‘Captain Cool’ and what not,” Gambhir said. “How can he become redundant within a fortnight?”On the subject of the criticism the team received after failing to win a single game in the Super 8 stage, Gambhir said one bad tournament should not overshadow the fact that India is the top team in Tests and the No. 2 in ODIs. He reminded fans that India won the first World Twenty20, an ODI tournament in Australia for the first time (CB Series in 2007) since the 1985 Benson & Hedges World Championship, won a Test series in New Zealand after almost 40 years, beat England at home 5-0, and came back from behind to win a Test series against South Africa.”He was also dismissive of the suggestion that the batsmen could not handle pace and bounce, saying, “If that was the case, how do you think we won in Durban (2007 T20 World Cup), at Melbourne or in New Zealand?” However, he did admit that “in this format you have to attack at all times. When you are chasing 190-odd like we did against Australia you can’t be ducking or swaying to bouncers.”

NUFC: Magpies closing in on Ekitike

A major update has emerged on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Reims centre-forward Hugo Ekitike…

What’s the talk?

90min reporter Graeme Bailey has claimed that the Magpies are closing in on the signing of the attacker and compared him to a PSG star.

He Tweeted: “Can reveal that Newcastle United are in advanced talks to sign Reims’ Hugo Ekitike for £30m. Outstanding talent – huge signing for Newcastle if they get it done, many in France believe he could be the next Mbappe.”

Huge coup

The Magpies could land a “huge” coup by signing Ekitike from Reims this month as he is a talented player with immense potential. Being touted as the “next Mbappe” is some compliment given what his fellow countryman has already achieved at such a young age.

Mbappe has won the World Cup with France and scored 150 goals in 197 matches for PSG, whilst also providing 76 assists for the French giants. He is also valued by Transfermarkt at a whopping £144m, having reportedly been signed from Monaco for £165.7m in 2017.

Ekitike has scored eight goals and provided two assists in just ten Ligue 1 starts for Reims this season in his first full year at senior level. Mbappe’s first season of starting more than five league matches in his career ended with 15 goals and eight assists in 17 starts for PSG, with the Reims man on course for 16 goals and four assists in 20 starts if he matches his form from the first half of campaign.

If the 19-year-old can go on to achieve even half of what Mbappe has managed in his career then he could be a sizeable coup for the Magpies and improve their team in the short and long-term. He has already shown that he can score goals in a top-five league, which suggests that he could make an impact in the Premier League this season. Furthermore, he holds the potential to massively increase his value further down the line.

Therefore, this could be a fantastic piece of business by the club, one that shows they are not only looking at stop gaps and short-term solutions to problems. They are seemingly looking to build Eddie Howe a team for the future as well as the present and Etitike, on paper at least, appears to be a great first step to doing that.

Tottenham: Alasdair Gold drops ‘positive’ Hugo Lloris update

Tottenham are expected to finalise a new contract for Hugo Lloris very soon, according to reliable reporter Alasdair Gold.

The Lowdown: Two weeks in…

Spurs are yet to make any significant progress during the January transfer window, with no major incomings or departures to report on.

There have been plenty of rumours, though, with the likes of Jordan Pickford, Sam Johnstone and Dean Henderson all linked with a move to north London.

That’s because Lloris is currently set to be out of contract at the end of June, however, it seems as if he is about to extend his stay beyond the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Gold’s claim

Gold shared a link to a story on Twitter on Thursday morning, highlighting a ‘positive update’ when it comes to Lloris’ contract.

Within his report, he stated that talks have finally begun between Spurs and the 35-year-old. The Frenchman’s demands are ‘modest’ and new terms are set to be agreed ‘very soon’.

The Verdict: Good news

Antonio Conte reportedly has his reservations when it comes to loanee Pierluigi Gollini, so should they not exercise their option-to-buy clause for the Italian in the summer, then keeping hold of Lloris appears crucial.

Lloris may end up being the club’s only senior shot-stopper ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, so Spurs may need to dip into the goalkeeping market anyway.

However, if Lloris extends his stay, as appears likely according to Gold, at least Fabio Paratici won’t need to sign two over the summer, and any new signing could arrive without the pressure of being immediate number one.

Steyn, Gayle play down mid-pitch hostilities

Man-of-the-series Dale Steyn and West Indies captain Chris Gayle played down the mid-pitch hostilities that threatened to go out of hand during the course of the third Test between West Indies and South Africa

Cricinfo staff30-Jun-2010Man of the Series Dale Steyn and West Indies captain Chris Gayle played down the mid-pitch hostilities that threatened to go out of hand during the course of the third Test between West Indies and South Africa. South Africa won the Test and with it the series 2-0, but the cricketing action took a back seat as two ugly incidents marred the proceedings on the third and fourth days in Barbados.Steyn was at the centre of the first flare-up, as he appeared to spit in the direction of Sulieman Benn who got close to and laughed at Steyn when he was dismissed. The second run-in involved Kemar Roach who repeatedly went up to Jacques Kallis after hitting him with a bouncer and exchanged words. The stand-off threatened to escalate and required the intervention of the umpires and West Indies fielders to come under control. So far, match referee Jeff Crowe has not come out with punishments for the players involved.Steyn attributed the tension to the high stakes involved for both teams at the end of a long tour. “Everybody seemed to swell up in the heat of the moment,” Steyn told AFP. “We have been away from home for a long time, five months, and this was the last game. West Indies knew that they needed to win the game to level the series, and we knew we needed to win this game to win the series, so things are going to happen. That’s just part of the game.”Gayle abstained from passing judgment on the incidents and said it was for the referee to handle. “If anything needs to be dealt with I am sure the match referee and the on-field umpires will actually take that into play,” Gayle said.”The spirit and sportsmanship was good leading up to this match. It’s just unfortunate in the end, where we had a bit of a boil up. It is cricket and you have to be hostile sometimes. If you can give it out, then you should take it. That’s how I look at it,” he said.

LFC fans fume at possible postponement

A number of Liverpool supporters were fuming after it was claimed that the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg clash away to Arsenal could be postponed again.

The Reds got back to winning ways last weekend, seeing off Brentford 3-0 at Anfield after a dominant  performance. That followed the drab 0-0 draw at home to the Gunners in the first leg of their Carabao Cup tie, in which Jurgen Klopp’s failed to break down 10 men for much of the game.

The return fixture is set to take place on Thursday night, having initially been meant to take place on 6 January only to be postponed on Liverpool’s request due to a virus outbreak in the Reds’ ranks. However, according to i News [via journalist Evan Bartlett on Twitter], the match could again be called off because of Arsenal’s shortage of available players.

It is an update which is sure to cause plenty of frustration if the match is postponed a second time, with Liverpool’s plans once again potentially taking a hit.

Experienced India favoured in opener

Both sides are missing key players but India will start as favourites, particularly given the amount of experience the team has of the conditions in Dambulla

Siddarth Ravindran in Dambulla09-Aug-2010Match FactsTuesday, August 10, 2010
Start time 1430 (0900 GMT)Big PictureFor a series with such an unhurried schedule, the rush to start within three days of the Tests is puzzling. India have had so little time to prepare that they decided to take an army chopper to Dambulla to save time on the five-hour road journey from Colombo. On Monday afternoon, the Indian team had their only practice session ahead of the one-dayers. They had a three-hour net in the middle, observed by the groundstaff going through their last-day preparations such as getting the advertising hoardings in place and the security personnel going through their drills.
In contrast to the packed schedule of Dhoni’s team, New Zealand are coming off a lengthy break and have had two sets of practice games, first in Darwin against Indian state side Maharashtra and then against a couple of teams made up of Sri Lankan fringe players. Both sides are missing key players but India will start as favourites, particularly given the amount of experience the team has of the conditions in Dambulla. One thing to New Zealand’s advantage side is that unlike most subcontinental pitches, Dambulla will favour their pace-heavy attack.Traditionally, the track is far tougher to bat on under lights than in the afternoon session, due to which the toss assumes plenty of importance.Form guide(most recent first)
India: WLWWL
New Zealand: WLLLWWatch out for…Suresh Raina is coming off a fantastic start to his Test career, and seems to have established himself as the best of the young Indian batsmen battling for middle-order berths. He didn’t have the best of times during the Asia Cup, and will want to make amends this time round.
In the absence of Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor’s batting form becomes crucial to New Zealand’s chances. For a man with little captaincy experience, Taylor also has the added challenge of leading the side.Team newsAn ankle injury has ruled Ishant Sharma out of the first game which means Abhimanyu Mithun is in line to add to his solitary one-day cap. Dhoni had struggled with a finger problem during the third Test but he said that he expected to play despite being in a bit of pain.
Dinesh Karthik was Man of the Match in the Asia Cup final after making a half-century at the top of the order, but India also have the option of going in with Virat Kohli, who began his India career as an opener during a series in Sri Lanka two years ago.India (probable): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Dinesh Karthik/Virat Kohli, 3 Rohit Sharma, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Praveen Kumar, 9 Abhimanyu Mithun, 10 Pragyan Ojha, 11 Ashish NehraKane Williamson, the Northern Districts batsman who turned 20 on Sunday, gets the belated gift of a one-day debut on Tuesday. Andy McKay had impressed Daniel Vettori with his pace in a handful of international appearances but he may not get a chance given the presence of Daryl Tuffey, Kyle Mills, Tim Southee and several medium-pace bowling allrounders.New Zealand (probable): 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Peter Ingram, 3 Ross Taylor (capt), 4 Kane Williamson, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Grant Elliott, 7 Gareth Hopkins (wk), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Daryl Tuffey, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Tim Southee/Andy McKayPitch and conditions No cricket has been played at the Dambulla stadium since the Asia Cup which means there will be plenty of juice in the fresh, greenish track on Tuesday. To balance that is the fact that the boundary ropes have been pulled in at least 10 metres from where there were during the Asia Cup.Quotes”It is an opportunity for them [Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum] to spend some time with their families. They will come back fresh and strong, it has turned out to be a positive thing for them and for the youngsters as well.”

“The amount of games we are playing, it is very important to switch off from cricket because 365 days in a year, you can’t be thinking only about cricket.”
